Stephen (stephenT) Especially since you have lodestones in your back that point you to magnetic north.

message 952: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments We do? Wow--that's interesting. What is that for--going home to mate, like salmon? Or migrating?

You really know a lot about a lot of different subjects! That's cool!

What is the lodestone made of?

message 953: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I saw a TV show. I'm not smart. It's like a magnet.

message 954: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I wonder why they have them? Maybe I'll check wikipedia tonight.
You are smart--nobody could write what you did about the myths and not be smart. And a lot of other stuff on here, too. :)

I've never, ever been to a drive-in movie.

I rented a perfectly delightful movie called Sherman's Way a couple weeks ago. It was in the new releases, so look for it there if you're interested.

Does anyone have a favorite nap movie? Y'know, a movie you put in just so you can fall asleep to it? I always throw in Criminal (starring John C. Reilly and Diego Luna) for some reason. I love the movie, so I just feel comfortable drifting off to it.

message 956: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Almost any Civil War themed movie and out I go.

For some reason, I pass out whenever I try to watch an entire stand up comedy concert on DVD, even if I love the comedian. Anybody. The only exception is Eddie Izzard's Glorious, which never gets old.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I almost always fall asleep when I try to listen to a commentary track on a movie I just watched. Most of the commentary tends just to be praise for the crew, which is nice, but not that interesting after the third time.

message 959: by [deleted user] (new)

The Wizard of Oz is always fun to see.

Stephen (stephenT) Good day Jackie the Librarian. Glad to see you looking owlish today. Or are we trying for Minerva?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Hi Stephen. The picture is from an outdoor performance I recently attended. I was captivated by the owls!

Me, too.

Most recently watched movie:

Three Coins in A Fountain

Up next:

Cole Porter's Can Can

I'm on a Louis Jourdan kick right now. He was a hunk and a half.

message 964: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Very good costume work, no doubt. Which is why I was wondering if it was meant to be Minerva.

message 965: by Jackie "the Librarian" (last edited Sep 22, 2009 11:56AM) (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm sure the idea of Minerva is in there, Stephen.

I love Louis Jourdan, Heidi! He is the epitome of suave.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "I love Louis Jordan, Heidi! He is the epitome of suave."

Jackie, I adore that he and his wife are both still alive (he's 90ish, I think). They've been married since 1944. The Jourdans have lived a sweet, romantic life together, and I think it's wonderful.

message 967: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Okay, you Jourdan struck lasses. Check this out.

message 968: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Stephen wrote: "Okay, you Jourdan struck lasses. Check this out."

What about it?

message 969: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) It's his profile one IMDB. He's been married since 1944. Was in French Resistance. I would think he's man of worth. Not just a pretty face.

message 970: by Heidi (last edited Sep 22, 2009 12:06PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I said he's been married since 1944 already. Yes, he's consistenly been a man of impressive character. And if not watching your own movies doesn't imply at least a bit of depth, then I don't know what would. He's always seemed incredibly self-aware, at least in his public persona he has.

message 971: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok shee-ite

message 972: by [deleted user] (new)

Jourdan is a pretty good actor. Just don't ever bring up his incredibly miscast, ultra lame performance as a villainous Afghan (!) prince in Octopussy.

message 973: by [deleted user] (new)

I believe you just did Gus, Didn't like him eating a sheeps eye?

I liked him in Octopussy, Gus (probably because I was a kid, and he wasn't THAT scary). :P

Stephen (stephenT) This is tres borderline

Leslie | 777 comments I couldn't stay awake during the last James Bond movie--I don't like those. I was watching the dvd with my daughter because she loved it, but I just couldn't keep my eyes open.
NeverLand (I think it's called)--the movie about the guy who wrote Peter Pan put me to sleep too.
Not like those aren't good movies, but I did not get into them.

message 977: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'm feeling badly for Stefano for never having been to a drive-in movie. She missed out on a big piece of Americana.

Stephen (stephenT) Lobster lady, how are you? Have you been to the sea?

message 984: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Hi Stephen,
I'm good, how are you? Where do you live, by the way? When you aren't in Madagascar, I mean? We drove by the sea the other day, and probably will again today. My daughter is getting her driving hours in so she can get her license. We live on the west coast of Florida, just north of Sarasota.
At least we don't have to worry about getting lost--not with that lodestone on my back, right?
We take this big loop along all these keys, across a bunch of bridges, past lots of shops and tourist places and lots of beautiful water and sand. It really is beautiful here. Sometimes I forget how beautiful it really is as I go back and forth from work and driving Emily around.
Today will be fun, just us driving. I'm getting spoiled being in the passenger seat. It's nice!
I hope you have a really nice weekend!
Lobster Lady Leslie

message 985: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I live in Kentucky, Bourbon, Horses, Marijuana. I shall now select some appropriate fashion for you, as you've missed all the fashion week.

Sarasota? are you really that old? I thought you had to be 80 to live there. hehehe JK

message 986: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Not quite--although I'm getting there, at 48--but a lot of the people here are pretty old! Sarasota is great, I love this whole area. I live in Bradenton, but it's one of those places where the towns just sort of merge together as they grow.
What I love about this area is there are two artist colonies, writers groups, theater, a symphony. I've lived here since 1983. And the beaches and the beautiful outdoors. What I don't like is the heat! UGH!!!

Kentucky is beautiful, I've driven through it several times. I was born in West Virginia. I haven't traveled much since ending my marriage in 2003. Do you live out in the country or in the city?

We also have a great art college here--Ringling, that's where my daughter wants to go to school. She's in an art program at her school where she does art half the day, every day.

And you're right, I have missed the fashions all week--what goes with antennea? And eyes on the ends of long, graceful stalks...hmmmm?

message 987: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I live in Bardstown, which is the capital of Bourbon country. 80% of the world's Bourbon comes from this county. About 11,000 souls in Bardstown.

message 988: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Here you go Leslie

message 989: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments WOW!!!!!

Where did you come up with that??

LOL!!! Hilarious!

That is just so funny!!!!!

Thank you!!

I just showed this to my daughter--she is cracking up and she says you're my BFFL--she talks in this new language called "texting".
I guess I have to tear myself away and go get ready and take her driving.
You made my day!! :)

message 993: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Do you like bourbon? I like bourbon chicken, that's about it. To me alcohol tastes like cough syrup. ICK!

message 994: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I'm unclean too, Stephen. I'm not a fan of showering.

message 995: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) LOL Sally. I was pulling you leg, he is a hottie. He's also a pot head. I have heard through the grocery line magazines that his bathing is a little patchy.

Leslie, do I like bourbon? It depends on the bourbon. Some bourbon is like drinking kerosene, and others, the really expensive $120 a bottle kind, is like drinking water, except with a pleasant flavor.

Cheap bourbon burns and tastes bad
Good bourbon has no burn and tastes gentle, almost sweet, and slightly of oak.

message 996: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments They age it in oak barrels, right? My old church said drinking was a sin, so I didn't drink for almost 30 years, then I left the church and I tasted alcoholic drinks, they mostly tasted like the cough syrup I used to take all the time when I was litte. LOL
Although frozen drinks are good! And Irish Creme, especially the chocolate. I'm a bit leery of it, though, just in general. Especially if I'm not at home.

Found out why we wonderful lobsters have lodestones. It's for migration, it helps the lobster go to warm waters for the winter--and I'm assuming back home, when winter is over. When I looked it up, I put Why do lobsters have lodestones and all these questions about lobsters came up, including--"Why do lobsters scream when they are boiled?" DUH!! Wouldn't we all scream if we were boiled?

Have a great day!!

message 997: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Hahahahaha, don't boil that dress though. Drinking until you are stupid falling down drunk is plain old...stupid. I like single malt Scotch Whiskey. My favorite is Lagavulin. It's only made in one place in the world. Why my favorite? The heavy smoke flavor, followed immediate by the rich tone of the oak barrel, then the taste of the peat, because the water they have is filtered through peat.

Getting drunk on that would be like taking your vegetarian bride to a honeymoon to a slaughterhouse.

message 998: by Lorna (new)

Lorna Ha, good analogy X)

I like Irish Whiskey, Jamesons is my favorite. And I'm afraid I head to the slaughterhouse more often than I should...

MOVIES....Is 'Charlie & Boots' out in America yet?? It's a brilliant Aussie movie. It actually portrays Australia the way I know and live in it.

I recently rented an indie called Explicit Ills, which starred Rosario Dawson and Paul Dano. It was acted well, but had no real story or plotline. I wasn't thrilled with it.

I also rented The Class, which is supposed to be really good. I hope it is.
