Go for it :) His writing is beautiful (reminds me of some of the Russian greats) and 50 pages in, I am hooked on this book.

Kathryn I am about a third in to Caliph House. I ran in to it by chance at the Library, a delightful find. This book has a charming, easy style, written with esoteric and hilarious insights on a Brit trying to adapt to life in a huge old run down mansion in Casablanca. I found out why everyone needs a turtle in their house.

Mr. Shah's father immigrated to England during the Russian wars so his children were reared in nice clean suburban London. He could not take the family to Afghanistan for holidays so resorted to trips to Africa trying to replicate for his kids his own life as a child. The result is Mr. Shah has a unique knowledge of Africa, all about. He has written 10 books and I hope to read all. Next is Searching for King Solomon's Mines set in Ethiopia, my favorite African country.

Sandra (sanlema) | 90 comments Hope you enjoy The End of Your Life Book Club. It was in my TBR list for so long, but it wasn't what I expected. Any way, it has really good reviews.

And The Mountains Echoed (last Hosseini's book) is great. It's my favorite of the three. It's a little different since it's not a long story, but a chain of stories. It so well written!

Wow! Really intense. I think a movie is expected to be released this year.

Interesting how different we all are. I think that's what makes the world go round. I read Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker a while back and besides the character development, it was the historic part I also quite liked.

Mj | 22 comments I just finished The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography by Sidney Poitier and quite enjoyed it. It was a rather reflective memoir about what makes him tick. Poitier is definitely very cerebral and conscious. I will likely read the book again again (something I rarely if ever do) because it was quite packed with gems of wisdom that I would like to ponder over more. Haven't written my GR review yet.

I am currently on page 123 of The Orenda byJoseph Boyden. I put it aside for a bit and am picking it up again. I like it and I don't like it. Not sure why. Partly because I think the language seems rather stereotyped when the natives speak English (not their first language) but the writing is excellent and there have been many very positive reviews so I plan to keep reading and finish the book. It's a 500 page book and I have found with other books e.g. Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghesethe beginning was rather slow but the more I read....the more I liked it. In fact it ended up being one of my favourite books.
