Divergent
question
Something confused me a lot, could somebody explain??!!

Hi, i loved this book, it was awesome!!!!
The part that confused me in this book is when Tris is doing the final test, there in the fear simulation, and all the faction leaders are watching how she gets over all of her fears.
when she did this the first time with Four, he told her right away that she was Divergent because she could be aware that it was only a simulation and she could change it on her will like breaking the glass and avoid drowning, etc.. And he also erased all the entries on that, so noone could figure out the truth..
So how come, she did all of this in front of all the Dauntless leaders and they didn't immediately found out she was Divergent?!??
I don't know if i'm the only one who finds this a but ironical, or maybe i just don't get the right idea in that part.

I believe that all the guys going through the test were aware that they were in a simulation for the final exam. Making them all Divergent in a sense for that one.
I don't have a copy of the book so I can't refer you to the page where it is explained. Hopefully someone else who sees your question can guide you to that.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I read that passage!
Sure, for that simulation everyone is aware that it is one.
However, part of being divergent is that you can also manipulate simulations to your own will (eg. when Tris makes a gun appear when she is hiding in the closet as zombies are trying to get to her)
So yeah, the people watching would realize that she can manipulate the simulations, which means that she's divergent.
Aaaalso I don't get why Tris and Four were so intent about keeping their relationship a sectret... In the simulation Tris kind of gives it away and later on she kisses Four publicly. Why was there ever a problem?

Well, because before Four said to keep it secret bc he said that the others would think it affected her score. Which I understood. And at the end when she kisses him, it could still affect how ppl see her scores and stuff. But she decides she doesn't care and just does it. Impulse thing.
And if you remember Four told Eric that Tris tried to kiss him (Four) and that he (Four) refused her. So I don't think it gave it away. Ppl knew she liked him, so it was logical he would be the one she saw for that fear.

everyone is aware that it is a simulation... it says this when they describe the third stage of initiation. all of them were able to know that everything they were experiencing is fake. it still gives tris an edge, because she's had experience while knowing about the simulation, but everyone else had the same power as a divergent.

I have to agree, when reading it, I kept thinking "You idiot, they are going to know you are divergent". Everyone knew they were doing simulations in Stage 2. The difference with Tris is that she was able to crack the glass, which she should not have been able to do. She avoided her fear, she did not overcome it.
Oh, and about Tris giving away her secret with 4 in her simulation... my guess is lots of the initiates have 'fantasies' or whatever about the instructors so its probably not uncommon for someone to have a fear of being liked back...or rejected...either way. I'm sure Tris wasn't the first to have that fear. They just didn't know that it was a reality for her. ;-)
Eric knew tris liked four so naturally she would see him in her fear but that didn't give anything away until they kissed after but it didn't Metternich after that cause she was already a full dauntless member and she didn't care anymore
The last stage in the test everyone knew that it was a simulation so tris looked like a normal person doing the test...nothing gave her away

They found out that she was Divergent, but the only reason Four knew before them was because he is Divergent himself.
I'm pretty sure they were told that for the final test, when everyone was watching, the serum wouldn't make them "unaware that they were in a simulation".
So, they ALL knew/realized it was a simulation and acted accordingly. Not just Tris..who Always knew she was in one...like Stephanie said.
I just finished it a few nights ago and I'm pretty sure that's right...but who knows. ;-)
oh, and the zombies comment: the dauntless that were under mind control and were killing the stiffs. Can't think of the name of Tris' old faction.

I think its because Four was a Divergent himself so he new how Divergents would act like. Maybe the Dauntless leaders didn't know she was changing the simulations and maybe thought that she just got over her fear and went to the next one. Maybe the leaders new all along and reported it to Jeanine. Thats maybe why she new. Those are the possibilities I can come up with.
