R.E.M. calling it quits

Meh. Not that I don't like REM, but I wasn't even aware they were still together, so I can't exactly have a very strong opinion one way or the other.
I haven't really liked an album of theirs since Monster, but I appreciate their contribution before that. I'm just a little confused about why they are making such a definitive statement. Why not say 'we're taking a break to pursue other projects?'

I'm SO EFFING GLAD they are calling it quits. Now to work on erasing their catalogue from history.
I don't understand it. Sure, people liked REM. But they're not the sort of band I expected to have many really die-hard fans. They always kinda seemed like background music to me.Of course my BF is now all maudlin and playing nothing but REM. You think you know someone...
I was one of those die-hard fans. The band was the soundtrack to my life, in my early 20s.
Oddly enough, I started revisiting R.E.M. a few weeks ago, and forgot how much I loved them. Their breakup didn't leave me saddened, but it gave me the ability to appreciate what they did musically.
