rose I thought it was ADORABLE when Harry danced with Hermione, I wish it would have been in the book, because it was SO CUTE!!
Even Though I like the ginny-harry ship and the Ron-hermione ship, I still thought the dance worked well with their friendship!

How are all my Fellow HP Nerds feeling about it????

Emma Well, I have to say that I disagree entirely, mostly because I know the characters so well. Unfourtunately, Harry would never be that charming. He just doesn't know how to be. He wouldn't know what to do to cheer Hermoine up, and in the book, he didn't. He is really quite clueless when it comes to being a gentlemen, and its part of his character. When Harry spontaneously started dancing with Hermione, I couldn't stop thinking about how very un-Harry the action really was. My thoughts turned into frustration, stemming from the fact that I hate it when a movie deviates from the original characters. I'm fine with plot changes; they are necessary. But messing with the characters is, to me, a very heinous crime indeed. So was the dance sweet? Yes. Did it coincide with what the characters actually would have done? No. Did I like it? Not at all, specifically for the reasons I have described here.

Kristen While I didn't think it was that terrible of an addition for Harry's character, I also didn't think it really fit. I thought it was a little goofy. But I understand that they wanted something quick to have him cheer her up a little, so I didn't really mind.

rose hmm. I didn't really think about it not being part of his character.. I'll read the books again, and really try to pay attention to that! :)

I agree that it may not have been part of Harry in the book's character, but Harry in the movie has displayed a sense of charm and sensitivity since at least the third movie. It fit with that Harry. And while I agree that it sucks when characters are changed (I have a HUGE rant if you ever want to hear it about Snape in the 6th movie), it was such a gorgeous scene that I kind of forgive it.

I feel like if I'm going to pick a battle with the movies, that scene is SO far down the list, that I don't have a problem with it. There are some plot changes in the 6th movie that are unforgivable, and that were not necessary.

rose There are changes in all the movies! I wish they would have kept All the Quidditch..I loved quidditch.

Linda If you cut out the books and focus on the movies then this scene fit in fine and was very sweet (although a little to long) but it kinda made me ship for Harry and Hermione and I'd certainly never done that before!

You're right of course. This is by no means the most horrible change they made (I know, don't get me started on the 6th one either. The Weasley house?! WHAT!? And I don't even want to talk about Part 2 of the DH) but since it was the topic of this discussion, I figured I'd state my views. And yes, they have been changing Harry's character for quite some time now. They have changed almost all of the characters, some more greviously than others. (Though Ron and Hagrid have remained pretty much perfect through out all of them) So, even if I did think the scene was a moment of wonderful movie-making, the Harry Potter freak inside of me would still have been screaming NO! And I think I know what you mean about Snape in the 6th movie. He was being waaaaaay too obvious. Practically telling everyone that he wasn't the bad guy at all. Which was really lame. Alan Rickman, as wonderful as he is, was never a very accurate Snape anyway. Too quiet and subdued.

a.greed. I have the same "HP Freak," inside me, too. I feel the urge to scream when I see certain things, and the only way I can get rid of that urge is to 1. re-read the book and see the REAL portayal of what happened, or 2. find some random excuse/justification for why the movie people did what they did so I don't have to waste my energy getting angry.

If I didn't think I'd risk giving myself a hernia, I would start a blog about all the things that make me angry about the HP movies. (I'm sure there are some people out there that have.)

And yes.. Alan Rickman is lovely, but too controlled. The real Snape snapped a few times in the books. I wish we could have seen that.
