Lauren | 251 comments How does Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand compare to other books and films with older protagonists? Other tales set in small English towns? [Insert any other comparison here]

My Fair Lady/Pygmallion - Professor Higgins was a terrific character--one of my all time favorite movies/books. "I'm just an Ordinary Man."

Sound of Music - "Captain Von Trapp" - another all time favorite.

These are some others I thought of that in some ways fit the bill:

Anna and the King of Siam
Anastasia
Gigi
Roman Holiday
War & Peace ???
Dr. Zhivago
The Paper Chase

I know the comparison to Jane Austen is sort of over-done, but I did see a lot of similarities to, beyond the tone of the book, the small English village or town, where the slightest lapse in manners has everybody all upset. For example, Emma.

With older protagonists? Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. She's one of my favorite characters EVER.
