Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I assumed that too Patti. They seemd to occur where you would expect an exclamation. Maybe it's an Irish exclamation? Begorrah!

message 54: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments me too but I just ignored them...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I've never heard a real irish person say Begorrah!

I've never heard a real Scot say 'the noo' either, and I worked with a lovely Scottish boss for 5 years.
We English are rarely heard to say 'Tinkety-tonk old fruit' either - but, ne'mind eh?

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've heard a scottish person say "the noo" but i've never heard an irish person say "top of the morning to you" (except when someone asked them to) and i lived in Ireland

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Ok - how am I getting on? the thread asks.

Well, I've finished it. I often thought about reading an Atremis Fowl book to see what it was all about. I still don't know why he's got a girlie name!
If it hadn't been a group read there's a possibility I wouldn't have finished it. I found it all a bit too much of a muchness. Another problem I had is that to enjoy a book fully I have to empathise with at least one of the characters and they weren't 'real' to me.

It is very popular with young people and I can see why. It's the sort of fiction where you need to suspend your disbelief - I have to do that with quite a lot of Real Life at my age!

Nevertheless, I like to try something different and I'm glad I read it. Thanks Jud for suggesting it. Not easy trying to pick something for a group as diverse as we are.

message 61: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I finished it too and i love it (not going to pick a book i don't like though am i?), but then i read it for the first time when i was just a little older than the targeted age group so maybe thats why.

Glad so many people have at least attempted to read it and understand that its not to everyone's taste but that was kind of why I choice it, thought it would be good to try something different that most people wouldnt usually have gone for.

Hiya Jud , heres one € on the Kindle copy its the next to last page of chapter 3
Root nearly popped a vein.
'Four €,' Four years? It's a wonder you lasted this long!
As there was a proper question mark and a proper exclamation mark I just puzzled a bit as to what the € could be, but its not vital to the plot ;o)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments gah! i dont have the book with me today but i'll have a look when i get home. must just be a formatting error or something

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I've just started this today - I've borrowed my niece's copy - she very kindly brought it over as they are here to visit my dad in hospital.

PS In this copy the quote from Lynne says "Four...Four years?"

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments € yay! (thanks Gingerlily) anyway € must mean ... wonder why its come out like that on the kindle

Susan (susielily) | 469 comments Tried the samplle and clicked. Seems alright - hope I like it better than Harry Potter.

message 67: by Chookgate (new)

Chookgate | 74 comments Well, I finished it today. I did struggle with it though. I think like Ingnite I'd have enjoyed it more if there had been a character to empathise with. I found it a bit irritating and tedious for at least the first half of the book. I know it is a children's book, but I've read and enjoyed children's books - eg Keys of the Kingdom, Dark Materials, and Percy Jackson. A friend recommended Artemis Fowl a while ago, but I never got around to it until it was picked for this club. The last third of the book picked up the pace a bit though, and was a much better read.

Oh, and I'm Scottish (though lived in England since I was 4), and I say "the noo", as did both my Glaswegian parents.

Susan (susielily) | 469 comments Oh dear, that doesn't bode well.

Chookgate | 74 comments Susan wrote: "Oh dear, that doesn't bode well."

Each to their own - plenty of people have enjoyed it. Maybe it was because I have a couple of books I'm really looking forward to reading, and went for this first because it was the "club read" and I wanted to get it read.

message 70: by Susan (new)

Susan (susielily) | 469 comments Read a bit more, and it seems ok. Think I'll persevere, after all it's a childrens' book, and I'm a child at heart (or is that second childhood!).

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Finished it & niece has returned home taking her book with her. She asked if I'd enjoyed it & I told her that it was OK but I didn't like Artemis at all. Apparently he improves over the rest of the books.
She then said " I enjoyed them when I read them - but I was younger then" (she is 16 :) )

Susan (susielily) | 469 comments Well, I thought I was over the hill when I hit 17!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I'm about to hit 46 and I'm still no-where near the top of the hill yet! Some day I suppose I'll grow up but no sign of it happening yet...

Susan (susielily) | 469 comments My daughter is more grown up than me.

message 75: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments i don't ever want to grow up

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.

Freddiesmum | 137 comments Been away for the last 10 days so missed reading here. I have this in my extensive to be read folder! so this will push me into reading it next. Looks like one I will enjoy.

Carl Ashmore (carlashmore) | 213 comments I read this some time ago and have to say I preferred the sequel.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I've read three of the Artemis Fowl books and have to say that I enjoyed them. I like books meant really for children as well as adult ones.
I read for entertainment and escape so I like fantasy novels.

message 83: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Finished this morning.Although this is a kid's book and not my usual genre for some reason I found I had to concentrate more than I usually would while reading it.I kept thinking I had missed some important detail especially during the rather too descriptive technical sequences then I would check back to find that I hadn't.
I will save the rest of my comments for one of the other threads in case they spoil the plot.

message 84: by Freddiesmum (new)

Freddiesmum | 137 comments Started this last night and so far I like it. I do enjoy fantasy though, so I am not surprised! Looking forward to getting stuck into it again tonight.

message 85: by Susan (new)

Susan (susielily) | 469 comments I'm really struggling with Artemis. Maybe my mind is on other things. I'm about a third of the way in so perhaps it's too early to make a judgment yet.

Freddiesmum | 137 comments Finished it last night and off to the other thread now! lol
