Late on the news but CONGRATS on your new relationship Kimberly!! Hope that his family will come to accept you and realize that they can't judge a religion based on encounters with like 2 other people from that religion.

I've found that happening to me too recently. I've also done the whole, in the midst of making a point, saying "I'm 24 years old...right? 24? Yeah. 24. I think..." Never thought I'd lose track.

message 1204: by Paul (last edited Feb 05, 2012 06:57PM) (new)

Paul | 18 comments Let me start by thinking everyone on my reconnecting with my keyboard. I like to think of that grace period a trial separation. At that time I believe I was in the search for a new computer, the key popping off was the computers way of saying "CHEATER!" So during my separation I looked for a new computer and was never satisfied, thus leading me to buy an iPad 2. The new found purchase told my computer that I realized I was making a mistake and wanted to rekindle our marriage. Ever since, WE have been happy as before. No more cheating for me!

Kimberly:
Made me feel a bit old

I feel the same way! Today, I was trying to think about what consumed my time in middle school all I could think about was that I was a trouble maker, and that only consumed part of my time. And I agree with Lori, I just turned 24 and I still cannot believe I am that old/young. Where has the time gone?

Kelly A.:
That scares me even more.

You know I have never lost anyone that I knew in high school, relatives yes, but not classmates. What are you scared about? You know, this reminds me of a part in a speech/song that gives advice to new students of Life. The speech/song is called the "Everyone is Free to Wear Sunscreen" by Baz Lurhman. The following phrase is part of the speech ...

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

The part I have bold is the part that hits me the most after reading your being scared the most line. Dying is something that will happen, it is apart of Life, but you should live your day to the fullest.

I like to amend quotes a lot to fit my lifestyle. I have recently accepted a quote that I found, always, to be very truthful, "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away". But, like I said, I like to amend quotes, so I have mended it to my life saying, "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of people we impact"

So, live your Life how ever you want to, whether it is to the fullest, the moments that take your breath away, or by the number of people you impact, how ever you want. Do not be scared of something that you cannot control, but take control over what you can control.

message 1205: by Paul (new)

Paul | 18 comments I want to say first, beautifully written!

To be not forgotten is to be able to impact someone, whether it be large or small. Every Tuesday and Thursday I go to a local nursing home and I see the same ninety-one year old man that has a growing case of Alzheimer's. Everyday I see this man, whether he remembers my name or not, he smiles and calls me his buddy. I know I made an impact on him because he remembers me, not my name but me, and enjoys talking to me. All I do for him is sit and listen to his tangible stories.

I believe that Acts of Kindness is the way to go when it comes to wanting someone to remember you. Every time you see your friends, whether it has been a long time or not, do something that touches their heart at that moment, it will carry on forever.

Acts of Kindness can be delivered in many different ways; gifts, cards, follow-ups of life events, advice, compliments (my favorite), or any other way you can think of. Pat attention to those Hallmark commercials, they might be corny but they are exact.

I understand that wanting to be close to people is very important. The one thing that I have learned with friendships is that no matter how long it has been since you have seen them, you will always pick up right where you left off.

I have a friend that is about three hours away from me and I rarely talk to him over the phone. We have known each other for a little over three years, we even graduated college on the same day, but every time we talk on the phone it seems as if we just got done eating dinner together.

(I have lost my train of thought so I will leave as is.)

message 1206: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker SBG, I know what you mean about not really being active in Goodreads any more. It makes me sad. Some of the friendships that began when I joined are still going, but mostly off of Goodreads. Others have faded out. I imagine they could be picked up like nothing happened. Still, I get where you're coming from about being sad. These people meant so much to me for so long and I felt much closer to them than to anyone from the real world. It's a strange dynamic. Like Paul, I lost my train of thought, so I'll stop babbling. Just remember: you're not alone.

Wow, these last 2 weeks have totally kicked my @$$. I had 72 hours 2 weeks ago then 66 last week at work. How on earth did I do this and go to school full time before?

I need some of your energy!

message 1209: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
What is this Energy you are talking about? :) I have none. I am trying to keep up on vitamins and eating good stuff only, but so far, doesn't seem to be helping much.

message 1210: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I have to echo Sashana's sentiments: You have much energy. Or much knowledge about how to get energy. How do you do it? I need to be putting in that much time on my thesis each week.

I constantly lose track of the fact that I'm 28 it just seems so strange to be so old. I had to stop telling people how old I am when I get carded because I always screw it up...."yeah I'm 26 few years older than the legal age, oh wait no I'm 27, oh geez I'm 28 now..." looks a little suspicious.

message 1212: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Definitely. Haha. It's so funny to lose track of your age.

message 1213: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Anna, I have to count to tell people how old I am. After 21 there really is no point in numbers. You are just as old as you feel. :)

Lori, I don't really have an energy needed job. Just need my mind to work. The problem with these long weeks/days is my brain starts to feel like mush! Can't complain when payday comes around though.

message 1214: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Tami, My work mostly requires my mind too--thesis, grading, working on editorials for the library--but I run out of steam and pretty much collapse each evening. I wish I had the fortitude to work 16 hours a day.

I find I do better the earlier I start. For some reason, I hit a mental wall around 5:00 P.M. I shouldn't still be at work! It doesn't bother me at 5:00 A.M. and I am the only one at work. :)

message 1218: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) alright kids I have good news and a questions. I was in a bit of a funk this morning so I did some serious retail therapy and bought myself a new macbook pro. I've been looking at it for a while so it wasn't completely out of the blue but until today I had decided to wait until I could save a little more money. Anyway I did it and I love my new computer but having such a pricey toy makes me a little nervous because I'm not always gentle/graceful and I really need this to last for several years. I plan to occasionally bring it to school and work and I have a bad habit of throwing my bag down a little too hard, and at work we keep all our stuff shoved in a tiny closet and things get smashed around frequently. Any tips on cases/sleeves or other protective things?

Total Random Bookish Moment:
The girls at my work had a 31 party. It is like Pampered Chef or Mary Kay or whatever, but it is bags & purses. Anyways, the lady that was the rep was talking about her love for the Muppets and how someone that did the music for the Muppets movie is going to be in Austenland and she was super excited to meet him. Why would she meet him, her sister is the author of Austenland. So Random!

message 1220: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments haha, Tami. That seems to happen with the Utah authors. That's an awesome bookish moment.

message 1221: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Wait... her sister is Shannon Hale? That's so awesome.

message 1222: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Anna, I have no idea about any of that. I have a neoprene sleeve for my laptop, which protects it from scratches, but probably not much else. I am, however, super jealous about your new Mac book!

message 1223: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I know what you're going through SBG. I am always glad to see it when you post here. I have become Facebook friends with several people I met on Goodreads. We also communicate via text and Twitter. I think we have a thread that tells people's Twitter handles. And I'm sure you could private message people you want to be Facebook friend with to ask for their information.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments An 'update'?

message 1225: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Maybe no one saw it? I know I never see updates from anyone, even book updates. I mostly am concerned with updates with the groups I belong too. (Mainly this one.)

message 1226: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I don't usually look at the update thread. I just go to the discussions.

Try sending personal messages. People definitely see those. I know I'd add you on Facebook if you requested it.

message 1227: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Same here! I'd definitely add you. :) The direct message is a good idea. I get so many notifications from this group that I miss half the notifications telling me someone commented on my profile, or on a review.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments My grandpa died almost 6 years ago, I've mentioned him before. Best man to walk the earth. Anyway, I knew that he'd recorded some of his history, but I didn't know how much. I decided to listen to the CDs finally. I just put the first one in. I'm absolutely delighted, he started them when he was 55. I know that he only recorded up to a few years before I was born, and I wish he'd continued but I'm looking forward to listening to these... I've only seen pictures Gramps that young, no video recording of course, but we have these tapes that he made... It was a bit emotional to hear his voice after all these years, but it's great hearing his stories again!

totally random and funny!

One of my really good friends has a brother that is in the Air Force. He was sent for training to Florida (either swampy land or jungle land or something) and wasn't pleased to be going because it would be so muggy! Well, the day he gets down there is when the tropical storm Debby hit! His mom is named Debby! He called her up and said something about her reach clear across the country!

Anyways, if any of you are in the storms path, stay safe!

I was wasting time on Pinterest the other day and saw a pin that said something about Books to Read after The Hunger Games, so I clicked on it. THEN noticed it was from Jamie's blog, The Perpetual Page-Turner! Threw me off, seeing something from someone I "know" on GoodReads somewhere else.

Melissa | 279 comments So I wasn't sure where to put this but could you all send thoughts and prayers to Colorado Springs. I don't know how many of you know but we are dealing with a huge fire that is about 9-10 miles from my house. 100 homes have been confirmed destroyed 5400 still in harm’s way and the evacuation borders get growing by the minute. There is no containment on this fire and it is moving fast and hot. 8000 acres burned since the fire started yesterday. It is very scary and sad.

I just saw that on the news. Big fires in Colorado, Utah, and California already. Scary stuff. Everyone stay safe.

message 1243: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments We are here in Colorado Springs, our fire grew a lot yesterday it went from 8,000 acres to 15,000 acres. 396 homes have been destroyed. We are getting some much needed rain right now that that is a huge blessing!!!

I am headed to Virginia tonight for my best friend from high school's wedding! I am excited even though I hate flying.

So, my dilemma: Do I just take my current read and maybe finish it and have nothing else, or do I take 2 or 3 and not read at all?

message 1245: by Merc (new)

Merc (oswinssouffle) Personally, I usually just take the one book. I mean, there are bookstores everywhere. If, for some reason, I was craving another book I could just buy another. But, that was my pre-kindle methods.

message 1246: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I don't enjoy my e-reader, much rather have the book in hand.

I just took the one and almost finished it so it wasn't an issue. Made a few enemies on the flight for keeping the light on though. :)

message 1247: by Merc (new)

Merc (oswinssouffle) Everyone seems to have an OKCUPID. I am so late that and I wouldn't have figured this out if people on Tumblr weren't also posting images and/or talking about it. I also thought my HS friends were just posting text messages but then it's like, what program shows age, sex, and all those other things at the informatio bar?

I am pretty certain that I am going to make one but I have zero clue what picture to use. The picture part is the hardest part of any social site.

I have only read 1 and it was so long ago, I don't really remember what the author of this article said made it so scary. Might be time for a reread.
