You can join in at any time in any challenge and can always use the books you have read since the beginning of that challenge. Unless it says differently in the rules.
This challenge started on 1 October 2011 and will end on 30 September 2012. So any book you have read in that period can count towards this challenge. So not just since January but since October. :)
It is one of 5 Year challenges. I don't know if you have seen the others, but maybe you want to join in them too.
