I know I do. I don't read through a series back to back. It's just not my reading style. There have been a few moments where I did, but I like to read around.

I've noticed lately, I'm having trouble deciding which books I should read first. They all sound good. I think I am a serious book flirt. I get so flightly when a book gets my interest, I lose track and go off on the scent of a book that grabs me. The good news is that the challenges I do really help me to prioritize my reading schedule. Also reading for review books. I'm trying to read books I've owned longer over reading newly purchased books. If I can, I also use group reads to help me to know what to read next.

How do you organize your reading? What books get first priority when you read? Do you drop whatever when a long-awaited book comes out?

It's tough, Faithmarie. And I always feel behind on the good series. But at least there are good books to look forward to.

message 4: by Amynah (new)

Amynah (minawolf) | 1 comments Personally, this is how I do it: I categorize a set of books as "must read". I then sort it on good reads with avg rating.

Now, I totally reserve the right to not follow this method when a book has just been released that I have been waiting for. Or if I start a book that has a good rating and can only get into 2 chapters before getting annoyed. Or, if I'm just not in the mood for the genre that's next.

That's just my method!

That's a good idea, Amynah. I do have a plan to read soon shelf. Maybe I should use it more. I have stacks of books in on the shelf in my room that are sooner reads. Of course, I always forget about my Kindle books!

❤️ Dorsey aka Wrath Lover Reviews ❤️ If I discover a new series (which since becoming a GR member happens ALOT!!)I will get all the books and read that series so when a new book to the series comes out I am ready for it (just did that with the Night Huntress Series & am now ready to read the just released book #6).

Other than that I alway's have book's on hand that I want to read, it just depends on what genre I am in the mood for I think.

message 7: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 252 comments This is the very reason I join so many challenges. It helps me pick what to read next....from my hugh, and growing, TBR pile. Plus the mini-challenges give me monthly accomplishment, killing 2 birds with one stone. :-)

Michelle(Chelle) aka Nightshade - Cake Whisperer (michmag) I am like Dorsey - if I find a new series that I like I try to buy all the available books and then read them all one right after the other until I am all caught up. Then as new releases in my series come out I read them as soon as possible. If it has been a while between releases then sometimes I re-read the whole series and then read the new installment. I think I am reading like 15 different series right now. Next would be spin-offs of said series and then random stand alone books that appeal to me.

It's crazy how many series I am reading right now...and adding more it seems daily as my reading tastes expand.

Wan, I guess those challenges come in handy, huh? I'm really glad I started doing so many.

message 10: by Susinok (new)

Susinok For the most part I just go with whatever I feel like reading at the time. I read genres in streaks so if I'm on a historical romance streak, I won't read the latest PNR until I'm back to readinn PNR again, and so on.

Sometimes when I don't know what to read next I just start on something that sounds good already on my Kindle and go from there.

message 11: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (dejameek) | 2 comments I can't sit down and read an entire series start to finish. I have to space them out over time. So what I do is stack them into three piles. The first pile has priority: books that I've had from the library the longest, earliest book in a series if I have more than one out, etc. Second stack has medium priority. I add one of those to the first stack every time I finish one. The third stack is books I just checked out, or books that I own. I have a veeeery efficient system....sometimes...not really....Of course, sometimes I completely forgo the system and just read whatever I want.

I am in awe of you guys who can space out your series books. I am way too impatient and basically glom a series when I find one I really like. Then I go into withdrawals and am on pins and needles waiting for the next one to come out.

Is it the healthiest system for my mental state? Probably not, but I can't help my obsessive tendencies LOL!

message 13: by Cindi (new)

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 381 comments But Megan, you are missing the fine art of anticipaaaaaaattttttiiiiiioooooonnnnn :P LOL! I actually get bored if I read a series too close together nowdays. I do try to mix up types of books that I read, so I may read a PNR then a Rom-Com or Chick Lit-type, then UF then Suspense BUT since I get so many books from the library now, I kinda have to read according to their time table if its anything current due to their waiting list.

message 14: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 9851 comments Mod
Megan, that's why I space out series. I have this immense crash when I finish a book series. I couldn't stand it when it happened after book six of the Immortals After Dark. So I avoid this if at all possible.

I used to glom authors big time. But now I try to space them out. I don't want to grow jaded with an author's writing style. The same for series or genres.

I like hearing everyone's systems.

message 15: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments I look at the date acquired and progress through the list from oldest up. Most of the time, it means I'm going through library books or ones downloaded for review first, and the ones I have bought get relegated to 'sometime' because I know they'll always be there since I own them.

But I also vary it up a bit - like, if I've read so many historicals that they all start sounding/looking the same, I'll read a PNR or a light contemporary to refresh my brain a bit

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I do this too --- but with series, if I have the next book, I typically will keep reading the series. Big series person. Right now I have several books that are the first in the series, but not their sequels. Will tell if I want to get further into the series right away by how much I like them.

Wrote a reminder list of books to read in the immediate future over other ones last night to try and help me out with this.

message 18: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I also pace myself with series (one book per month) because I don't want them to end. The problem is that now I'm in various stages of reading about 20 series. I just keep beginning new ones.
I have difficulty prioritizing too. I might try out one or two of the systems mentioned here.

message 19: by Roshio (new)

Roshio | 26 comments Ever since I got my Kindle, my reading list has gone haywire. Now I don't just give up series and move on, I give up books too. Just so many in one device. I'm trying to work on it though.

In general, I have no problem stopping a series to start another, its usually easy enough to catch up.

t'irla ~The Bookslayer~ aka Barbara (tirla) I'm very much a series reader..and I am very linear thinking. I MUST get all available books in a series..it's almost compulsive...only then will I start the series and read it back to back until I'm done..Although I have been finding that since reading DarK Hunter and Carpathians..the series are soooooo long that I have taken a break and read a "filler" book. Now picking a series and a filler book is a issue in it's self:)...I read the back of all the books (or GR write up) and see what grabs me..the one I'm most in the mood for I read...now filler books are single's not part of a series that usually someone gave me and I"m not too sure about. I hate falling in love with a filler book that is part of a series cause then I have 2 series going and my poor little head gets tooooo confused *fluffs her blonde hair*...

Prioritizing? What's that? I buy books and the piles get higher and higher. I usually just grab whatever catches my fancy to read.

Maria | 135 comments I have a hard time. All the good books you gals have recommended, I just want to read them all at once, Its a shame I haven't got 6 eyes and a compartmentalised brain so I can read 3 books at the same time. Its going to take me years. On top of that, new books are coming in all the time !

I want to read historical, contemporary, suspense, then travel and the biographies, the list is endless.

message 26: by ~Jennifer~ (new)

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) I have book ADD. I'll have a list of what I want to read for the week all ready to go and I'll get distracted and end up with a whole bunch other books read. My pretty little list gets left sitting there...usually with doodles on it and nothing crossed off. :( So yeah. I have trouble prioritizing. lol

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 23 comments I'm totally all over the map when it comes to reading. Unless it involves a series. If I get a book in a series I don't want to leave until I finish every book I can. Which means it gets real annoying when I finish a book and I can't find the next one fast enough!

Other than series obsess, I get in moods where I want something scary or romantic or fantastic and scour my shelves to find something to satisfy me.

Do you find yourself confusing series? I just about always read a series from start to finish (or what's been released) then move on to something else. I do keep in mind the type of series I just finished when I'm choosing what to read next. Ex. Finish a Anita Blake book then look for something lighter, or finish a YA book then I will not jump in to something like Anita Blake.

message 31: by Missyb (new)

Missyb | 98 comments I do keep in mind what I just finished when choosing the next book to read (after Anita Blake I might choose something fluffier) but what is happening in life or what kind of mood I'm in will help me choose which book to read next. I do try to finish a whole series (at least what has been released) before moving on to another. After a long series I try to choose the latest release of a series that I've read the rest of. After a few of those, then I'll jump into a series.

Every time I'm on this site I have a new author or series to check out. I have about 60 or so series in my book rolodex. Many have been recomendations from here, and some are "if you like this author check this author" and others have been from short stories included with a author that I have already read.

message 33: by Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ (last edited Dec 16, 2011 04:57PM) (new)

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 152 comments Me...I'm a mess! With all the reading challenges I started a year ago with GR...I adopted so many series that I hardly have time to read the next installment when they come out. I rarely am a serial reader...I like variety. The TBR pile is classified with rating and when a (or a few) reading challenge comes along, I try to do equal part started series clean up and discover new authors.

It's hard to keep up because I am not reading fast enough. The downside of using reading challenges to dictate my reading is that I favor books to fit the challenges and push back series that I like but do not fit in a reading challenge. I just can't win.

Missyb, I don't confuse stories. You think I would, but it hasn't happened. But I tend to read around, so maybe that's why. Sometimes I might forget a few points if it's been a while since I read the last book in the series, but it comes back to me as I read the next book.

Valerie, I feel like I'm in a similar boat at times.

message 35: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 175 comments @Valerie~ I am in the same boat.
I am a mess when it comes to reading. I love to read series but I like to get the first 3-4 books then read through them. Then go to the next series. Of course single ones sneak in there and I get hooked on that author so I want to read more of her/him. Then (like now) there is a movie coming out on that book so I need to hurry and read the book so I can go see the movie... The best thing I ever did is get a nook and join GR so that I can keep track of everything. Of course this place is the best to support me in my troubling times with all the hunky men....

Lady D -
You're definitely not alone, and you're not the only book flirt out there. :)

I'm relatively new to GR, so I've not really been able to utilize the challenges as a means of organizing or even prioritizing my reading until just recently. Frex, I have four that I ought to be reading, but still seem to pass over in favor of others on my TBR list . . . and brand new ones that I all of a sudden just *must* have. (It must be a sickness.)

My big December challenge is just a means of cleaning up TBRs, so I've tried to be fairly diligent about at least scanning through them first. However, there have been a couple new additions to series that hit the stores this month, and for them I did drop everything else I was reading -- like a bad habit!

Rachel the Book Harlot | 217 comments Yes! I have enormous problems prioritizing my reading! I usually have a book in mind but then someone will post a book that sounds interesting and it will get my attention...until someone else posts another book, and so and so on. lol It's awful. lol

Rachel the Book Harlot | 217 comments Maybe I need a better shelving system - like splitting them up in more specific classifications. The issue is, will I actually stick with them...because I'm like a small child with ADD. Just call me Instant Gratification Girl. :D
