Tahleen Agreed. I barely got any financial aid, and have $70k+ in loans to pay back. And accruing more thanks to grad school.

Ray D (SonneMondSterne) thank you for your comments! and omg that's so much money! you kind of have to start your "real life" with already having depts? but aren't there such things as public universities?
the school system here is like this: you have to go to school between the age of 6 and 15. after that you can either go onto another school for 4 years to do your graduation or you can do an apprenticeship.
i'm will graduate next year and right at the moment i have 16 different classes and 14 are obligating (right at the moment i have german, english, french, maths, biology, chemistry, geography and economy, music history, piano, PE, art, religion, history, physics, psychology and philosophy and a extra biology class which i chose)
If you fail in more than 2 classes you have to repeat the WHOLE school year.
next year i will have to pass all these classes and afterwards do the "matura" a huge test about all of these 4 years. it contains 2 parts: 1.there are written exams where each takes 5 hours and you have to do them in maths, english, german and french or latin and then you have 5 oral exams where you can chose any subject you like.
but the thing is nobody cares if you only have A's or D's as long as you pass you're allowed to go to any university in austria. only if you study arts( an instrument, acting, etc.), medicine or media studies you have to make a acceptance test but that's only because many germans, swiss, italians,... come here to study those subjects (there are way to many people, often you aren't even able to sit somewhere because these lecture rooms are so overcrowded...) it gives you the opportunity to really think about what you want to do with your live and try some things out without worrying about money.

so my next question is what do you do if you haven't really cared about your education because you didn't know what you want to do after school and all of a sudden you know that you want to become a... i don't know... a doctor for example? but your marks were really bad and you don't have any money. is there still a possibility to get a scholarship?

message 953: by Ray (new)

Ray D (SonneMondSterne) omg i wrote pretty much... sorry ... =P

message 954: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Rachel- How can you manage 16 classes? That's crazy! I think I've only ever taken 6 or 7 classes in one term and that was enough!

Public universities generally don't cost as much as private universities but you still have to pay (unless you get a full scholarship). At public schools they usually have an in-state tution (which is less expensive) and out-of-state tution (which is more money).

In the US there are some states that require high school students to pass a standardized test before they can graduate or they have to pass a "senior project" (a huge project that you're supposed to start in your freshman year of high school and it continues until you graduate).

I think most people who didn't have good grades in high school but then decide they want to be a doctor go to a community college for a couple of years. As long as they did well in those classes they should be able to apply to another college and then eventually medical school.

message 955: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen But medical school does cost an arm and a leg, way more than college.

While I don't like that I have spent so much on school, and now have some student loan debt, I think I would rather do that then have to fight for a spot to sit during classes. That sounds horrible.

Random from last night:

A group of us went to the lake last night, and some of my friends that borrow my books and lend me theirs were there. One was currently reading the Necromancer. Another friend that listens to books (reads very seldomly) said that he thought it was the last of the series. He knew that the audio was almost over and kept thinking it had better hurry up so the story will be finished. Then, it ended and the story wasn't finished. He was confused. :)

Wow, another random from me.

We were headed down to Phoenix last Friday and stuck in the Dam Traffic (literally, the Hoover Dam, 2 hours and 42 minutes). Out of the blue, my sister asked me if I have ever heard of Goodreads. WHAT?! She was serious. Glad to know she actually listens when I talk. I have been talking about Goodreads for well over 2 years now, and she finally "heard" about it from a friend last week.

message 958: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments haha! That's hilarious Tami. Sounds like something my dad would do. I'll tell him something and then two weeks later he'll say something about it like it's completely new.

Adding to the humor, about two weeks ago, I was trying to get her daughter to sign up. She loves to read, and I noticed a bunch of childrens books going up in the giveaways, so that would be fun for her to enter for them and maybe win a free book. We talked about it for at least 10 minutes or so. Nice to know all she hears is Blah blah blah.

I feel ya there, it's so time-consuming. I wish I could deactivate mine as well....I only use it to talk to my brothers and two friends studying abroad.

I just realized I joined GoodReads in July about 2 years ago. So, I looked at my read books and I have 142 which means about 71 books a year. Except it probably is a bit more, I am not counting that I have re-read certain books, and the Harry Potters I think I may have actually read 3 times during that. :) Wow, no wonder everyone says I am always reading.

Make another account as family only. Then add him to that one.

message 965: by Haley (new)

Haley Having another facebook!
Thats so sneaky. Haha

message 966: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Anna, there used to be a way you could block certain people from seeing parts of your profile/wall/etc. But facebook is always changing things so I don't remember how to do it.

I think making a family only account would be easiest. Tell your cousin you want to keep your family life and personal life separate.

message 967: by Rav (last edited Jul 16, 2010 05:07PM) (new)

Rav (ravencat) Anna, you can change your privacy settings & block certain users from certain things like photos, status updates, your wall etc. I've done this myself as I have relatives who despise each other & I don't want to create any unnecessary drama.

I don't see a random book thread, so thought I would post here. What do you all consider to be a long book? I see 500 pages or more stated as being a long book, but there are a bunch of books over 500 that I have read that I wouldn't consider to be long.

message 969: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I think 500 is pretty long. But then again, I don't read many of them.

message 970: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments I'd say a long book would be one that is taking a while to read, whether cause of page number or slow parts of the book. Another thing to consider is font size and how big the pages are. I'm reading The Host and it's 619 pages long, with pretty small font. And the book is very tall hehe. I stayed up 2-3 hours longer than I was intending cause I got sucked in haha.

Need opinions. Add or don't add.

A guy I used to date a really long time ago added me as a friend on facebook. Long story short: His wife hates my sister (according to my sister, his wife hates everyone) and I don't know if she knows we used to date. So question, do I accept or ignore?

I would love to catch up but don't want to cause friction in his family.

message 972: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments I'd say to accept, and if his wife feels uncomfortable with it then you can either stop being friends on there or work it out with her. I don't get why it'd cause a problem. It's not like you're constantly calling him or texting him. Unless she's extremely jealous, I doubt she'd really care (but then again I don't have any experience in the subject haha).

message 973: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'd say add him.

message 974: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments I'd also say you add him, I don't think she'd be offended by you guys catching up and else as Richard said you can still unfriend him.

message 975: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Add him. Just because you're friends on Facebook doesn't mean that you actually have to have any contact with him on Facebook or in real life.

message 976: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Okay, it is a no go. I found out that it may have not been him that suggested the add, it may have been her. :) Oh the drama.

Also found out she is insanely jealous. She had a come apart once when my sister and her husband ran into them at the store. She thought he was having an affair with my sister. At the time, my sister was 8 months pregnant, and with her husband and 2 year old. Ummmm, yeah, okay she meets with her lover with her husband, kid and big ol pregnant belly somewhere when her lovers wife is with him? Ha, ha, ha.

Don't need the drama.

message 977: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments That's really weird.. I can see how she would picture your sister having an affair with a huge belly with a baby inside? You can hardly sneak around I'd say..

message 978: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Maybe it is just because I know my sister. She and her husband have been together since she was in 8th grade and he was in 9th. Oh, except for about 5 months once. They have been married now for 10 years, and my ex is so not her type at all.

One of my best friends husband used to deliver for the Coca Cola plant here. He brought some of the collector 6 packs for Christmas to our house once, and I happened to be on the phone with her when he dropped them off. She went balistic, saying he and I were having an affair. She is actually the one that asked him to deliver them. Found out she has some serious mental issues, and now has several meds to take when she feels she needs them. We all laugh about it now, but I am wondering if maybe his wife has some of the same issues.

Still, drama. I hate drama, unless it is on tv, and even then sometimes I just want to slap some sense into the person.

message 979: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Some people seem to live off it though.
Some of the people living in the same town my boyfriend grew up actually thought I was having some sort of affair with a guy from my boyfriend's soccer team. Who I only know because I'm with my boyfriend. And who I only see when we go to a party at that town. Together. And we're always in plain sight when we talk. Which is why I totally get that they'd think that. One even goes as far as to text him to leave me alone when we're talking now and I just want to slap her silly (as if she wasn't already) when that happens. My boyfriend even tells them he thinks it's great we're friends and still they make it into something dirty. Some people..

I agree, drama is good on tv and in books, but it's just not something I need myself.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I think a week. My hair is really long so it takes longer to look dirty .

message 981: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I think I have made it 4 days, but it was hard. I know you aren't supposed to wash it every day, but....I forget. In the shower, I have a routine and don't think about anything. Sometimes if I shower 2 or even 3 times a day, my hair is washed and my legs are shaved each time. Overkill, but habit. My hair is long too, but I am lucky, it air dries really fast, so I seldom need to use a dryer.

message 982: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Somewhere around 9 days...huge storm knocked our power out several years ago.

message 983: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I could never do that—my hair would get too greasy if I left it alone that long and it would look gross haha. I can leave it four days and it will be okay, I think the longest I've gone is probably around 5.

message 984: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I haven't washed my hair since Thursday night (because I never left the house yesterday) and it is so greasy already...I can't imagine two months!

message 985: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments I wash my hair almost every day, if I sleep on it, the ends of my fringe curl up (not in a good way) and my hair generally tries to bend itself in weird ways, so I have to wash it to get it in order again. Nothing else works.
I think the longest I've gone without washing it is a week when I was sick.

Okay, really random but related to the new challenge. I was playing around with the spinning globe to see how it worked, I hit the ocean 19 times before I hit land, and when I hit land, I hit Salt Lake City! Too funny that I hit the state I live in. I may bend the rule for the challenge and try again. After all, It is supposed to be Geography AWARENESS. I think I am perfectly aware of my state. :)

I thought you would find it funny Kimberly. Actually, it landed right off the top Northwest corner of the lake. So I am not exactly sure which town, but Salt Lake is close enough.

message 990: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments lol, that's like the most desolate area in Utah. There probably aren't even that many towns out in that area.

I really am a book geek. I find out that Barnes and Noble is going out of business and it depresses me. I need some ice cream...

message 991: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Kimberly, Maybe someone knows more than they are letting on with the press, but all the news is saying is that they are selling the business, not that they are closing it down. When a business goes up for sale it can take years for it to actually sale and finalize or whatever, so Have faith! Cross fingers and toes and whatever else you can cross! Oh, and have a huge triple scoop of something good.

message 992: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Good to know Tami! It makes me feel better. :)

message 993: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Kimberly, Tami's right, we're not going out of business, and honestly I don't think we will for a long time. They're just selling it, which could be good or bad. We'll see; it depends on who buys it!

message 994: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I was telling a really close family friend about the apartment I am going to be renting and found out that she rented an apartment in the same building for a summer while she was in school. She is currently about 74 so that was 50 years ago. Small world. She remembers having to tap her food while studying to keep mice away so hopefully that little problem has been fixed in the past decades.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But in all honesty, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I didn't get much of a summer, and I was rather enjoying lazing around the house with my boyfriend all day. Hmm.

message 997: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I am loving some of the required materials for my classes. My physiological psych class requires The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales, a book I had on my TBR list, my personality theory class requires a coloring book, and my visual communication class requires crayons/colored pencils. I feel like I'm in elementary school! :)

message 998: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) That sounds like a blast Kelly!
So as many of you now I am moving a about 3 weeks and am currently trying to furnished my apartment because all I have now is a bedroom. I bought a couch at a yard sale the other day for 10 bucks but when it came time to pick it up realized it is way too heavy (my brother and I barely managed to get it from the driveway to garage) and since I am moving to the 4th floor it doesn't really seem like the best idea, something I probably should have thought about before I suppose. Anyway back to my point, I was looking at Ikea and I think I want a nice new couch. I think I want a nice new everything, which is a bit of a problem. It is especially frustrating because I am terrible at saving money so even though I have had very little overhead the past 3 years and I've been working full time I have very little to show for it but if I had been more responsible I could have enough to buy everything I want.

So, today I went home for lunch. Was ready to leave to go back to work, and someone knocked on the front door: A Salesman! The wierdest door to door salesman I have encountered. He was selling Funeral Plans. :) I must look like I am ready to kick the bucket.

message 1000: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I managed to get myself into a bit of a difficult situation. I was driving homme from campus when a tiny little dog ran out into the road. I stopped and picked her up to get her out of the road. Unfortunately when I set her down on the sidewalk she just followed me across the street, and sat up for me to pick her up. I sat in my car with her trying to call animal control or something and she fell asleep in my lap. So it looks like she's spending the night at my house until I can take her to the No Kill Animal Shelter tomorrow.

She's obviously a pet. She's friendly, clean, her teeth are clean and she has a collar with no tags. I just really hope that they find her owners. I'll bet they are so worried about her.
