Reader/Writer Interest

Hi all,

here is a new forum where we can pose question to each other, (reading and writing related) and gain insight with our fellow members. TO start it off, I have a question for all of you

Q: What are the three books you've read that have influenced the writer you are today. Post below with explanation: (Hope this doesn't sound too much like work/school:D)

For me, I would have to say the "Harry Potter"s by J.K. Rowling, the "Percy Jackson"s by Rick Riordan, and the "Alex Rider"s by Anthony Horowitz.

Yeah I read some of the Alex Rider series. They were really good:D
The top three books that have helped me as a writer are
Wuthering Heights (classic) by Emily Bronte, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

The top three books that have influenced me would be:
The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker, the Mark of the Lion Trilogy by Francine Rivers, and The Hangman's Curse by Frank Peretti

My greatest writing inspiration, especially where the fantasy genre is concerned, is of course J.R.R. Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings; the man was an incredible author and inventor of worlds! As for my other two choices, they would have to be The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway and Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky.

Memory, I can see where you get your inspiration. I'm going to read the Mark of the Lion trilogy soon. I heard it's really good. Plus I love that whole era.
The same goes for the Lord of the Rings, I have the first book and am slowly making my way through it. Epic to be sure. I've also read the Cellist of Sarajevo. I haven't read Suite Francaise yet though I do own it. I read one of her other books Jezebel, it was different but extremely good.

The TOP three books that I've read that have influenced my writing are probably Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and (simply because I can't narrow this last one) The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. All of them because they bring common knowledge to light in a completely new way... :)

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, because I want to write about something that needs to change. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, because it inspired one of those awesome "girl power" moments and kicks that awful writer's rule "always write about what you know" right in the teeth, I really hate that rule! And finally, Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux just because it's got such a fantastic unique idea that's both beautiful and haunting at the same time. I think that's it for now. :)

I agree with you Sleeper, I hate that rule "always write about what you know." Instead I think you should write about what you're interested in...what really makes you tick. That's the only way you can be true in your fiction if it somethings that means a lot to you. Something you feel passionately for.
