I finished reading The Gauguin Connection. It is possibly one of the best books I've read this year.

Now I'm going to reread an old favourite of mine: The Lion's Game

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I'm halfway through Gone Girl Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and there isn't one of these characters I would want in my life. I'm enjoying the book, and they're holding my interest, but these people are basketcases from the starting bell on, and more than once I've asked "what in god's name do you SEE in him/her?" about just about every one.

Mark Linton (bogeylinton) | 122 comments Thought Gone Girl was atad too long but interesting, I am reading Destiny Of The Republic by Candace Millard a bio of James A Garfield excellent

I've been eyeing that in the bookstore, Mark.

Yvonne | 18 comments I couldn't put the book down, but it would be hard fo find more consistently unlikeable protagonists. Every time you think you have it figured out, there's a surprise. Contrived it is, but well done. I thought it interesting how clueless her parents were. She certainly was the "Amazing Amy."

Susan (susanjoseph) | 70 comments I am reading The Murder of Halland Pia Juul's thoughtful novel on love and death set in a Danish fjord. Excellent.

Tay | 12 comments Currenty reading The Messenger by Daniel Silva

message 2160: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne | 18 comments There are several Scandinavian series-in addition to Wallender,of course-that have been recommended to me. I look forward to reading them.

message 2161: by Linda (new)

Linda I'm reading The Beautiful Mystery. Oh, how I love this series! Reading about Chief Inspector Gamache and his co-workers, friends and family is like being with old friends again. I love trying to solve the mystery of "who done it" too.

message 2162: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished Gone Girl Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn . Meh.

message 2163: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished Murder With Puffins Murder With Puffins (Meg Langslow, #2) by Donna Andrews . I like these but they're the sort of series I can't read more than one every few months of. Too much to do any more often.

In the middle of Sand Sharks Sand Sharks (Deborah Knott Mysteries, #15) by Margaret Maron .

About to start Out on the Cutting Edge Out on the Cutting Edge (Matthew Scudder, #7) by Lawrence Block .

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 69 comments Reading Graveminder by Melissa Marr by Melissa Marr, and so far I'd reccommmend it as a Halloween read and to those who enjoy eerie reads.

message 2165: by Susan (new)

Susan Boyer (susanmboyer) | 3 comments I just finshed Charlaine Harris's latest Sookie Stackhouse novel, Deadlocked. I loved it! But, I always love her books. This mystery in this one--who killed the part-were and left her on Eric's front lawn--pulled me right in.

message 2166: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished two today -- Kill Shot Kill Shot (Mitch Rapp, #2) by Vince Flynn which means I have only one unread Flynn left. And he's been ill, so I hope he's able to overcome and forge ahead. Also The Hollywood Canteen: Where the Greatest Generation Danced With the Most Beautiful Girls in the World The Hollywood Canteen Where the Greatest Generation Danced With the Most Beautiful Girls in the World by Lisa Mitchell , the primary effect of which was to make me feel like I was there-- which is exactly what I wanted from it.

Really?? Wow... I've heard really good things about this book! Interesting!

Mark Linton (bogeylinton) | 122 comments My lovely wife suggested The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, I would not usually read this semi science fiction book, but as usual she was right, how could I ever doubt her? Great read

Bob Wright | 1 comments Jennifer wrote: "Finished Gone Girl Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Meh."

I agree. I didN't find this book enjoyable at all.

message 2170: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 69 comments Honestly I found Gone Girl horrifying. I lived with someone sorta like that. Good story but too close to the truth to be "enjoyable'

message 2171: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne | 18 comments As I said, despicable characters, but I couldn't putbitbdown. I am curious about Flynn's other books that also sound really dark and disturbing. Has anyone read any of her other books?

message 2172: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikeo) I am reading Kill You Twice by Chelsea Cain. This is book #5 in the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell series. I am 70% complete and enjoying it but I do recommend reading the series in order for a full appreciation of the characters.

Top recommended book from me is Immoral by Brian Freeman. By far, my favorite author in the mystery genre and his first book is a gem.

Immoral (Jonathan Stride, #1) by Brian Freeman

message 2173: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 5 comments Mike, I love Brian Freeman, too! My favorite is The Burying Place.

message 2174: by Aiesha (new)

Aiesha (bigtexasaj) I took a break for a while but I just started back on my beloved "In Death" series by JD Robb with Seduction in Death. I simply LOVE the character's and their personalities in this series. They make me laugh, especially Eve & her husband, Roarke! What a strange yet perfect match! :-)

message 2175: by Tay (new)

Tay | 12 comments I just finished The Wheelmanby Duane Swierczynski. It's fast pace and easy read though no character development. It was okay. Watching The Hunger Game movie tonight and tomorrow I'll pick up Lee Child's new one A Wanted Man. A Wanted Man (Jack Reacher, #17) by Lee Child

message 2176: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am listening to One Summer by David Baldacci and it's definitely not his norm. He writes mystery and A/A but this is a very emotional book. I cried during the first CD. I'm sure not many like it because it is not at all like Baldacci's normal writings but I love it.

Wendy (wendyqld) | 7 comments Hi Im new to the group but been reading mysteries since I was a kid.
I am into Tess Gerritson at the moment and really enjoying them.

message 2178: by Linda (new)

Linda I'm reading The Coroner's Lunch and I love the main character, Dr. Siri! He is so smart and funny and I loved it when he told his boss off. He refuses to go along and is so feisty. I am also reading Enemy Women. I'm enjoying it too.

message 2179: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne | 18 comments I'm reading an older Jeffrey Archer book called "A Prisoner of Birth". It was highly recommended .

message 2180: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyqld) | 7 comments Just finished Tess Gerritsen - The Killing Place. What a brilliant book. Couldnt put it down. Her best yet that I have read.

message 2181: by Aiesha (new)

Aiesha (bigtexasaj) I started The Perfect Husband this weekend while waiting for the next installment in the In Death series at the library. The next day, I got the email telling me that Reunion in Death was ready to check out so... I will be reading both of them! I'm in LOVE with the In Death series & really enjoy Lisa Gardner's writing style. Looking forward to both of them! :-)

message 2182: by Tay (new)

Tay | 12 comments I finished A Wanted Man by Lee Child. It didn't have enough Jack Reacher beating up baddies but still a good read nonetheless. The motel clerk scene had me rolling.

I'm now reading Vince Flynn's American Assassin

message 2183: by Mark (new)

Mark Linton (bogeylinton) | 122 comments Just finished Brad Thor's Black List and I am now reading Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, this was highly touted but I don't really enjoy it. Listening to Trophy Hunt by CJ Box, like his Joe Pickett series

message 2184: by Mark (new)

Mark Linton (bogeylinton) | 122 comments I take it back, I finished Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and really enjoyed it. I am some times too quick to judge, shame on me'

message 2185: by Linda (new)

Linda Just started Trust Your Eyes by Linwood Barclay. I've always enjoyed his books and this one is starting out well. I didn't enjoy The Coroner's Lunch as much as I thought I was going to. When they got into the stuff about the angry spirits from the trees possessing people I lost interest. Not my thing and unexpected. I did finish it though.

I just read Kill Shot Kill Shot by Vince Flynn a few weeks ago. Love Vince Flynn. Closing in on the end of my current reads so I can get to A Wanted Man (Jack Reacher, #17) by Lee Child and I'll keep an eye out for the scene you mention. Thanks for the heads up!

American Assassin is a great book. I'm going to go on a Mitch Rapp kick here the next couple of months to catch up. I read one a while back and found out I read it out of order so now I'm starting at the beginning.

message 2193: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am now listening to Zero Day by David Baldacci and loving it.

message 2194: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapurdykong) I read and reviewed Death Play Pokers last week. I really enjoyed the book, so now I'm reading another mystery by a Canadian author, which is also good yet completely different. Quarrel With the Foe by Mel Bradshaw is police procedural set in Toronto in the 1920's.

message 2195: by Tay (new)

Tay | 12 comments Mark wrote: "If you like Vince Flynn, you will also like Brad Thor"

I read Thor's first book. I think Flynn is a little better in my opinion.

I listened to the first three books on audiobook from the 'brary. Reader was Carolyn McCormick and she did a great job. After #3 I was definitely a fan so I started to read to help support the author and get a visual perspective on her writing. I see that the reader has changed for books #4 and #5 (Christina Delaine) so I am curious to see how she does compared to CM. I may listen to Kill You Twice in a few months to check it out. It's tough to move from the audiobook if the reader does a really good job putting a voice to the characters.
