Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Direct link to Amazon Artemis Fowl

No Spoilers here please

(A spoiler is something about the plot that might spoil the story for someone who hasn't got quite as far as you)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I have done the one-click thing. Now if you can all do a sun dance I will be ready to go!

Thanks Jud!

message 3: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Downloaded and ready to go. Put on hold 'cause I have to go to a model railway show with OH. Hmm will take Kindle with me.

message 4: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (kittykindlesmum) | 2 comments I have downloaded this, and will give it a go, I may surprise myself and like it! I will start reading it tonight.

message 5: by Jo (new)

Jo | 2 comments I've been hesitating over reading this for a while, so it's nice to have something to give me a gentle push! All downloaded and ready to go.

Thanks Jud!

message 6: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The only thing I have read before by him was his follow up to the Dounglas Adams' books and to me, it didn't cut the mustard. I've heard a lot about Artemis Fowl though and I'm prepared to give it a go.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Oooh, I loved the Artemis Fowl book...I'll have to re-read it to refresh my memory.

message 8: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments You're getting awfully cheeky simon.

Hope you all enjoy it :o) and sorry if you don't!

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Did you choose it Jud...well done if you did, it's a great book!

message 10: by Chookgate (new)

Chookgate | 74 comments I got the sample of this a long time ago, but didn't particularly like it and deleted it. I'll get the sample again and give it another go.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I one-clicked then went to the charity shop for a browse. Imagine my surprise when Artemis Fowl was there in paperback.

I explained that I had bought the eBook and thought it was reasonable they should GIVE me the paperback as it was just an older format of the same thing. The lady in Cancer research didn't seem to be able to grasp the idea.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Isnt there a DVD as well? You should have that, too!

Meant to say, Ive clicked it and plan on spending tomorrow afternoon sprawled on the couch reading it. If anyone would like to bring me chocolates and cups of tea while I read, you'd be most appreciated.

I think that the only way that Simon can fairly judge our recipe competition is to actually cook all the recipes! Then of course there will be quite a lot for one man and one cat to eat - so he can bring some out to you, Patti!! :0)

message 14: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Not a book I would have gone for, but will happily give it a try, hoping to get surprised :)

message 15: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I've left a review (:

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I read it a couple of years ago and I thought it was ok but not brilliant.

message 17: by Angela (new)

Angela (bubblyfish) | 53 comments Not normally the type of book I would choose so I downloaded the sample to try it first.

message 18: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'll try anything once - except incest and folk dancing.
I wish I could remember who said that!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Got it and will have a stab at it, but its not my usual genre.

message 20: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (carolinecaroline) | 69 comments Downloaded, but I'm still only 63% through Chrysalids. These group reads are coming thick and fast!

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments kids got this on kindle a wee while back so will gladly give it a go.

message 22: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Just downloaded the book.Like others not one I would normally read but hey, thats what this group is all about.Congratulations Jud.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments 13% can't say much really but it is easy reading and entertaining so far.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Ingnite wrote: "I'll try anything once - except incest and folk dancing.

It was Sir Thomas Beecham ;o)

message 25: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I had 2 books in mind and i went for this one because i thought it was one that people wouldnt normally go for hope you enjoy it!

message 26: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Ah, Sir Thomas Beecham - a hero of mine. He also told off a lady cellist. He said "Madam, you have God's greatest gift to man between your legs and all you can do is scratch it!"

20% into the book and I'm finding it a bit twee and fey and dare I say, derivative. However, onward and upward. I'm not disliking it shall we say.

message 27: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 15 comments I'm giving this read a miss. I have it on my Kindle but don't have the time for it this month.

Hope you all enjoy it.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to be missing this one too - but will read the discussions with interest. Enjoy.

:0)

message 29: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm still wondering why he has s girl's name? Artemis is the Hunting goddess - like Diana.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I'm having to re-read it as I've got a lousy memory, but I do remember enjoying it because I bought some of the later ones.
I must admit I didn't get on with White Fang...I just wasn't in the mood for it.

message 31: by Jane (new)

Jane (beetlejane) | 82 comments This looks good, so I have just 1-clicked. I have gone through a lean spell - 3 freebies I had started to read & then trashed! I wasn't sure what to start next but this looks interesting

message 32: by Angela (new)

Angela (bubblyfish) | 53 comments I read the sample and found it light and enjoyable so I've one-clicked it. Just goes to show you can't always judge a book by its genre!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Had a tricky day so I think I might take a pint of beer, a packet of pickled onion monster munches and my kindle into a soft chair and carry on with Artmeis....

Any minute now :)

message 34: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments 20% in and so far so good.So different from anything else I have read.I never read much fantasy when young I was more into classics.I keep stopping trying to think what I would have made of this book when I was 12.Difficult,as it was so long ago!

message 35: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments 34% in and I can't get into it. Maybe it's just that fairy/elf/trolls stories are just not for me... Or maybe my head's just not in it at the moment... will persist though !

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just read the introduction and now popping up to get a cup of tea. I think I'm really going to enjoy this!

message 37: by Phil (new)

Phil Harrison (hugorune) | 11 comments Had a look at the sample and it didn't really grab me so I think I will give this a miss.

message 38: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm warming to it (praise from Ignite?) I can cope with triolls and such - I would donate my back teeth to Sir Terry Pratchett - but this isn't in that league.

message 39: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments It is very childish but thats what i like about it.

message 40: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments It's not doing it for me. I am surprised as I like this sort of thing. Struggling.

message 41: by Aunty Janet (new)

Aunty Janet (janetauty) | 296 comments I downloaded the sample and read that yesterday, but it's really not for me. I'm glad I tried the sample, but don't want to read the rest of the book. Another reason why kindle is so great, sample downloads. Thanks for recommending it anyway.

message 42: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments 51% and still there!

message 43: by Maureen (Mews) (new)

Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments Downloaded and read the sample and it does look interesting. However, I am still struggling to finish The Quiche of Death, right now. Not sure whether the story just isn't grabbing my attention or the fact that it's my first DTB I've read since getting my Kindle and I am finding it quite awkward going back to a paperback. Maybe a bit of both.

message 44: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments well I've decided I'll give up for now. Will read it as bedtime story when I have finished the Golden Acorn...

message 45: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've started its i'm about halfway through. Mummy kindly posted me over my DTB version so i didnt have to pay for it again on kindle. I love it! I'm really enjoying reading it again.

Can anyone with the kindle version tell me if there are random symbols along the bottom of the page or anywhere? Its on my paper copy and i can remember decoding it all when i first read it... And the eternity code one as well. Oh what a wild child i was.

I loved the Golden Acorn Lorraine! I read it in one sitting and then went and downloaded the 2nd one Glasruhen Gate and read it in one go as well. 3rd one is out soon.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments At the start of each chapter there's a square with some symbols in it. For example the first chapter one shows an open book, two triangles with circles at the points, a sort of cross made out of circles, a mushroom, a square and a thing with six sides with lines across it.
I must admit I never knew it was a code...I'll have to study them again now!
;0)

message 47: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments yea i think its the fairy book written out so you can decode it and read it all. Although think the symbols at the start of a chapter are something else though like the chapter title or number or something.

message 48: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I agree Judd, it's a really pretty story so far. Little one seems to enjoy it, the annoying bit is that we have to look through all the trees we pass by on the way to preschool to see if we find a golden acorn now lol !

message 49: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited Sep 07, 2011 07:31AM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I've got quite a few euro € symbols in mine in the dialogue, can anybody enlighten me on what they are meant to be ?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Me too...

At one point I was thinking they were meant to be exclamation marks?
