Melissa | 5 comments I ran across an article today that mentioned the Jaquet-Droz automata and it tickled a memory. I definitely read a novel that talked about them when I was a child.

Probably YA, I believe it was a chapter book, and my memory suggests that it was mysterious. I think the main character was a young girl, and she either found the autotmata when they had been lost or was looking at them at night in a museum or large house. (The automata are mechanical children, one that can write, one that draws a few different pictures, and one that plays music on a small piano.)

I'm intensely curious as to what this book was. I don't remember how old I was when I read it, but I'd say it can't have been written after 1994 and likely several years (at least) before that. Does anyone remember this book?

Sirvantes | 180 comments Reminds me of The Mystery of the Silent Friends, by Robin Gottlieb. There are three mechanical dolls in the antique shop where little Nina's father works, one that writes, one that draws, and one that plays the spinet.
They provide clues to a missing fortune.

Melissa | 5 comments That is almost certainly it, I can't imagine two books with all those details. Thank you so much!
