A boy & girl help strange creatures build dome house using creatures large round bodies [s]

I'm trying to find the title and author of an illustrated children's book about a strange family of pear-shaped creatures that move from their cramped apartment in the city to the country where they build a dome house using their bodies as molds. The house had several dome rooms of different size based on the different sizes of the family members. I read this as a child back in the early to mid 80s. I remember a girl and boy accompanied them and helped them build the house, then they all had a party when the house was done.
