Sarah | 13814 comments I haven't really liked an album of theirs since Monster, but I appreciate their contribution before that. I'm just a little confused about why they are making such a definitive statement. Why not say 'we're taking a break to pursue other projects?'

If they did that, they wouldn't get as much attention.

I'm SO EFFING GLAD they are calling it quits. Now to work on erasing their catalogue from history.

Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) I don't understand it. Sure, people liked REM. But they're not the sort of band I expected to have many really die-hard fans. They always kinda seemed like background music to me.

Of course my BF is now all maudlin and playing nothing but REM. You think you know someone...

I was one of those die-hard fans. The band was the soundtrack to my life, in my early 20s.

Oddly enough, I started revisiting R.E.M. a few weeks ago, and forgot how much I loved them. Their breakup didn't leave me saddened, but it gave me the ability to appreciate what they did musically.
