Something that struck me Insanely Funny!

Details magazine has Robert Pattinson on the cover with the caption "The Remasculation of the American Man Starring Robert Pattison."

Think someone should tell the magazine he is actually from London?

Matthew and that he's emasculating

I was overlooking that part, but yes, that is funny too!

Anna Shumaker (annashu) There was an earthquake in Chile today, which leads to a tsunami warning on the pacific coast. It's funny cause I always know I should take this seriously but really I have no idea what to do. We get a lot of warnings but nothing has happened for over 20 years, it is at yellow right now but I have to go to work and if it changes I won't be able to get back home. Maybe I'll just take my Kindle just in case...
Edit: I guess we are just expecting strong currents and slightly elevated tides

There was one in Japan too, but no real damage. But the one in Chile looks tons worse. Hopefully everything will be fine for you Annashu.

message 858: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) We are fine after I got to work and actually listened to the news I realized that my previous post was perhaps a little self-centered. I really am concerned about disasters elsewhere, and am sympathetic to those they happen to, except that in moments of possible crisis I think about myself first.

Jessica | 143 comments Holy hell. I haven't been here in a while and this group is crazy big now! How awesome!

message 860: by R (new)

R (feste) Yeah. It's quite sad that a lot of languages are dying out, because English is more or less the international lingua franca and some local languages just aren't as important anymore. I was looking at the lists of endangered languages on Wikipedia, just the other day. There are a number of languages with just one speaker left in the entire world!

message 861: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I joined an online dating site not too long ago and I've been messaging back and forth with this guy and we are planning to meet for lunch later this week. Don't exactly think that he is "the one" or anything but I think it is good to be out there again.

Hope it goes well! I've been so out of the "dating" scene for so long because I've been with my bf for over 3 years. I don't think I'd know how to go on dates and stuff anymore! lol

message 863: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've been out of the scene for close to 4 years mostly out of laziness and a little cowardice.

Haha..I know what you mean about laziness. It's so much effort! Let us know how it goes! Just be your wonderful self and you will be good to go!

WTF. So can I express my disgust with Kate Gosselin? lol I was flipping through channels and she was on The View and I didn't even recognize her. And I saw that she is going to be on Dancing with the Stars. I mean, she looks good these days but reallyyy I thought she would go away after a while. UGH. My friend used to babysit for them before the show happened and said she was such a BITCH in real life.

message 866: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I love not having cable because I don't have to experience any of that...I even had to google her because while the name was a little familiar I had no idea.

I used to watch John and Kate plus 8, but I couldn't stand the way she was. OCD and such a bitch. It really was no shocker that they split up. BUT.... I find it funny that she is the more stable now that they are divorced. Not that that is saying much.....

Haha good point! I really thought we'd see her running amok with a meltdown the size of Texas!

message 869: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I went on my date and it was better than I expected. The guy was nice and it wasn't too awkward. Don't exactly know if I would go out with him again because he isn't really my type but it was fun to get dolled up and meet someone new. It was also my first real date ever so I think considering that it went really well.

message 870: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm glad you had fun! Where did he take you?

message 871: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Just to a pub type restaurant for a burger and a beer, nothing too exciting.

Sounds like a good date to me! I like a first date when you can talk but it's in an atmosphere where it's not too quiet..like a fancy restaurant or something. I like background noise.

I'm glad that it went well. I mean, even if you don't like him, it was a chance to get back out there and feel confident again in the dating scene!

April Fools! I didn't want to start a new thread for just a few comments, but I wanted to see if anyone pulled off some good pranks yesterday? Have some good ones you were on the receiving end of? Best ones from the past?

My favorite I have from the past is my uncle worked the same place as my dad. My mom's due date was April 18th, and my uncle told my dad about half way through the morning that my mom called, she was in labor, and at the hospital.

He worked in a factory type setting, so he cleaned everything up really quick and clocked out and left. Then my mom showed up to his work with lunch and my uncle just told her he wasn't there.

It is a good thing my dad doesn't have anger issues. :) My mom on the other hand......

message 874: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments The best one I saw all day was by a friend of mine on Facebook. She and her boyfriend have been together since she was a freshman in high school (almost six years), and she changed her status from "In a Relationship" to "Single" and all her friends FREAKED out. Everybody bought it and was very sympathetic....until this morning when she changed it back to "In a Relationship." It was a pretty good prank.

message 875: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) my friends always try to pull facebook pranks. This year I think the winner goes to a friend who posted that she pre-applied to nurse school in Alaska and if she is accepted her schooling would be paid for.

So fun!

Kelly, I had a friend that really has never dated, and she has had a steady boyfriend for about 6 months now. She changed her photo on facebook to her hand with a huge ring on that all important finger. NOONE picked up on the April Fools thing until about 4 that afternoon.

message 877: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I have long hair, it comes down almost to the middle of my back. On facebook I posted that I'd chopped it off. Half of my facebook friends freaked out, the other half didn't believe me. So not very successful, but the ones that believed me were fun.

My dad had a good prank a several years ago. He worked for a small company, only about 10 or so employees. One of the employees, Bev, had just bought land and was building a house. The area she was building it in was pretty rural at the time, and was pretty close to the lake. My dad and another of the workers, Zeke, got a hold of one of the letters that the company that was building her house had sent her. They used the copy machine to copy the letter head and typed up a new letter. In it they said that because of the water levels in the area that Bev was building they would need to build the house on stilts. They put a bunch of stuff in there and made it sound really official. They sent it to her and just waited. I guess they knew when she opened the letter because she started yelling. Ten minutes later she was on the phone demanding to know why she hadn't be told ahead of time that her house would need to be built on stilts. lol. I guess the person she was talking to just started laughing. The story ended up in the newspaper.

This story is my favorite from this year.

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Awesome Anna! I had a friend who would write little things like that on all the matchbooks at a bar. It would be really funny when someone would get one who didn't know who had done it.

Kimberly, those are all great. I love pranks. Stilts? Priceless. Oh, and I saw the brick wall on the news that night.

Have you ever noticed how wierd life is?

First, this last weekend, we had 83 people come to the Easter celebration (a HUGE bbq and egg hunt and pretty much camping without the spend the night part). My Great Aunt came from california that is 92, her sister who is the baby (I think she is 78) and her daughter and son. So, we see my 91 year old aunt and how good she is doing in some aspects and how bad in others.

Then, we hear about the earthquake in Northern Mexico and the visiting cousin (the son) his wife is in San Diego visiting her children. Luckily by the time they got ahold of her on the phone, she had almost made it back to Riverside, so she hadn't been affected.

Then this morning, I hear about a friend from high school who has passed away from surgery complications. She is so young, and has 4 little ones. How sad! How crazy! Life and its random events.

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I feel like I haven't been on goodreads in forever! I broke up with my boyfriend of 7 years so that took quite a toll on my life. It's good to be back!
I love when people leave notes in random places =)

I wrote this on another thread that you were in..but I'm glad to see you are back!!! We have definitely missed you! I am so sorry to hear that news. :(

message 885: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I've missed you guys too! Yeah, it was just something that needed to happen and I think I was just putting it off because of a sense of loyalty or something...but I figured it would probably be best if two people in a relationship actually WANTED to be in that relationship. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to either one of us. But life goes on.

Wow, good for you for doing that though. It sucks but, I mean, I've seen people who don't end it when they should and it just falls apart in a very destructive way. I can't imagine though. I mean I've only been dating my bf for a little over 3 years and I feel like I would have a hell of a hard time with that..so I can't imagine 7 years! Well, if you ever need to talk about it, you know where to come! :)

I have a question. A girl from high school passed away (brain tumor) and the funeral is this Saturday. I was friendly with her, but not great friends. I was more of a friend to her husband, but still not close. It seems a huge portion of our graduating class is going but I don't know if I should (and I know I don't really want to) Anyone have any opinions?

I am having a bunch of friends from high school asking if I am going, so I probably will, but it sucks. Especially since she has kids. I couldn't imagine being without my mom, especially when I was so young. Makes me very thankful mine is still around, even though she drives me insane sometimes. A strange twist, I know her parents from work. I didn't realize they were her parents until recently.

message 892: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) ugh I just got my jury summons and I really don't want to do it, our court is about 20 minutes away and I don't drive so I'd have to take the bus plus I need to work and don't want to spend my days off doing lame things like jury duty. Anyone have good excuses for getting out of it?

message 893: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Any family members that you need to take care of? I know that you can use that as an excuse.

message 894: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Can you tell them that missing work could cause you to have finanical problems? You may count on making a certain amount of money each week to go towards rent, student loans, insurance, etc.

message 895: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments I'd say tell them you're out of town, but from my experiance they just get you again in a few months. It really sucks!

message 896: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I am thinking about saying that I am planning to go back to school and am counting on saving a certain amount each pay period.

message 897: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) You can postpone those for reasons like school. That's what I did last year, I postponed it for the Summer, and so many other people had done the same that they had too many people! I never even had to go to the court, I just had to call once a day for a week to see if they needed me and they never did. I don't know if its the same everywhere, but I would try it!

message 898: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Annashu! That is too funny because I just got my jury summons too! I have to report on my first freaking day of summer vacation! I guess I'll have plenty of time to sit back and read but that was totally not what I was planning on doing that week. One silver lining that my mother pointed out was that, at least our county, pays $25 or $35 a day. Good luck with getting out of it though; I can see how it'd be a huge inconvenience.

My sister is a court clerk, and her husband is a Deputy Sheriff. She has been called 3 times (within a year and a half time period), and all 3 she still had to show up, wait for them to call her, then be dismissed. She told them it would happen but each time she still had to go. One time it was on Valentines Day and she actually worked at a florist then. Their busiest day and they were down one worker. She sat their for about 2 hours, got called in, they found out her husband worked for the Sheriff and dismissed her. The other two she was dismissed for her job and her husbands job.

Our courts really don't care if you have work. They pay a small amount, and feel that suffices in compensation for missing work. You have to either have prior knowledge of either party, or some type of conviction, religious belief, etc. that one or both of the lawyers decide would be detrimental to their case to be excused.

message 900: by Paula (new)

Paula | 101 comments So this is random, but I'm at work right now, filing things. Usually really bland work. But right now there is a guy in the lobby playing piano absolutely fantastically. He's been here for the past hour or so, and it's really making my work super enjoyable. I can't go tell him right now. Hopefully he'll still be there in a few hours so I can let him know he brightened my day. But I had to share it somewhere.
