P3 on-programme reviews

The Wave, by Morton Rhue, not a book for the classroom, but an interesting story with links to 'behaviour management'.

Great review, Laura, thanks! Have you read any other books by Berlie Doherty? I recommend Children Of Winter and Treason.

The Hargrave family are a small family who are physically quiet weak. They have a new arrival to the family a little boy. He will not eat anything and the family worries he will be weak and unwell. One day Mrs. Hargraves finds an avocado and gives this to the baby – and he eats it all up. He continues to eat avocados everyday and grow very strong – so strong that he has super human powers.
This is a great book to use with children of all ages as a stimulus to think about meanings of ‘hope’ and ‘strength’. It can also work well with talking about new arrivals to families, groups, classes and how they can bring new thing to the old dynamics.

A young boy sets off to the woods and bumps into a hungry wolf – who quickly decides he will eat the boy for his supper. However the wolf is quickly tricked into running around collecting ingredients by the boy for all sorts of recipes and ends up rather confused and tricked out of supper. The book is very funny and comes to an end with the boy going home to supper with his mum – who he gives a bunch of flowers to.
This book allows children to read and explore recipes in a fun and imaginative way. This can be used for both literacy (writing instructions) and numeracy (proportion and ratio).
It also provides a twist to the classic adventure – where the boy finds himself in control of a difficult situation.
It is a great book for guided reading as it can lead to some interesting comprehension questions. It also lends itself well to individual and group reading.
The recipes do not have specific measurements and so can also be used in EYFS where children can be encouraged to make their own recipes up and get used to using language for instruction and elements of more and less for mathematical development – as well as addressing creative development.

This is a very fun book and takes us on another adventure with Elmer the elephant. Elmer’s friends are not happy about the cooler weather they are experiencing – so Elmer takes them on an adventure to help them to see how to have fun in the cold. Elmer leads his friends on a long walk and helps them to see how walking can help to get them warm and then he leads them to an area in the jungle full of snow. The elephants have a great time playing in the snow and also sliding on the frozen water. Elmer tricks his friends by making a snow model of himself and this creates a great element of suspense and awe for the readers.
This was a book I read with a nursery group to compliment their “Winter” topic. The book introduces language for this topic really well and helps children get familiar with words such as ‘cold’, ‘frozen’, ‘ice’, ‘snow’ and ‘warm’. The book also created a great lead up to a physical activity we carried out outdoors – where we followed a trail and did different movements and actions to get warmed up – all of which nicely addresses the Personal, Social, and Emotional, knowledge and understanding of the world, communication, language and physical areas of the early years learning goals. The book also led to a focus activity for the knowledge and understanding of the world area – where the children where allowed to make ice and explore how water freezes to make ice and then how it melts when warm and becomes water again.

A very simple book - with 2 words - 'Banana' and 'Please'.
The book follows the interaction between two Monkeys who both want the Banana.
It see's how the Monkeys start of unable to share and then the magic word 'Please' is used and we see a glorious sharing of the Banana.
The limited use of words and the very clear and animated illustrations allows the reader to make the story what they want and allows children to interact and be creative in the process.
It is a fantastic book to use in EYFS to promote understanding around manners, kindness and sharing - helping to address the emotional development of very young children.

Thanks Danny, that's certainly a great book to invest in. Lucy Coats is a great author. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-1... suggests that boys are catching up with their reading, which is good news.

This is my review of 'Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?' by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle.

It's a great book, Anna. It would be fantastic to use to inspire collages with children as well.

Thank you! I love the look of the Cloud Tea Monkeys, Tara. Mal Peet is an amazing author for young adults; I wasn't aware that he wrote picture books too.
