Kristen I've never read any of the interviews or anything, does the author ever say what happened to James' family? I just assumed they're dead, since they're not around....
But I always wondered why Harry never met his family or even knew anything about them.

Good question. I'll wait for the answer with you.

Hina It was mentioned that James's parents were quite old when they had him and because of this they must have died when James was at his last years of school or slightly later.

Emma I wondered this myself. Sirius had mentioned that he was always welcome at the Potter's house for dinner. Also, it was said that James had the air of a child that had been well taken care of, even adored. So the Potter's were obviously good people, but it does cause one to wonder what happened to them. Did Mr. Potter give James the invisibility cloak at the time of his death? I don't think so, because that doensn't really fit with the timeframe of it all. They must have passed away either in James' late years of school, or sometime during the three years before his death. How it came about is a complete mystery though. It also leads one to wonder what happened to Lily's parents. They were Muggles, but with knowledge of the magical world. Had they still been alive, they certainly could've taken Harry in when Lily died. But, they must have passed away in that mysterious time period that the Potter's did. It is all very interesting, and I would love to know the answers.

Gretchen I have wondered about the same things. What happened to all of the grandparents? Hope someone knows.

Natalie loves Orlando Bloom! j.k. rowling only mite no the answers.

I think James must have been given the cape long before his father died, because it talks about him using it at school like Harry did.

Kristen *sigh* yes, I always wonder about the things that nobody seems to know....lol

I have also wondered about Lily's parents. And that would have actually been an option for Harry if they were alive, since they shared Lily's blood. And a much better one.

It also makes me wonder about the extended family. I mean, all we really see is Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley. Was there really no one else? No other aunts, uncles, cousins? Nothing? No close friends of the family that would want to keep tabs on Harry and make sure he was taken care of?
That just seems so sad.

Hina I think there were other relatives, but the Dursley's were the only close relatives that Harry had.

I think Lily's parents must have been very supportive and they too must have died before Lily's death because then Harry would've gone to them.

Georgie In the first book, Harry sees a lot of his dead family in the mirror of erised(sp?). I always assumed they all came to an end.

Yes, it is clear that they all came to an end somehow. The question is how? What happened to them all? God, now I really want to know!
Oh, and you did spell Erised right. If you notice, it is desire spelled backwards. The inscription on it is written backwards as well. ;)

Melissa Eisenmeier Maybe James' siblings and cousins were all deeply involved in The Order of the Pheonix and were killed and/or tortured to the point of insanity, like Neville's parents? I know J. K. Rowling said on her website that her editors cut out a lot of stuff they deemed unnecessary, so perhaps the part about what happened to the rest of Harry's parents got edited out, but the part about Neville's didn't, for whatever reason.

she kinda hinted that they were dead 2

OH! I didn't know that! :D

Yeah, that's kind of my reason for wondering, actually. Because it seems unlikely that all of Harry's family consisted of only his parents and grandparents who all happen to die before he's old enough to know any of them. And if not, I have to wonder if they were involved in the Order or if Voldemort went after them to get to Harry's parents. Because if that's the case, you'd think they'd at least get some kind of mention in the books other than just Harry seeing them in the mirror, telling us they're dead.
I mean, maybe Lily's family thought more like the Dursleys did and thought Lily and James were sort of strange or whatever. Not to mention they wouldn't know anything about Voldemort and how terrible James' and Lily's deaths were. They were probably just told that Harry went to live with his aunt and uncle and was fine.
But I can't help wondering about James' side. They would know how and why they died. I mean, you'd think that even the most distant known Potter relative would want to know Harry was taken care of and be close to him.

I understand why Neville's parents got more of a description though. They were extremely brave and driven insane by Bellatrix. Which also gives her more credibility as a formidable death eater. And they were Neville's parents rather than extended family.
Also there's the thing about how Neville fit in as an option to the boy described in the prophecy because of his parents facing Voldemort and all of that.

Yeah, I guess it just all got cut...be nice if there was some kind of extra scenes we could get as an ebook or something...

[Coco] I think they're dead.... I thought there was something about how James' parents died while he was at Hogwarts in the book, but maybe I'm wrong....
