Anna Shumaker (annashu) Thats so great Paula, I love when little things like that can change the whole tempo of a day.

message 902: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) work was brutal for me this past weekend but I live across from an elementary school and they just started pee-wee t-ball practice. Every night on my walk home I get to watch little kids learn the finer points of baseball and it just makes my day. What makes it even better is that a lot of the dads/coaches are locals and I feed most of them lunch every day.

My nephew just started tee ball. There is no better entertainment. I love baseball, and the kids are so funny. Between the ones that take off their mitts and play in the dirt, to the ones that run funny (my nephews specialty) to the ones that don't run and there ends up two or more on the same base. Classic entertainment, and it is impossible not to have a smile on your face.

message 904: by Paula (new)

Paula | 101 comments There is a tee ball team that plays at a park near by, when I go walk my dog, I have to stop and watch. So cute!

When I was little my parents put me on a tee ball team. I was that kid that spun in circles in the outfield.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments My younger cousins have started playing soccer, Baylie is 11 and her brother Devon is 8. Baylie, the poor thing, is just like I was at that age. We look like sisters. She is 5'2 and skinny. She hasn't learned how to use all of her limbs yet and usually manages to trip over the ball, kick it backwards or trip over her own feet. lol. She's getting a lot better though. I love watching the kids play. When Devon plays it's even better, the kids are younger and understand even less. I laugh every time I see a kid try to go the wrong way, or sits down to play with the grass.

My mom's sister and brother are always reading and they lend me books sometimes. I am not usually too impressed with them, but sometimes they are good.

My aunt lives about 4 hours away, and they came down Easter weekend, so I thought I would lend her some books. She called yesterday to ask about another aunt that was having surgery, and told me The Boy in the Striped Pajamas made her cry. I love that she liked it.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments So I'm kinda sad. I had planned visiting my friend this summer. She got married in December and moved to California. Her husband is in the Air Force and is stationed out there. I haven't seen her since the wedding, which may not seem all that long but we've known each other since we were seven and we lived less than a mile apart from each other. So this was a big adjustment. But in June her husband is being transferred to Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls Montana, much closer. I had planned on flying out there to visit for a weekend. I never realized how expensive it was! $450 was the minimum price. I was hoping to find a better deal. But I'm not planning to visit until August so that gives me some time to plan. :) If any of you know of good places to check for good deals on airfare, let me know!

message 908: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) that is crazy expensive, I really like planning pretend trips so I looked into it. I had you going from SLC to Grand Falls (GTF) and sure enough flights were about 500 but flights elsewhere seem about right (it would be much cheaper for you to visit them in CA). The issue appears to be in GTF because flights to/from SLC seem average but to/from GTF (and most of MT) are outrageous. I know that doesn't really help but maybe if there is some temporary thing going on in MT flights will go down soon.

message 909: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Thanks for looking into that for me, Annashu. :) I think the main problem is that Great Falls is such a small airport.

message 910: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I think that is probably true, I was thinking that maybe since MT is so big and sparsely populated that all the airports are fairly small.

message 911: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) A while ago I posted that I might be going to Italy, tonight my mom and I talked about it and we decided to wait a year. We were going to go with some friends of hers but the timing really wasn't right so I would only have been able to go for about a week and it really didn't make sense considering the cost of airfare (almost $1,900). But we are going to start planning for next year!

A question for those that have been out of highschool for a few years at least. Have you seen someone (or pictures of this someone) that you haven't seen since school and think What the heck happened?

Just was facebook added by an old friend whose profile pic looked just like I remembered, but the current family pic, are you sure that is you? :) So funny.

message 914: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments haha Tami, yes I've been thinking that. A few people I probably wouldn't even realize it was them if it weren't for their old photos. Some people have either really let themselves go, or have really grown up. I've been out of high school for 3 years, and I still get surprised when someone I use to know fairly well has gotten married, and already has kids.

message 915: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I just found my childhood best friend from when I lived in California on Facebook. I moved away when I was 6 and I've only seen her once after that, and that was 10 years ago. She lives in Germany now, me in Florida and we are both in college. It was so nice to find her! And apparently her older brother, whom I was friends with too, is a semi-famous country singer in Nashville! lol! :)

message 916: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments That's so exciting Kelly!
One of these days I think I'm going to get out my yearbooks from elementary school and look up the people who moved away. I can remember people's first names but not their last name.

message 917: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments Haha, okay, so something really random happened today. I'm going to move in with a friend in a few weeks, so I'm currently trying to figure out how to decorate my room. I went out today to dispatch some letters - just a five-minute walk, really - and when I got back to my apartment house, someone had left a baobab in front of the front door. I went up to my flat, grabbed my mother to take a look at the plant with me, walked down again, tried to figure out if someone was meaning to take it up again... and then took it and off I went :) Now the baobab is happily (or so I like to imagine) sitting in the bathroom, drying off. I love it already :) It's pretty huge, and I've always been fond of baobabs since I grew one from tiny (when I got it in first grade) to huge myself. :D

Lynnie I just wanted to stop by and say how much I miss reading!!! Things are so crazy here w/ graduation coming up that I just don't have time to read or get on GR or anything. This summer that will change!! :]

Kelly A. | 499 comments Have any of you ever made a bucket list?
I am currently working on one. I'm only up to about number 40 right now, but I am getting excited just thinking about doing a few of these things!

message 921: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I thought about it, maybe even started one but then it occurred to me that I really just want to do everything. I also have a "1000 places to see before you die" book and tried marking all the ones I especially wanted to see but I stopped when I realized every page was marked.

message 923: by Lynnie (new)

My college career is almost over!! :'[

I'm on the verge of freaking out.

Lynn--I had that feeling when I graduated..it's such a weird feeling! I would come back to school (because I live close and my bf played on the bbball team there) for bball games and I would feel so weird and out of place. It's even worse now. It's just such a weird feeling because you are soo used to living that life and now it's gone.

message 925: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) my public library posted this as their facebook status for the day and thought I should share:
"When you are growing up there are two institutional places that affect you most
powerfully: the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which
belongs to you."

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, quoted in his autobiography "Life", in which he confesses his secret longing to be a librarian.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Annashu-I love that quote!

As a random comment, I love working with all guys. They are so easy going, they don’t get in petty fights like women do. And they never fail to make me laugh, one of them just walked past my desk and belched. Lol. Which may sound disgusting, but it’s just hilarious. One of the guys in the building bought roses for all the women in the building for mother’s day, even if they aren't moms. :) I feel so special!

message 927: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Kimberly that is great. One time a coworker bought all the women a rose for Valentines day. He says that is his holiday. :) He is older and it probably could have been a bit creepy but it wasn't.

Take note boys, flowers are not pointless. :)

K, just saw something online that really shocked me. Shouldn't have but did, and this seemed like the best place to post.

Heidi Montag says her F-Cup breast enlargement isn't big enough! WHAT?! You have got to be kidding me. What do you all think about plastic surgery? Do you think it is okay in moderation? What about this excessiveness? (is that a word?)

message 929: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Seriously?! I can't imagine that would be comfortable, at all. I've never really understood peoples need to have plastic surgery, it just seems so... unnecessary I guess. And I’m not exactly fond of needles, I’m not going to have surgery when I don’t need it!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
She'll be begging them to take them out once she starts having back pains lol. F-cup..really?! How unfortunate..she was a really cute girl naturally. Now she is going to turn into some crazy looking freak. Hasn't she seen enough people in Hollywood who have gone heavy on the plastic surgery..or watch that show about people who have had like hundreds of plastic surgery procedures and that look legitimately monster-like?!?

Complete randomness: While going through the giveaways over this last week or so, I had two wow moments.

First, I was reading the little blurb about one of the books, and thought this sounds slightly familiar, and then I looked at the authors name and it is someone I grew up with. :) Now I am going to have to get a book, even though it really isn't something I normally would read.

Second, a coworker had a girlfriend she grew up with that wrote a book. The only reason I knew is because she doesn't really read, but had this book with her for one of our weekend trips to Vegas. Anyways, it's there too! Recognized the cover.

Talk about a small world.

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just cleaned out my junk closet. It is where I just threw a bunch of boxes that I didn't feel like unpacking when I moved back home in 2007. Well I finally sorted through them and it was like a blast from the past, kinda fun and scary at the same time. Among other things I found a box of school notebooks from the last year or so of school and I just couldn't bring myself to throw them away.

My bookshelves went crazy yesterday, the listed all my books as read! Then I finally got most of them back to where they should be but there are about 100 or so that should be in the 1001 books to read that show that shelf but are showing up in the list of books read. Can't figure it out, but found a way to fix. It is causing me to change status on a lot of books, so for those of you that have a email alert for updates, I am so sorry! :) Hopefully, I can get it all fixed up today.

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Have you tried to talk with them about why you support it, and discuss their issues against it? I think that if they are so set against it, especially if they understand all the points, then there is usually a reason. It is hard to please both your parents and yourself. Good Luck!

message 939: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I think you would be happier if you explained it to your parents. If it means a lot to you, you should do it but having your parents understand makes everything easier. Even if they don't agree with you, but understand why you are doing it, it will help. Personally I don't think we're ever too old to listen to our parents, as adults we need to learn to listen to them but not let them make decisions for us. I hope it works out! Good luck!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I'm in agreement with Tami and Kimberly. I feel like even though they don't make our decisions for us, you will feel more at peace if you at least try to discuss what they don't agree with and why you agree with it.

message 941: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Anna, I think that you've done all you can in talking to them. Now you have to decide how important it is to you to participate. There comes a time for all of us when we have to decide whether it's more important to play it safe, play by our parents' rules or do what we think is right.

message 942: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Agreed! You tried to talk with them about it but if they aren't going to agree that you should do it then that's when you have to decide what's best for you.

message 947: by Ray (new)

Ray D (SonneMondSterne) hey! i live in vienna, austria, i'm 18 and will graduate next year. in austria you don't have to pay anything to go to university or college or what so ever. the government even supports you by giving you money so you can fully concentrate on studying. and i was wondering if i could go a year to usa because the universities are bigger and better than here and i was really shocked when i saw how much it costs.
Do you approve with this system? because it seems like poor people have almost no opportunity to get a higher education.

sorry if i make any mistakes but i can only draw on my school english and i hope you get what i'm trying to say.. ^^

message 948: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Rachel I can say with complete confidence that it is terrible to have to pay so much for college. I will be paying it back for years. I did love college though.

message 949: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I agree that the cost of college it awful, but there are a variety of scholarships, grants and loans that make college possible for anyone who wants to put forth the effort to obtain any of those. It isn't always easy to afford college but in theory the effort pays off. I don't have any experience with foreign university systems though so I can't really say if paying for schooling is better than free schooling.

message 950: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I really wish that I didn't have to pay for college, but it's worth it. The experience of being in college, and the fact that I'll get a better job and be able to pay back all of the money I spent on college makes it worth it.

And it actually isn't the poor people that have a difficult time going to college. The less money you have the more likely you are to get a grant or scholarship. It's the middle class that has a rough time.
