Lobstergirl What did you like, and dislike about this book? I found Bellow's writing exquisite. I loved his earthy depictions of characters like Grandma Lausch. What I could have done without was the approximately 1/6 of the book that takes place in Mexico, with Augie and Thea training an eagle to hunt. I think we're supposed to see Augie and Caligula (the eagle) as kindred, in their refusals to be trained. But there was something about the change of setting that I didn't like; Chicago was such a great setting. Up to that point I felt like it had been a 5-star book; the Mexico section was 3-stars, and after that it went back up to 4-stars.

Emily Loved his writing! It just didn't have that 'super-wow' factor that a 5-star book would have, but I defintely recommend this book!

Karen Bellows writes wonderful prose and this book is very high on my list of great reads.

David Funny, Lobstergirl, the Mexico part was about the only part I really enjoyed. That's what is so wonderful about the world of literature - one persons trash is another's treasure. My wife hated Lolita, but it is one of my all time faves. For the record, I have a full review of March here.

Jeff Augie March is a great book and Bellow is a wonderful author. Lobstergirl, if you like Bellow, I would suggest Humboldt's Gift, Herzog and Henderson, the Rain King.
