Heather | 17 comments Just started reading The Warmth of other suns - takes place in the south and then multiple locations in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles as many of the blacks in this country migrated from 1915-1970 from the south to the north and other areas of the country. Highly recommend

I thought To the Nines was one of her best, too. My favorite, I think, is Twelve Sharp.

Issie | 12 comments Dear Diana, I loved this one too and I have such a nice remembrance of it: When starting reading it I was so riveted to the story that I missed a train, took the wrong one, travelled to a wrong town, saw a foreign christmas market, and when getting home at last half a day late finished the book.

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) Yesterday I finished Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum, #10) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich. It's the tenth novel in the Stephanie Plum series. This novel had a far more serious and darker tone than the other books. It was a gripping and exciting read with an excellent plot and great characters.

Right now, I'm a couple of chapters into The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier by Ian Serraillier. This is a re-read. I first read in when I was in school. I remember liking it but I don't remember much about the plot.

message 334: by dely (new)

dely | 368 comments I am still reading the epic of the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov.
I have read volume 1 and 2 and now I have still to read volume 3 and 4.
It is really a wonderful book and I suggest it to everybody interested in Russian history. I have read till now about WWI and the October Revolution but from the point of view of the Cossacks so it is different from the other historical books full of dates and famous names. Here we live it from the point of view of ordinary soldiers, torn away from their land in order to go to fight. Everything is so human and real and Sholokhov is a neutral observer, you can't sympathize for one side or the other, both are wrong and right and both sides kill for their ideals. Wonderful!

message 335: by Melissa (new)

message 339: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 438 comments almost done with Weeding the Flowerbeds - its been a struggle - its an interesting story, but it needs a good editor...there are content issues (one min she is doing push-ups, then doing sit-ups, then back to doing push-ups - all supposedly the same exercise) and a lot of redundancy - but an interesting look at a boarding school in Swaziland

They're making another movie of it? I liked the one with Liam Neeson and Uma Thurman from a dozen years or so ago. I read the book for the first time last year during a week at the beach. I pictured all the characters from the movie when I read it. It is one of my all time favorites.
