Fixed.

I just added an extra space, same as disambiguating an author.

So have you created a dummy author record for him?

mlady_rebecca | 591 comments Need a super-librarian to make a correction.

This quote should read "humanity has" rather than "societies have".

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

Here's is the quote on the author's website:

http://richarddawkins.net/quotes/50

We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.

Richard Dawkins

If you want to add a book reference, it was included in "The God Delusion".

Thanks!

message 357: by Banjomike (last edited May 17, 2012 02:39AM) (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments The quote in my copy of "The God Delusion" is much different:

"I have found it an amusing strategy, when asked whether I am an atheist, to point out that the questioner is also an atheist when considering Zeus, Apollo, Amon Ra, Mithras, Baal, Thor, Wotan, the Golden Calf and the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I just go one god further."

I prefer the shorter version, but the book attribution is now wrong.

That's entirely possible. I can't seem to find the quote in the book at the moment. I thought I bookmarked it. Sounds like he's used variations of the quote in various contexts.

The only reason I was asking for the quote to be changed is that I merged two variations of the quote, one with "humanity" and one with "societies". And I was attempting to find which one was more accurate.

Banjomike | 5166 comments mlady_rebecca wrote: "I can't seem to find the quote in the book at the moment. I thought I bookmarked it."

I can't give you a page number (ebook) but it is half a page before the "Noma" chapter heading.

message 360: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 591 comments That helps, thank you. Part of the orbiting teapots discussion. For some reason, I thought it was earlier in the book.

*looks again* I found it. The shorter version of the quote is on the inner cover of the edition I have. The silver version with the orange circle around God.

message 361: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments I notice that Google has over a million hits for the shortened version and 16000 for the original version.

I've just noticed that HHGTTG is not listed in the "Books cited or recommended". The fairies quote is certainly from HHGTTG. They've just arrived on Magrathea.

"As Ford gazed at the spectacle of light before them excitement burnt inside him, but only the excitement of seeing a strange new planet, it was enough for him to see it as it was. It faintly irritated him that Zaphod had to impose some ludicrous fantasy on to the scene to make it work for him. All this Magrathea nonsense seemed juvenile. Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?"

message 362: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 591 comments I was wondering if that quote was actually from Hitchhiker's Guide, or just something Douglas Adams said in passing. Guess it's time for a re-read of Hitchhiker's Guide. Better yet, where did I put the radio plays?

message 363: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments It isn't in the radio version. Just the novel.

Rachel (onlywiththeheart) | 1 comments Can a super librarian please do something about this quote? http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

It is attributed to Marilyn Monroe but she never said it. I don't believe it is known who actually said it, though.

There are actually quite a few quotes on here that are attributed to Marilyn that she never said. More info here, if anyone doesn't believe me: http://www.immortalmarilyn.com/Marija...

message 366: by Keith (last edited May 19, 2012 11:54AM) (new)

Keith (kgf0) | 377 comments On #379, I've added an "attributed" tag: with 50,000+ likes, it will surely come back if deleted, and it's never attributed to anyone else so far as I can tell, so there's nowhere to move it to. In fact, we don't know that she never said it; we only lack evidence of the original source (so far). If anyone can find evidence for another source, I'll be happy to switch it, and add a "misattributed to marilyn monroe" tag instead.

I did the same for the short version:
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

I also did a few combines, and moved this one to Clara Bow with the misattribution tag:
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

And I'll clean up what I can of the rest later.

Moloch | 3975 comments Please, I need a quick edit (accented letters) for a quote:

The correct version is as follows (copy and paste):

“La cultura dell'individuo è sempre sul farsi o non è.
L'uomo colto non è chi sa, ma chi apprende ... colto e non puramente erudito è l'uomo che sente il dovere di alimentare il proprio spirito assiduamente, quotidianamente, qualsiasi siano le circostanze in cui si trova a vivere”.

Thanks

The problem appears to be that someone merged all the Leroux books with all the Lloyd-Webber adaptations, in direct contravention of the guidelines. I'm fixing it now.

OK, 5 hours later, I believe I have all of the ALW works separated from the Leroux (and many, but not all, other adaptations as well—that needs more work, if someone feels up to sifting). The above quotes now have been properly attributed to lyricist Charles^^Hart (ALW wrote the music, not the words quoted) and to the songbook.

message 399: by Inkling (last edited Jun 28, 2012 11:45PM) (new)

Inkling | 4 comments Hello, new Goodreads user here. I was directed to this group by customer care rep Ivan Refamonte.

I found two quotes incorrectly attributed to C.S. Lewis; both quotes are actually from William Nicholson in material ABOUT C.S. Lewis. There is no source that I know of for Lewis saying or writing either of them. They are:

1) http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...
This quote is from Nicholson's play Shadowlands, Plume edition page 78: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/80...

2) http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...
This quote is from the 1993 film Shadowlands, but is not in the published play. Presumably it appears in Nicholson's screenplay, but that has never been published to my knowledge.

Is this the best place to address these issues? Thanks!

message 400: by Inkling (last edited Jun 28, 2012 11:46PM) (new)

Inkling | 4 comments It looks like Ivan adjusted both quotes and correctly attributed them to Nicholson. Neither instance indicates the work quoted, if someone here wants to follow up on that. Note that the first one appears in the published play (and the film), the second is unique to the film (it may appear in other filmed versions, I don't know).

I also found another Lewis/Nicholson quote confusion:

3) http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...
This is incorrectly attributed to Lewis and should be attributed to Nicholson. The verbiage quoted is from the 1993 film version of Shadowlands; it also appears in the play as: "“Experience is a brutal teacher, but you learn fast." (Page 96; there is no "My God, do you learn" in the published play.) I leave it to your more experienced judgement whether the distinction is relevant for Goodreads.

Thank you librarians!
