Great reviews, Sarah and Zaynab. I've been meaning to get hold of Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Book? after it was recommended to me. I'll look harder now!

Great reviews, everyone. Eddie, I agree- it's strange that we've been telling stories of witches, wolves and girls who sleep for 100 years for ever, yet we forget that there is something pleasurable in scary stories! Neil Gaiman has written some fantastic stories for children; The Graveyard Book is one of my favourites.

Little Beauty by Anthony Browne

Thanks Zaynab. Anthony Browne is a favourite of mine, too. Have you read Mr Big, another lovely book about a misunderstood gorilla?

I really like the idea of animals behaving like humans in story books!
Great reviews, Eoin, thanks. I don't know the Phillippa Pearce or A Cat Called Curiosity. The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse is my favourite retelling of The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. It's a great animal fable.

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... It is a great book; children still love it. I'm intrigued by reviews of Breadcrumbs which is about a girl who relates to the world around her through fantasy books, and has a White Which/ Snow Queen character.

Great reviews. It's wonderful to plot your developing subject knowledge and understanding of how books can be used creatively to excite children and develop their reading comprehension.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is a book about a young boy called Milo. Milo wants to play imaginary adventure games with the other children in the play ground but is often given roles he does not want. When Milo would like to be the lion he is told he is not strong enough and is asked to be the monkey. Then when Milo would like to be the pirate captain he has to settle for being the deck boy as he is too small to be captain.
Each day he goes home deflated and his mum helps him to see another point of view and helps him explore his imagination and make something he thought to be dull very exciting. She helps him to see swinging as a monkey is incredibly exciting and being the deck boy means he gets to be the ships look- out as well! Soon Milo’s mum helps him to understand to be different is a great thing and that’s what makes him so special.
Milo’s new outlook on the situation gives him enough confidence to create his own game in the playground and he gets to choose which role he plays and his friends all play too.
I read this book with a class of year ones they really enjoyed the interactive pictures and the repetition of language and words.
I used the book to look at tolerance and how we can play well together in the playground. It was a great tool and it really helped me to engage such young children in a discussion about the complicated elements of self esteem and individual differences and how we can all embrace diversity.
