LouAnn (louannt) I have a 1st ed. Nook, for some reason over the weekend it just completely unregistered (i think the battery died?) when I plugged it in I had to re-register it, put in all the settings, etc. Now, all my documents are gone (ok, I have them on my computer) - but my B&N library appeared ok. However, when I try to open the books, they just go to an "overview" about the book! Says I need to "download" it - is that normal? I don't want to get charged - most of these were free books before! Even when I go to the B&N Library the books are there... but say "download". When I try, it says my card is expired. Guess I have to put in a new card, but I'm afraid I'll be charged. Is this just happening because my card is expired?

That just means that the books are available in your B&N library but not currently on your Nook. You won't be charged for downloading them. Go ahead and download them from your Nook.

For some reason, when I got my new Touch, most of my B&N books needed to be downloaded again -- I guess changing the registration has that effect.

LouAnn (louannt) Thank you!

Karendenice Yes ma'am. Un-registering my nook gave me all kinds of problems. I've had to un-register 4 times. Three of those times I had to get a replacement of my nook. And I also learned that if you happen to lose your debit/credit card or even change it for any reason you also have to un-register and re-register it.

Sharon (basketchik) | 74 comments Karendenice--- apparently this is true if you change your email address also. Last night I tried to download a book that I had preordered under my old email address and it kept telling me that my nook was not registered. It was a mess.

message 6: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I don't know if this is the case with any other ereaders but I hate it. I would think that their would be some way to fix it.

Margaret (arya_stark) | 10 comments This same thing happened to me last night. My battery was low so I plugged it in, and this morning it started downloading some new software and completely unregistered my nook in the process. It's frustrating.

Kaye (momgee) | 10 comments Yesterday I put my 5 month old Nook color to sleep (battery was at about 56%). Last night I went to turn it on and nothing .... absolutely nothing. Will not turn on at all. Of course tech support is not open on weekends! Has this happened to anyone before?

Kaye - I haven't had this happen with my Nook Color, but it has happened to me with my 1st edition Nook. I powered down completely by pressing the power button, not just putting it to sleep. Turning it off completely. Then waiting a few seconds and going back on and it was fine. I don't know if it will work with Nook Color but the first thing I ever do when I have problems is completely shut it down and go back in. Like I said, I don't know if this will work for Nook Color. I've only had mine for about a month.

I hope your problem gets solved soon!

message 10: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Just got off with customer service at the 800 number. my problem was I was putting epubs on. those I see with no problem. but first the bookshelves I have I couldn't move my books to whichever one I wanted. then it was giving me a updating problem when it came to the B&N books. it was saying some type of error check later. so last night I decided to turn the nook completely off wait a few minutes then turn it back on. then I'm seeing my epubs. but when I click to go over to my B&N books it says I have to register. well I never unregister. all the bookshelves are gone on the epubs I tried to redo them it says I have that one already. no matter how many times I tried to register it kept coming up with error c7851 which I never found out from the guy what that is. we tried doing the registering a few times different ways he had me take the battery out and everything and he had his boss do it even he said he could but the boss could. still getting the same error message. so they are sending me a new nook. I asked is it the same type. or asked will it be a redone one. I never got a full answer except it's better than I have a different full screen where I have the 2 separate ones (which I don't even think they have anymore) and I think the battery lasts longer he said and is the same size. he said it will come anytime be wed-friday. (pain not knowing exact day) I hate doing that wifi connection again everytime I've did it, it takes me forever and I hope the registering goes easier. but will all my epubs still be on or do I have to redo the sideload thing. Besides freezing a few times this is really the first problem I've had with the nook. anyone that went though getting a new one sent out to them in the past. how has it worked out for you. and does anyone know which of the nooks they send. if I look on the side I would figure it's the tablet or is it something they don't sell anymore. it sounds like from what I read her that this registering problem has happened to others. They said as soon as I get the new one to take the returning label out of the package and send my nook back. it has to be sent back asap because otherwise he said they charge you.

Michelle [Helen Geek] (michelle_reads_to_relax) | 2 comments Donna - I have the Nook color and had the original Nook reader. I'm reading your problem and it does sound like a battery issue. Yes, I've had them send me a "replacement nook". They will send you a return package where you are to return your nook to them. Yes, they send you a nook just like the one you have. Your B&N books will download automatically, and they should already have it registered to you [maybe not, but not hard to do]. You will have to re-establish your personal shelves and any ePUB's you have from other book sellers or personal documents, pics, etc. I've had my Nooks for about 3 years now and between my daughter and I have probably experienced everything imaginable. Nook support is really good, and most of my issues have been user error. Feel free to send me a note if you need any help.
Good luck!

Donnajo thanks Jackie & Michelle, all I know is they did say it won't be the one with the 2 screens anymore it will be one big screen and he said the battery will last longer. I figured I would still have to connect to my own connection. that will probably be a pain to do again. when I orginally did it I didn't keep very good notes and I know the last time I had to connect for another thing it took me awhile and had to keep redoing it because did I put a large cap or small or whatever. mostly had to keep doing it different ways to see which worked. even after it did connect I still didn't know which way ended up working after doing so many. it's just it's so senstive typing the info in. the info they emailed said something about letting me know after it gets shipped. once that happens can I call UPS to ask when exactly it will arrive. at least which day so I know between the 3 he told me so I'm not going crazy waiting or staying at home. it's just they leave it and I really don't trust things like that staying outside.
and where exactly does it come from. the email had a NYC address and it also had one in AZ which I saw said it was the hub. I think that is where it goes back but where do they come from the same location.

Jackie, if I have problems you will probably be hearing my voice screaming. LOL

Donnajo okay here is something I realized this morning when I went on my nook to go though the books so I could finish writing down the epubs that when the time comes I can sideload back into the new nook.
realized all the books B&N and the epubs are all under documents. now that is totally weird so there is something really wrong with the nook. I didn't realize that when I was talking to customer service at the time. Even if I do something with the shelves it won't move anything. I guess maybe it could be a battery problem even though the battery is still charging. it's down half now but if I want to read anything I'll probably be charging it again.
another thing I guess when I have to send it back in the package there is no way I can take my stuff out of there because I can't delete anything.

message 14: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) Donnajo, are you saying even Nookbooks purchased from B&N are showing under Documents? Sideloaded content always shows under Documents instead of Library, but ebooks from your B&N account should be under Library.

message 15: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Yes, that is what I'm saying even the nook books that are purchased from B&N are showing under documents. it's only one category there is no library category. I guess it's good they are sending me a new one. I wonder what happened that caused something like this to happen. all I was doing was sideloading epubs I got from my mac to the nook. it all was going okay. but then it wasn't letting me take things off the shelves I added to move them to another. also I was trying to take books off the lendme shelf because I wanted to get rid of that shelf so there wasn't so many pages I had to go though each time. I figured a lend me shelf wasn't needed since it was easy enough to locate my lendme books when the time came up.

Christine US (christineus) | 18 comments I actually just found that today when "opening" a new book at lunch. It confused me b/c my books usually download automatically after purchasing them- but ultimately I just did the download and the book opened. I am glad to hear this is not a solo problem AND that it appears the help desk has experience with it, just in case it gets worse!

message 17: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo okay here is a update. I got another email today and said something about the nook simple touch that is being replaced. first it's not a nook simple touch. it's the original nook. so I ran to best buy up the highway to see exactly the size and what I would be getting. talked to the guy he laughed when I told him. here B&N is taking my $259.99 nook that I bought a $69.95 extended warranty on and giving me a nook single touch that is being sold for $99.00. now with a warranty it's equal value or a better model. the manager or supervisor at B&N said my nook has no value. well still you buy a extra warranty to cover that. she also said she could give me a nook color for $100. again I would be paying more out. my bil keeps saying it's not right. so I called the B&N that I go to and bought it at and talked to the nook manager to see what he said. he said he's going to check out what his options are and to see if he can find the same type I already have. but I'm going tomorrow and the manager that is in will see if he can fix my nook. My whole thing is I think they should replace it with a nook color or a nook tablet since they no longer have the one I bought. not a cheaper model even if it is supposed to be better. she said what I have is a e ink whatever they call it and is a ereader and the color or tablet is not in the same category. It doesn't seem right.

I don't think the original cost really factors into the equation, ereaders have come down a lot in price. The fact that the Touch is cheaper than you originally paid doesn't mean it's an inferior product -- in fact, in most respects it's far better. Are there features of your original Nook that you would really miss?

Another point -- if your Nook is so obsolete they can't find a replacement, getting service and assistance for it is going to be increasingly difficult.

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle [Helen Geek] (michelle_reads_to_relax) | 2 comments My experience with B&N. Figure out what your options are and what you can live with and work with them to make it right. They've always been decent to me. I've had my Nook Color foro 1.5 years and had the Nook you describe at year or so before that. I'm pretty satisfied and have used their support multiple times. Just be really clear about what you will accept, but be reasonable. If you want an upgrade, maybe you can negotiate a small fee for the model you want. Good luck!

Donnajo I've been very happy in my past anytime I had to call them or even go into the store with questions or problems. If anything I push the nook to anyone I know who is talking about getting a ereader. I loved my nook. mine is the wifi with 3G. I'm not even going into the money I put on cases that I wouldn't be able to use. the guy I talked to at Best buy (just went there to look and compare the simple touch and ask what he thought since the store is so close) he said you can still use the cases you have. but they are bigger. well I'm thinking of a certain one that was a special buy for me that you probably wouldn't be able to use. I guess at this stage I'll see what happens today then I guess I have to wait for the one that is coming in the mail and decide what happens after that.
Thank you for your comment.

Ah, the case issue is a good point. I hadn't thought of that. (Though my Touch works quite nicely in the envelope I bought for my 3G, luckily.)

message 22: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Well the final edition of the problem is. "It's solved" I took it to B&N and saw Jerry who recognized me from being a regular customer. (this is a mega store on a busy highway) he said he's not letting me leave until we resolved the problem. with the help of Another gentlement George. the problem is resolved and I walked out with my original nook maybe within 2 hours. they tried everything and finally ended up backing my documents up and making sure on their computer that my B&N library was still online and there wasn't any other problems with nonpayment or whatever. he said a problem not exactly like it but one with the registeration thing came up this week already with someone else. with mine after backing up my stuff on one of their computers. they put mine nook back to factory settings. and they it had to upload everything so everything took long then he put my documents back on and I tried deleting something and also doing one new shelf. but I walked out with all my stuff on my original working nook. he was pushing for mine to leave with me working because the thing with the 3G and I'm in a remote area that he said he didn't want to take a chance not having that. that was the reason I got the edition I did at the time. he said the warehouse requested all the nooks I have back only 3 weeks ago from the store. they might have not been selling them for awhile but they still had them in the store. so I'm happy. I had no problem which I expected one doing the connecting to my wifi again so now the only job is to reput all the books on the bookshelves. I guess it paid for me to go to the store and get their help because the phone didn't work out for me this time around. and I told them that in the store and they agreed that any future problems they would be very glad to help me with. they will also put my extra memory card in when I'm ready for it. I asked more questions about memory cards too while I was there and other questions. So I'm back in happy camper status.

Glad it all worked out!

message 24: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Oh so am I. I guess it was good I went to the store and didn't wait and it was good that kind of recognized me. I guess if I go in maybe in a few weeks so they see me I should again say something. I had coupons I could have used but didn't bring them with me and I still have a gift certificate from christmas that I want to buy something that is not books. I did wrong when I went over a week ago and bought stuff that I didn't take the GC and that was the day I came home and found in the mail the coupons which could have been from the day before's mail that I hadn't gone and got yet. I bought a nice thin lap desk type of thing that when I use the laptop I could use it, it has the mouse pad thing you could pull out on either side I don't have a mouse but when you want to take notes or write anything, etc it's great. it's a tiny bigger then my laptop so it's perfect.
