If you want free ebooks then check out Project Gutenberg. They have thousands of them - but mainly old classics out of copywrite.
I had an app on my old iphone that you could get books from and that's how I discovered PG. I have about 35 classics on my kindle.
I haven't been able to find any other free pdf books - bizarre.
I did try to convert the file but it didn't work.

For converting try Calibre. It's a free program and really useful for converting to/from almost any format. You need to turn it into a mobi file for kindle :-)
I found it a few weeks ago when I needed to convert epub to mobi. I haven't tried it on pdf files though (unless one sneaked in - it seems to like opening up to grab book files when I'm anywhere near them). Thanks Sophia.
Did you figure out how to do this? Have my Kindle arriving tomorrow and have no idea how to do it. Could you send via the usb cable? I am a dunce with technology :(
it's a different format - try downloading the app 'calibre', drag and drop file or see if opening it adds it to the calibre library then use your usb cable to send to device (kindle) and say yes to converting the format :)
I downloaded A hundred years of Solitude but it seems to be coming up in a different language :(
Later I'll see if it will go straight on my kindle and I'll let you know :D
