The experience helps patch the strained relationship between her and her mother. She began avoiding the present, because she enjoyed being in the past with her mother as her friend so much.

I think it had the word "time" in the title. It won a Canadian book award.

There is a scene with the mother's brothers burning and waving marshmallows on sticks, while the mother carefully toasts hers to golden brown. (I think about this every time I toast marshmallows).

Hmmm... that doesn't sound right. I distinctly remember a watch found in the attic, that when she wound it up she spent that length of time in the past (no time passed in the present).
