Middle English: crowned with laurel as a distinction, from Latin laureatus, adorned with laurel, from laurea, laurel wreath (crown of laurel).
First known use: circa 1529
laureate:
one honored or awarded a prize for great achievements especially in the arts or sciences

Once there was a woodcutter,
when he asked me to marry him
the woman in the grocery store said
You look like you lost your last friend.
First love!
When we broke up
it was as if the last egg in the house
got dropped on the broken floor.
This world is everywhere! The woman said,
You won’t go unsampled!
