Courting the Enemy (Love Inspired Historical) by Renee Ryan

How exciting to have Savannah Elliott, the heroine from COURTING THE ENEMY, a September release from Love Inspired Historical with us today.

1. Tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I'm the sole bookkeeper for Pembroke Shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida. That may not seem interesting to you in 2011, but it's 1943. The world is at war and a woman with an accounting degree is very valuable with so many of our young men away fighting for our country.

2. What do you do for fun?

There isn't a lot of time for fun. People are dying. Hitler is winning the war. It's a tough time for us all. My friend Kate wants to head to Atlanta next week for a shopping trip. Sort of seems like a frivolous endeavor, but Kate's brother was recently killed in the war. If that's what she wants to do then that's what we're going to do.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I dread a heart-to-heart with my mother. She's always been so happy in her role as the perfect wife, mother and hostess. Her husband's needs come first. My father is a very successful, powerful man. His life runs smoothly because my mother handles all the details. But I wonder if she's ever wanted more out of her life. Has she always been satisfied with simply being a wife and mother? I'm not sure I want to know the answer.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Betrayal. Or rather, I'm afraid of another betrayal. My husband betrayed me in the most humiliating way possible. He's dead now, and I'll never get the chance to ask him why. I'll never know if I would have eventually found it in my heart to forgive him. It's frightening to think that I might not have.

5. What do you want out of life?

Peace. I don't mean world peace (although that's what we all want, especially now). I mean inner peace. I want to be a woman who accesses joy no matter my circumstances. Christ is the only way, I know this in my head. But I'm having a hard time accessing this type of peace in my daily walk.

6. What is the most important thing to you?
Loyalty, plain and simple. With our country at war I crave it all the more. As a German-American I'm well aware of the necessity to make my allegiance to my country clear. Suspicion has fallen over some of my father's friends and colleagues, all because they have German last names. I don't understand this. Why would anyone give their allegiance to a monster like Hitler simply because they are of German descent? It boggles the mind.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I'm a proud Jane Austen fan. I also adore Dickens and anything by the Bronte sisters. What can I say? I'm old-fashioned. I love the classics.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wouldn't be so trusting. I've had several very hard lessons lately, the kind that have taught me to look below the surface like never before. First impressions cannot be relied upon. If only I had learned that lesson sooner.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No pet. My days at the shipyard are long. It wouldn't be fair to any animal.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Regency England would be my first choice. It was a simpler time, where balls, soirees and parties were the main event. And the biggest challenge of the day was deciding what dress to wear at the next grand ball.

Judy I enjoyed both Dangerous Allies and Courting the Enemy.
It was more relaxing reading Courting the Enemy though as I was on US soil rather then the first book where I had to slink around the shadows in Germany :-)

Judy, I loved them both as well. I agree with you- Courting the Enemy was a less intense read than Dangerous Allies. I think my heart was on overload the whole time I read Dangerous Allies. GREAT read. But I also loved Courting the Enemy. It was really sobering to think how close the Nazis could have gotten (and probably did!) to being on American soil. YIKES!
