My roommate is swearing I loaned him a book that sounds completely unfamiliar to me. I'm asking him to recount the story to see if anybody knows what he's talking about. Thanks for your help!
The story starts with a musician on a boat. An alien alliance are looking for allies and find Earth. They have trouble determining whether or not the humans are civilized enough to join the alliance. They set up an underwater base and have a diplomat meet with the musician. The musician punches the diplomat, and the aliens find his violent reaction to be pretty odd.
Earth's government decides not to join the alliance as a people, but allows individuals to join. The aliens are okay with this because they think Earth as a whole may be too uncivilized.
Some humans end up fighting for the aliens and they do really well. The musician kept making a point that humans are trying to get past their violent tendencies, so being involved in this alien war isn't helpful to them.
At some point the musician goes to war, discovers he likes it, and that really bothers him.

Sound familiar to anybody?
Thanks heaps!
