My last read of 2014 is Independent People by Halldór Laxness and is one of Iceland's greatest novels. It is set on a remote farm where life is hard and sheep farming is the only hope of making any sort of living. I started this book last month and put it one side as I live in England's Yorkshirs Dales, which is also sheep farming country but not nearly so hard of course. The book is excellent but I had been hoping for a novel that would transport me to somewhere very different from the place I live in, which explains my slow progress. But I am 80% through and will finish it in 2014!

message 1176: by Beth (new)

Beth (tech_grl) | 3 comments I just started reading "A Teaspoon of Earth and Sea" by Dina Nayeri. It takes place after the fall of the Shah of Iran. The main character starts as an eleven year old twin whose mother takes the other twin and moves to America. She is told that since they are twins they "will live the same life" by having the same experiences. The family are Christians, and must hide this fact, so they move to the countryside. Although she loves her quiet village, she also has to live within this new islamic regime. She loves America, and she dreams of what life must be like there for her sister.

message 1192: by [deleted user] (new)

My next book is The Orchard of Lost Souls by Nadifa Mohamed. It is set in 1988 Somalia during a time of revolution and civil war. There are three strands: a child fleeing from a refugee camp, a bed-ridden widow who has been savagely beaten by the local police and a young woman soldier.

It was an impulse buy as I haven't read anything set in Somalia nor have I visited the country.
