Suzanne Thanks so much for the excellent list, and all the work you put in! It makes me feel like I need to quit my job and spend more time reading.

message 402: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments The interesting thing about this list (to me anyway) is that I have read them all. All except for one that is. Never read Graceling by Kristin Cashore.

I have go back and refer to the previous lists for more books to put on my way to big To Read pile!

This has been the best part of this campaign by MrsJ, getting to refresh my memory of books read and to discover so many more to read!

Thanks!

message 403: by Susinok (new)

Susinok Great list! I am slowly filling in the gaps of books on here I have not read yet.

message 404: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I think I may have to create some sort of challenge for myself. There are a fair few that I have not read as yet.

Hmmm.....

message 405: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm going to try and read 10 books from the list:

The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera, #1) by Jim Butcher Good Omens by Terry Pratchett The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1) by Terry Pratchett American Gods by Neil Gaiman The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks The Belgariad, Vol. 1 Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit by David Eddings

Nice selection.

Voting was difficult. I just could not let myself vote for an unfinished series...

message 407: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I've read 42 from the list. About 10 I've either abandoned or have no intention of reading. So, I picked the 10 I'm most interested in from what's left!

carol. | 2616 comments The series concept was a barrier for me too. I can think of a number of cases where I thought 2 or 3 books in a series excellent, but then some obviously weak members in the same series.

And I LOVED The Name of the Wind, but don't know that the series will be my favorite yet. And then there's things like the Wheel of Time, which I'm only part way through, and how can you really vote for Game of Thrones without knowing the rest of the progression? lol

PS
I ADORE the Alanna series, but it's children's literature and hard to rate it in bulk against more sophisticated fantasy works and worlds.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I am impressed by (what I see as) the split in titles. There are books I love on the list and books I greatly disliked. Like others there are also books where I liked the way a series started but then didn't card for where it went. It's an eclectic list for and eclectic group.

Great book. Her book "Fire" is even better :)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments Magic Bites looks good, but that cover art is bad bad bad. I know it sounds shallow, but bad cover art can keep me from being interested in a book.

Is the solution a Kindle? A bad cover doesn't keep me from reading it... just from carrying it around ;)

Or duct tape. Hmm...shiny...

message 415: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments "Carol, why are all your books covered in duct tape?"
"I don't read porn, honest--just urban fiction."

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I find usually you can get by with taping the spine. Though I've had to re-glue pages into a paperback and even a couple of hardbacks.

The cover art put me off for soooo long. I didn't even bother to read the synopsis, I just classified it in my 'never to be read' list. But it was so popular I gave it a try and loved it!

Sara | 60 comments I'm at a loss for what book should get my final vote. I just can't bring myself to pick one.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments OWWWWW I Know, I know (waves hand over head)!!!!!!

....wait for it....

...The Deed of Paksenarrion

:-D

message 422: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Nu-uh--I know he's going to say Witch World.

Okay, so maybe that's MrsJ's choice.

message 423: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Nov 01, 2011 05:32PM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I love you Carol...but MrsJ has the obvious and true answer.... Alas too few people have read The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon . Yah, that's my answer:The Deed of Paksenarrion

:) okay, so I'm predictable.

message 424: by S (new)

S Pearlyan (purplewidow) | 84 comments I think I'm going to read it soon. And it better not disappoint me, Mike.

message 425: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Ooooh... "six hundred thousand words." I think that's too many for me--probably some of them have more than two syllables too. I try to keep my word count one sixteenth of that. ;)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Is that the Wheel of Time??????

message 427: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments That is what the description for The Deed of Paksenarrion says. Must be an omnibus :)

message 428: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Nov 02, 2011 09:23AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I went and changed editions On my review). That was one that also included two prequels WI assume that was for the vote). The Deed of Paksenarrion includes Sheepfarmer's Daughter, Divided Allegiance and Oath of Gold. That edition also includes Liar's Oath and Surrender None those two are okay but not as good as the trilogy.

Sorry I didn't look at the edition that came up. The Deed of Paksenarrion try this edition.

message 429: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Ah well, thanks for clarification. I had one on my TBR list but not the other. Now I know where to start. :)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Ok, so I totally didn't expect GRRM to edge out Harry Potter! Wow! Talk about surprised!

message 432: by Weenie (new)

Weenie

Lol and why not? JKR is good, GRRM much better! :-)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments MrsJ, is the final list with rankings up on a separate thread somewhere? Or, if it isn't, will it be? Or, will you post it here?

(Sorry, I might have missed a comment that was already posted about this. You're welcome to slap me silly if I did!)
