Why is everyone hating on Sydney?
Maddie Maddie Sep 24, 2011 03:36PM
I read the book - and loved her. Then I hear all this crap about people not liking her? Why?

Why people hate her? Simple: They find her boring.
Sydney is just the reserved, responsible character, who wouldn't understand someone's asking her out even if they wrote that in capital letters on a freaking wall.
She's dull. She's not the center of the romance in the book, and did not have much action in it.
What I have to say about this? I'm completely against it.
Sure, I understand all these points, I see where people're coming from. BUT.
When Richelle Mead first introduced Syndey to us, it was in Blood Promise, and back then she presented her as a responsible, hard-working eighteen-year-old girl who lives to try to please her father and keep her sister out of trouble.
She tries to do her work as best as she can.S
She BELONGS to the Alchemists, and consider it her one and only occupation.
She's not interested in anything else--say, romance and social life.
That's exactly how she was in Bloodlines, and I found it awesome.

When an author changes POV, he/she tends to change the character's features and personalities only to make them more interesting.
They don't care if they don't sound realistic at all, making them take such a turn-round out of the blue.
I was so happy when I read Bloodlines and understood Richelle wasn't one of them.
She KNOWS Sydney doesn't attract much attention. Guys, she's a aware of that.
Nonetheless, she keeps faith to the characters, something only a few do.
And she managed to make the storyline interesting anyway.
I personally loved Sydney.
Who cares if she didn't have romance in the first book? She's like that, you can't expect her to change.
I personally even like it more when the romance is taken slow--step by step.
I can't wait to read The Golden Lily, and I'm sure Richelle Mead won't disappoint us.

I really like Sydney, and I think I'm one of the few that prefers her POV over Rose's. A kickass heroine with a smart mouth has been overly done an I find it very unoriginal. Sydney is a breath of fresh air and her relationship with Adrian is one of the best in the VA world.
For those who read Bloodlines expecting Sydney to be as tough as Rose all I have to say is that you weren't really paying attention while reading all the VA books. Sydney was never portrayed as a kickass kind of person and if RM had changed her personality for the spin-off, I would totally lose respect for her as an author.

While I wasn't a big fan of the books, I didn't midn Sydney. She wasn't an exciting personality - but she wasn't supposed to be either. She's mired in Alchemist politics, is faced with conflicting loyalties - she's a thinker and an organiser. She's a problem solver fully aware of the long term consequences of her actions, a planner and a plotter

Is she a trifle dull? Well, yes - but given the givens, shouldn't she be?

TBH Rose annoyed me - she often did stupid things and ran off on random hunches. She rarely thought things through, she was aggressive without cause, instantly violent and generally didn't think. Sydney is a thinker

Most people hate Sydney because they want Adrian for themselves lol.

Rose was okay but I started to hate her because of how arrogant she became. I get that her personality sort of suggests that she'd be extremely confidant in her abilities but she started to act like she was the center of the universe.

I couldn't stand her when Eddie was about to kill Dimitri and she stopped him and then about a dozen innocent humans were killed because she didn't want to loose her boyfriend.

Sydney, because of her upbringing, has a lot of short comings. But the best part about a closed off character is that she can change and come into her own. I can't definately see Sydney breaking out of her shell and that's always great to read. Seeing a character change and grow stronger makes for a great book.

I'm looking forward to seeing her in the next books. I think Adrian is going to be the true hero of this series tho.

Because she's different.I think Richelle Mead needed a break from Rose-ish female characters(because as far as i could see most of her books were written from the point of view of girls with only very small differences from Rose) and tried something new,a more responsible, smart, self conscious, religious and socially awkward character like Sydney. And even though sometimes it seems a little overdone,i LOVED Sydney as a character.
It could be because i have had a thing for socially awkward characters lately(from both books and TV),but it could just be because she is simply a very unique and interesting character.
It's understandable how not everybody can like a character like her,but this doesn't mean there aren't people out there who actually manage to put themselves in her place and even enjoy it.
Anyway, whether or not there will be haters out there who want Rose back or simply dislike Sydney, there are other 5 books planned to be written about her and that says something about how good this series is,doesn't it?
In my opinion Mead could write about lawn growing and it will still be interesting. All her characters have their own charm and Sydney had her own.

Of course, Sydney is going to be different than Rose (I mean if she was the same then that would just basically make it Vampire Academy, right?) I liked Sydney's character because she was different and I also liked how she thinks... she's just getting used to the idea of hanging around Moroi's and it's understandable...
Also I think she's a way better match for Adrian than Rose ever was.
Not that I hate Rose (she's one of my favorite book character's evah!) It's just when I was reading Vampire Academy I was always TEAM DIMITRI. Rose belongs with him, while in BLOODLINES, Sydney belongs with Adrian...
So I'm not hating on her :)

She's boring.

Shes so . . . weak and judgmental. I mean yes i know you were raised to think like that but YOU ARGHHHHH. Stop it. Just stop it. And she's so annoying. Sorry for the very aggressive rant, but I just like Rose better.

i actually like sydney but to be honest jill annoyed me a bit in this book

Frankly, I was like OH_NOO! Sydney is the main character but as I started to read Bloodlines and by the time I had finished, I liked her more and I truly wanted to get to know her better in the coming books. I can't say that she is my favorite or that I like her better than Rose or Lissa, but I think she might be one of my favorites by the time the series ends. Like how Rose grew on me by the end of Last Sacrifice. :D Can't wait to see what happens with Adrian and Dimitri under the same roof in the Golden Lily!

I have loved Sydney since we first met her in Blood Promise. I found her story of alchemy intriguing and it made me want to stalk Richelle and hug her for creating her. I found nothing boring about her. I mean, the child was raised to believe a certain way, you can't fault her for that. She figured out that they wren't as bad as Alchemist believed them to be.

I adore Sydney, and love Bloodlines, and can not wait for The Golden Lily.

I really like her.

I always thought it was pointless to drag her into VA series. I didn't even expect her to show up in last sacrfrice so imagine my shock when i heard the spin-off series was going to be written from her pov. It's not that she's boring (although that might be part of it) gets on my nerves. A lot of boring characters in ya series seems to grow on me with time but not sydney. I kept reading bloodlines hoping I'll start liking her at some point but I think it was pure waste of time. Plus, how can anyone abandon Adrian? But regrettably I have to. Cuz' its not going on the right direction for me.

I loved Rose's POV but I love Sydney's too. She is the complete opposite of Rose but I find her intresting. Sure she's not the rebel most main characters are, but she fights back in her own way. Smart, composed, girl who can make your life a living h*** (with out getting caught and avoiding suspision). What's not to like?

I really love Sydney. Maybe even more than Rose. True, she is not as badass as Rose. But, I find her really cute. They are both very strong characters. The difference is that Sydney is a lot vulnerable. Sydney and Rose both take action, but Sydney does it with great planning, taking care of loose ends and collateral damage, unlike Rose who charges in like a bull, not caring about the destruction she may have caused. Rose and Sydney, both are great characters and I enjoy both. They are different yet amazing.

I actually think Rose and Sydney have a lot in common, as far as fighting for the ones they love and at least trying to do the right thing. I think a big difference that people forget to take into account with Sydney and Rose is that all of her life, Rose has had a best friend by her side, and has been surrounded by other friends. Sydney's horrible father has kept her issolated from that sort of thing so Sydney doesn't have people willing to drop everything to help her with her problems like Rose did. Up until this series, when Sydney meets Adrian, Eddie, and Jill, Rose was her first friend. I actually felt a great deal of sympathy for her. I think there is some sort of big plot twist revolving around Sydney and her father. I actually think he might not really be her father and that might be why he treats her so badly. But reguardless, I found her to be every bit as great of a heroine, because although Rose's impulsive behavior made her bolder and "sexier" than Sydney, I think that Sydney's intelligence and tolerance made her every bit as strong as Rose was. Sydney also put up a great fight when she and Adrian were captured. She didn't back down, and unlike Rose, she hasn't spent her entire life training to kill Strigoi. I think a lot of people would've given up if they had been in her shoes. I really loved how Sydney handled Adrian. She fussed at him, but didn't judge him. I thought Rose almost looked down on him. That's one thing that really made me like Sydney. She tried to assess who could get hurt before she did something too. Rose just kind of did what was for "the greater good" which was noble in its way but Sydney seemed to try to take everyone into account more.

I loved Sydney. I thought I wasnt going to because she was alchemist and what not instead of like dhampir or moroi. What I liked about Bloodlines is that it explained her character and more of an insight on the whole alchemist society. I actually liked it even though I thought ill of the whole idea of a spin off series. It was pretty damn awesome. And I am all for Sydrian<3 I don't care if the whole alchemist + moroi is like unholy or what not. I think Adrian needs some love too~

I am of the minority that prefers Sydney over Rose. I relate to her more, and she just seems all around more interesting to me. I thought Rose was great until the last two books.

I liked Sydney, i couldn't stand Rose because i found her annoying, and stupid.

I like Sydney, though I thinks it's too early to tell just yet! I wasn't sure about it in the beginning, but Sydney kinda grew on me. Probably because I never really liked Lissa or those "I'm now in Lissa's head"-moments. Also I lost all kind of respect for Rose, when she cheated on Adrian. I mean if she wants to be with Dimitri, fine, but please break up with Adrian before you start things with him!

I totally agree Sydney was better than Rose both hands down. In Vampire Academy's first book, all Rose liked was to drink, hook up, kiss guys for the fun of it and party before she got serious about Lissa. And she was jelous of her because Lissa lost her virginity first. All I think is that Rose is just a typical girl who loves to rebel. I worship her attitude and awesome ways, but she really needed to tone it down. The first thing she said to Mason was to think her naked in his own time. I mean, how disgusting and disturbing is she. I actually feel sorry that she had to grow up like that. Sydney just made the series a whole lot better

i like her. she and adrian rock.

I don't know why people are saying either "Sydney sucks, Rose was more kickass" or "Rose sucked, Sydney is boring".
What is wrong with all you people? Is it not possible to like BOTH characters? I loved Rose- she was kickass, hilarious, impulsive and selfless. She was the best female protagonist I have ever read about, because she was written in a way that I had never read before. She was fiery, and retained her passion in most every single scene, where some authors falter, depending on the situation.
I don't know how on Earth I've managed to reach a middleground (some mystical force must have descended upon me), but I loved Sydney too! She is also funny, smart and more relatable than Rose. Most people I know in real life (me included) don't charge into a situation with all guns blazing without regard for the consequences, aren't completely confident with the way they look or their own personality. Therefore I think that the way she was portrayed is easier to identify with than Rose. Honestly, is the world so clear cut and black and white? :S

Sydney is meant to have been raised in a very strict religious way. Would it not make sense to be "holier than thou" as you put it. I don't think comparing her and Rose is relevant as this is a new series. The whole point of Sydney being in this series is that she is there to watch over Jill, therefor, she's meant to be the responsible character. Sydney clearly has a good head on her shoulders and has had to grow up fast due to her life (or the life that was set out for her). I don't think she needs to be throwing punches and staking vamps to be "strong". Plus, being that this is the start of the series and we are only just getting to know Sydney properly, she has alot of room to grow through the series.
What's not to like?!!

i love Sydney she and Adrian are my fav

I love sydney and I think she will come out of her shell more as the story line goes on.

Sydney's okay.. nothing is wrong with her. But everyonr ust loves Rose's kickass POV. They just have to get use to Sydney... you know peoples just dont like changes. lol

I really like Sydney (in fact, I like her significantly more than Rose). She, Adrian, and Abe are my fave characters in all the VA books.

I love Sydney. She is such a fresh character from all others' Richelle has given us. I don't find her boring, as she is interesting in her own way.

I like Sydney a lot now that we can see from her perspective, but I do NOT like this whole possible subplot about her being all magical or something. I LOVE Richelle's writing, but really? What is she going to do, become some witch? That would totally take away from the originality and make VA like Night World or something.

I like Sydney, but I am looking forward to getting to know her better.

I love Sydney! i think if people are weirded out, then dont read it. I really liked the book from her pov and i reckon she will become even more kick ass and awesome in her own way as the books go on :)

yeah i agree with that i´m a VA fan andat first it was difficult for me to get into Sydney, cause i was waiting for Rose to pop up at any second, but once you ger pass that, Syd is a great character and i really really liked her plus the Syd Adrian combo Rocks!!!!!

I think they are hating because readers are so used to Rose's P.O.V they are wierded out about the change of perspective. I like Sydney she is different then what i originally thought in Blood Promise. Now i see why Sydney is the was she is.

To be honest, I can't stand Sydney because I found her boring and holier-than-thou. I dislike characters that are constantly judging other people and then turn around and do questionable things themselves. I wasn't a Rose fan either. I really like the books for the side characters, they need more time lol.
