(view spoiler)[The school year has been long, to say the least, and it isn’t quite halfway over yet either. Even though studying for N.E.W.T.s takes up the vast majority of his time, it and everything else is almost painfully boring. At least he’ll be home for the winter holiday, which Daniel Summers, sad to say, misses. (Of course, he’ll never admit this. Most people assume that he acts the same way at home as he did at school, which is to say impassive and uncaring).

His time at home is only slightly less boring, mainly because winter holds Christmas, and his mother insists in keeping the “tradition” of having family over on the holiday. He has never been especially close to anyone from his extended family, as they all live far from Maldon and come only during Christmas. Even more so, his cousins are either far younger than him, or far older.

Daniel leaves Platform 9 ¾ only to board another train to Essex. It’s a quiet ride, thankfully.

His parents stand on the platform waiting for him. He smiles as they come into view. An actual smile. It feels strange to him, so he lets it fade as he steps off the train. His mother wraps him in a hug.

“You haven’t been writing,” she says, holding him at arms length.

“I haven’t had time,” he answers. Which is partially true. Studying only takes up so much time in the day. “Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize, dear.” She lets go of him and takes his things. “Let’s go.”

His father places a hand on his shoulder as his mother starts for the exit.

“We should talk,” he says, but Daniel shrugs.

“Later,” he answers and he goes off to join his mother who is waiting for them by the exit.

Christmas is a mere two days away and his mother is in a frenzy with trying to finish preparations. She refuses help, however, saying that Daniel deserves his rest for working so hard and that he should relax during his holiday. He doesn’t protest, knowing that it will cause his mother strain, which won’t help her health. So he lies on his bed upstairs in his unspectacular room whose walls are painted an almost depressing shade of white.

He sighs and closes his eyes. As soon as he does, his mother calls him downstairs. Of course, he thinks, but Daniel stands and makes his way to the kitchen.

“Yeah?”

“Sorry to bother you—” You’re not. “—but can you run to the store for me? I forgot to pick up some things.”

“Sure.”

“The list is on the refrigerator.” She smiles, and he takes the sheet of paper with his mother’s small handwriting. Daniel finds himself walking on the snowy sidewalk in his winter coat, wand tucked away in his pocket (in case of an emergency). The store he has in mind isn’t too far away but in the snow, it takes a bit more time to get there. And he wants to take his time.

There are only a few other people walking, with slightly more cars than pedestrians. The streets were quiet, unlike the hiss of the kitchens at home or the buzz of the common room that wasn’t loud enough to distinguish conversations and not quiet enough to ignore.

Crunch… crunch… crunch.

Footsteps echo his, and he turns his head, hand sliding into his coat pocket where his fingers wrap around the base of his wand.

“Hello, Mr. Summers.” An elderly man stands behind him, garbed in black robes that were the staple of the wizarding world. “I must say you look quite a bit younger than what was described to me.”

“And who might you be?”

“A curious man.”

“How specific.” The man laughs. He can’t tell if he’s mocking him or if he’s simply amused. He assumes the former.

“What do you want?” Daniel questions, restraining himself from attacking.

“Ooh, someone’s impatient. I just wanted to talk,” he answers. He feigns a look of innocence that doesn’t match his previous actions.

“Get on with it, then.”

“Tsk, tsk—wait!”

Daniel has turned and is walking away from the strange wizard. Obviously whatever the old man’s there for isn’t worth his time, so he continues down the sidewalk.

“Slow down, boy. My body isn’t what it used to be.” He rolls his eyes.

“Get to the point,” he says instead. His hand still hasn’t left his pocket.

“Bloody hell,” the man huffs and he mutters something unintelligible.

“What?”

“We need your help.”

Daniel pauses his rapid footsteps, long enough for the old man to catch up, but he refuses to turn. “‘We,’” he repeats, frowning. “Who’s ‘we?’”

“Well… that’s not very important.” An unnerving smile crosses the wrinkled face.

“I beg to differ.”

“The point is, Mr. Summers, is that I and my … associates require your assistance.”

“Mine?” he scoffs, incredulous. There were plenty other wizards in the world far more talented than him. “I—”

“Mr. Summers, we do not usually seek the help of Mud—Muggle-borns,” he amends hastily. “But you have become the exception.”

Daniel looks over him briefly, eyebrows raised, as if trying to divine how idiotic this man was.

“I don’t associate with your lot.”

“My lot?”

Daniel rolls his eyes and sighs. Once more he continues on his way. His mother must be worried by now. May as well call a cab. But before he can step into the street, the old man makes a grab for his arm, squeezing it harder than for someone who “wasn’t what he used to be.”

“What?” He’s irritated now. He’s been free of the Trace for over two years now, and he isn’t afraid of using magic. Obviously whoever this was wasn’t unfamiliar with the concept.

“Listen, boy, we need you. This opportunity—”

“Which you have repeatedly failed to explain.” He rips his arm away. “I don’t do ‘favors,’ regardless of what they may be.”

The old man seems to be at a lost for words. “We’ll make you regret your decision,” he says meekly.

“I’d love to see you try.”

Daniel walks away from the man—calling a taxi when he sees one—and resumes his path to the store. (hide spoiler)]
