Ciara I loved Dobby! When I was watching the film in the cinema, some people at the front were laughing! I was so sad! And I think Severus was an exciting, misunderstood character who was in love with Lily, and when I got to know him throughout the books and films, I was really sad when he was killed!

People I know are comparing them, and I thought that maybe the people of Goodreads would know the answer!

Lily Urzula Fred and Sirius, and now Snape and Dobby? Just wondering, how do you link these charaters together? But yeah, I guess Dobby, not because I liked him more, but because he was kind of completely innocent. Not that Snape deserved to die or anything, of course not, but it's always really awful when a character who was only trying to help someone just... gets killed. And is dead. And did nothing wrong. And...
Oh look, now I'm getting all teary.

Ellie Dobby!!!

Christine Severus Snape for sure because he was almost as admirable for me as Dumbledore and I always was kind of disgusted with Dobby.

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) Marie wrote: "Severus Snape for sure because he was almost as admirable for me as Dumbledore and I always was kind of disgusted with Dobby."
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOBBY IS THE SWEETEST CREATURE EVER!!

tiffany Dobby for sure.
I can imagine him still having a role to play later on in the stories with Harry Potter's children but not Snape. It seems to me that Snape's story arc ended precisely at the right moment, which is probably why so many people love him.

Linda I think Snape's death was important to the story but Dobby, Fred, Hedwig or even Mad-eye.. why kill them? Drama I suppose but I would have been happier if she had chosen her character's a little more wisely, I mean Lupin makes sense as did Sirius' death but the Creevey brothers? that was just to much!

Kristen I'm also wondering why you decided to put these characters together in an either/or question.

I'm gonna say neither really. Don't get me wrong, I cried when both of them died, but to be honest, I found Dobby to be a bit annoying and Snape not a very likable person. They were both important characters, I just didn't particularly 'miss' them when they weren't in a given scene or anything.
But if you wanna know who's death I thought was more tragic, I'd have to say Snape.

Olivia DOBBY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m sorry for dobby. I’ve watched all the movies, and dobby was my favorite character. :(

Laura i thought dobby from the movie was creepy looking. but i loved his kind nature and pure heart. awww...poor dobby.

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) YEs!! Dobby is the one I will miss forver :(

Leah dobby

message 13: by Jenn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenn Always loved Snape, never liked Dobby.

message 14: by SfPhoenix (new)

SfPhoenix Dobby...he was so innocent.
Like and admire Snape too. But then he knew the risks and what he was getting into.

And I agree with Linda..too many characters were killed off in the 7th book.

Hazel They're not real, they're only dead by the end of the story, just reread the books and stop being overly dramatic about fictional characters. I mean really, as there won't be any more Potter books (Rowling pretty much drew a line under them with the ending to deathly hallows), so you have no opportunity to "miss" anyone.

Sabine Reed Dobby...but I wish Snape had got his due in his life, and not after death

Ellie Dobby.

But seriously, when Harry was viewing Snape's memories I was SOBBING.

message 18: by Chelsea (last edited Oct 08, 2011 05:28PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Chelsea Clifton I have to say, the way they portrayed Dobby in the movie made me harden my heart towards him a little. He stole pretty much all of Kreacher's thunder. It was like the director decided that there was only one elf that could be loved, and that was Dobby, so they couldn't really feature Winky or Kreature.

BUT.. Dobby was a pure being, and I think he would have continued to live a more positive and productive life. I think Snape's whole reason for living was gone once Harry managed to get rid of Voldemort, which was pretty much guaranteed from the moment that Voldemort assumed that Snape was the owner of the Elder wand. SO... I think Snape is better off free from this world. No more lying and pretending. He regained grace and dignity by protecting Harry, and deserves the peace of death.

Rebecca lassen dobby.... i totally burst into tears at the movie and when he died in the book!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

umm probably Severus

Why:
because, all he wanted was Lily Evans (Potter) but he never got married...never dated...all he wanted was Lily. and he never got that.
BUT Dobby did get what he wanted: freedom,Harry Potter, a sock, etc. Dobby died with something he wanted, but Severus died with nothing...

So YES I love DOBBY!! OK dont think im mean! i cried when he died, i cried a lot! But i also cried alot when Severus died, a lot. :D please don't get mad with my opinion!

~Always~
^ < severus Snape!

Isaac Dobbers all the way!

Marie Severus Snape!
He had such a complex character. He was a Slytherin but he died a Gryffindore! <3

Joanna Dobby. I cried when he died. I understood every other death, the why and the how. but for him ? No it was too hard.
I liked Snape but ... I miss Dobby much more.

Tikiri Severus, definitely.

Kenzie DOBBY!! Definitely Dobby.

Valerie Snape.

Ellie DOBBY!!! He was so...so, loyal! D':

Heather DOBBY!!!!!!!!!

Laura I loved Dobby. I cried when he died in the book, and in the movie! but I guess I also respected Snape as well, and he was always loyal to lily. i miss Snape, but i miss Dobby more.

Nurlely I do not know but I just felt terrible when Dobby died. Probably because Dobby died with a good cause and to serve Harry. But I cried watching Severus Snape met his demise. My worst crying would be when Dumbledore died.

Shravya Bhargavi snape ofcourse

Gabriel I think I'll miss Hedwig more than both of them.

Reilly both are sad.

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Mayor Cox I will miss both, but I will actually miss Snape more because I think by the end of the series he was such a well fleshed out character - so misunderstood by so many on both sides of the 'war', and a character wrestling with the dark side of himself in a very realistic way. At one stage, when we discovered Snape's love of Harry's mum (mental blank on name!!) I actually thought it was going to be revealed that Snape was Harry's father.

From a filmic perspective I just adore Alan Rickman and thought he portrayed Snape brilliantly.

Valerie Dobby!!!!!!! Rip Dobby! I miss you.

Me too! Odd as this is, she is the only character in the series I cried over when she died.
But I will miss Snape and Dobby too.

Laura oh i know right?! i was shocked! poor hedwig never did anything to or for anyone and they killed her. :(

Her name was Lily.

Abigail James Snape

Karen While these books were entertaining in their way, they are certainly not great literature. I am saddened and somewhat depressed that there is so much time and space wasted on them on a forum called "Goodreads." I guess I'm really hungry for a forum concerned with excellent writing, both in literature and nonfiction, and the Harry Potter books simply do not measure up in spite of their popularity.

I'm sorry but... I couldn't help laughing at this a little. Wow. Do you think that you're maybe taking it a bit too seriously?

People like discussing it, let them talk about what they want.

Yeah, true...poor Hedwig. :'( Love her name though.

Well, Karen, you gotta understand that people need places to vent and internet-ly cry, if that doesn't make any sense. While Goodreads is called Goodreads, I don't think people should just ignore all the books that some people think are not great literature.

Laura Ellie wrote: "Karen wrote: "While these books were entertaining in their way, they are certainly not great literature. I am saddened and somewhat depressed that there is so much time and space wasted on them on..."
Yeh, and lots of people (including me) love the Harry Potter series. We consider them as good reads.

And, I'm sorry if we made you saddened and depressed, but...perhaps you're just..over-emotional about classics?
