Timeslip/ Fantasy- Juvenile, ? 50's-70's. Read in late 70's, felt dated. A girl (& brother/cousin?) on holiday find portal to another land. Not Narnia. Castle, attic room, royalty, magic, fog, sea, windows, monument. Empowerment of children. Maybe British.

Trelawny by Isabelle Holland. I'm only partly sure that it's in Cornwall (lots of places with that name), but it mentions an attic!

It looks as if this was only published in 2005, but... I mean, Enid Blyton - there's a chance that it was printed elsewhere? Any of these subtitles sound right?
Thank you! I think it was definitely YA, aimed maybe for ages 10 or 12+. My feeling is that it was written on the 50’s or 60’s. The biggest memory is that a child goes away from home and is transported elsewhere. Has more of an Alan Garner feeling than anything else I can think of.
Rainbowheart! We might have hit the jackpot here.
I’m ordering The Castle of Yew & The River at Green Knowe and am intrigued by Crowns & hope to order Crowns as well. They all look like great reads but also potentially the book I’ve been looking for!
Oh, come on, bookel. You know the bumping rule, you just don't think it applies to you. The rules apply to everyone.
It's your shtick that's rude. Other people are able to follow the rule without falsely accusing the moderators of being "rude."

Thank you for responding Joan. It is annoying with 2D text people cannot tell a genuine query with a real person wanting to help. But this forum is too frustrating, cannot even help with an old post without people jumping on you and assuming you are "bumping" for no reason. After ten years I have had enough.
I’m sorry for any confusion. Truly still trying to find this old read. There is a little list going of books which may be The One. In my dream life I am able to purchase every book on the list without a worry - and have the time to read them all! I am not sure I know the rules here. I have found everyone on this forum to be helpful and (actually) inspiring. I’ve been a little verklempt over the care others have put into trying to figure out the title this weird lost little book from my tweenescence.

Curtain of Mist? It involves children sent from abroad to live in a Scottish castle and time travel back to Celtic Britain.Published 1956 and blue cover.
Curtain of Mist is on my list of books to try - thank you, Rose. It doesn’t immediately say yes but it is worth a try!
Argle's mist (Republished in USA as: Curtain of mist) by M. Pardoe https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-re...
An ebay item shows a more vibrant dustjacket and some internal pages, albeit blurred.

The three Macalister children are visiting their grandparents in Scotland. Walking in the mist,Martin meets a strangely dressed boy named Cymbel, who says he is the son of a king. Later, all the Macalisters and their tutor meet Cymbel.Again a mist rises and the familiar country about them disappears. Cymbel is indeed the son of aking in Celtic Britain and they have been transported to the same spot in pre-history. https://core.ac.uk/reader/4821670
Argle's Causeway by M. Pardoe
Argle's Oracle by M. Pardoe
It's a series https://www.librarything.com/nseries/...
I just got a copy of The House on the Hill delivered, and I don't see it mentioned already. It's 1987, though. I know that's a decade off. It's too close to ignore, though. A free bump if not.
Joan said: "I do think there was a medieval & magical component as well as a stone monument or [dais]. An attic room. The girl gets separated from her friends and tries to get back to the 'past' to find them maybe."You should edit to include that in your original post.
What about these? The House on Parchment Street involves cousins and time travel/ timeslip
Red Hart Magic - also cousins and time travel
@brook I can not seem to access original post to edit. Would if I could figure it out. Thank you for the tip!

Iirc House on Parchment Street is mostly internal to the house itself. I think there is a bricked up tunnel, maybe? (But don't recall any alt worlds). I think it had a scene where the girl goes to sleep with the bed warming pan in the sheets (which she doesn't know is a fire hazard) if that rings any bells.

Joan, you can edit your posts using the full Desktop Website or the Mobile Website - not the App. (Be sure to share any new information in a new post, so we don't miss it.)

Got it - Thank you!

Definitely think it was written prior to 1976. Thank you!

Pardoe is fascinating. Would love to read the Argle's books - I think I've read at least one of them, maybe the book I'm looking for!
Try bookfinder.com (searches multiple sites). Curtain of mist is on abebooks.com. Or the public library. Is it possible to do an interlibrary loan?
Treasure in the Dark
"...a family come to live in a centuries-old manor house on the Cornish coast with their soldier father & French Resistance heroine mother."
Published 1957. An Abebooks listing has "Grey cloth binding with dark-blue lettering and picture on spine, not faded. Wine-colour free endpapers". Furrowed Middlebrow discussed it in 2018, and I think that's where the synopsis we have comes from.
I can't find much if any further info on this title, and not even genres. But worth a mention! Plenty of copies for sale - if you think it worthwhile, could ask for further info from a seller on abe or similar. :)
I know you said not E. Nesbit, but it does sound a lot like The House of Arden, about Edward and Elfrida and a magic mole.
I think I've just commented, but can't see it, so apologies if I've done it twice. You did say not E. Nesbit, but it does sound like The House of Arden, which is not so well known ( she did write a lot). It's about a girl called Elfrida and her brother, and a magic mole called Mauldiwarp who helps them go back in time to find a hidden treasure.
This is probably not your book, but just thought I'd throw it out there -- The Amazing Vacation by Dan Wickenden
