Tahleen The buy 2 get 1 b&n sale goes until 1/28.

message 802: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I've decided I'm going to do the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure in Boston this year. Anyone want to join?

message 803: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I would but I can't get there. When is it? Are you going to support those in it, or are you going to participate?

message 804: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Tahleen, that is awesome. My mom did one in Seattle area for several years when I was younger and always came home with great stories, I always wanted to participate but was too young at the time. Don't know if you need ideas for fund raising but we would always do a yard sale asking friends for donations for the sale.

message 805: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Oh that is a good idea! Maybe I'll do that when the weather gets warmer. Thanks Annashu!

message 806: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie How 'bout them Cats, yall?? UK is 18-0!! :]

message 807: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Okay so here is my first attempt at fundraising: I'm going to ask here if anyone is willing to donate! I have to raise $2,300 at minimum. Any donation at all would be appreciated, plus it's tax deductible (the organization will send you a receipt in your email). If you'd like to donate, here's the link to my page: http://www.the3day.org/site/TR/2010/B...

I'd love to. I'll have to wait a couple days though, I just paid for tuition and registration for my car in the same day. :-P When does it end?

message 810: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Haha, Kimberly, it doesn't! Someone really should try to invent some sort of money tree.

message 811: by Tahleen (new)

I'd love to! Let me see what my finances look like after I pay my credit card bill off..I'm unemployed so it won't be much! :( Good luck!!

message 813: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Anything will help, so don't worry about the amount--whatever you are able to give will help. Thank you!

message 814: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Anyone else "stumble"? well I stumbled upon this and thought it was good enough to share.

"When I was five years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "happy". They told me I didn't understand the assignment and I told them they didn't understand life."

message 815: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Annashu, that is great. So often adults don't understand things the same way kids do.

Tahleen, when does you fund raising end? When is the walk?

message 816: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen The fundraising ends at the time of the walk, I'm pretty sure, but that's not until July 23. I have plenty of time, but I wanted to start raising the money early so I can raise as much as I can. I think I'm going to do a bake sale/book sale type thing in the spring time to raise more money.

message 817: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Okay, so I'm sitting here in my second graduate class ever... half an hour early. With like four other people who are also early. Everyone is super quiet and it is awkwaaarrdddd. Well it could be worse I guess, but it is uncomfortably silent. The kind of silent where if you make a noise you get embarrassed.

message 819: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Tahleen, Wow! I just checked your donations! You are 1/3 of the way there. You are going to have to raise your goal amount. :)

I like that idea for fund raising, a used book sale.

You could post fliers asking for donations from the community for used books. I am not sure if your work would allow it, but what better place to advertise then a book store. I could probably send a few.

Most people have a couple of books they bought, read, but don't plan on ever reading again.

message 820: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Thanks Tami! Yeah, I was surprised at the amounts people were giving me. I'm glad you think the used book sale is a good idea--I have to see if I need to get a permit or anything. I don't want to do anything illegal while raising money haha. And don't worry about sending me books for the sale--I know you're in Utah and that is a long way away, it would probably cost a lot to send them to Mass. Thank you so much though!

And I think I might eventually raise my goal to $3k, but I'm going to wait a little just in case.

message 825: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen She commented on my blog not too long ago... I don't think she said anything about her not being on here anymore though. I'll double check.

message 826: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I sat next to this guy in class today, and he looked at me and said "Oh I know you! You're that girl that I always see reading a book!" Haha. I guess there are worse ways to be recognized :)

message 827: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Hi everyone. So, I checked my blog and Roisu didn't say anything about Goodreads... and I haven't heard from her since. :( I don't know what happened to her.

In happier news, I am almost halfway to my initial goal for the 3-Day walk! I've raised more than $1,000 now, and I'm getting more and more excited about it. I went to my first meeting-type thing last night for it, where I met a lot of nice people who were giving me tips and one asked if I wanted to join her team, which was great. (Anyone in the Boston area, if you'd like to start a team and join me on the walk let me know!) I've also been thinking about more fundraising ideas, and I think I'm going to make a T-shirt and walk through my town with donation forms and ask local businesses if they'd like to donate. When it gets warmer and we don't have a foot of snow on the ground.

Hahah that is hilarious!

Tahleen--I'm so sad that she just disappeared! :( I hope everything is ok with her.

I'm so happy that you are already that far in your goal! What you are doing is awesome! Oh, and also, what is the link to donate again? I don't remember what thread it was in.

message 829: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Jamie, it's in this thread. http://www.the3day.org/site/TR/2010/B...

I hope Roisu is ok. :(

where was Roisu from? I can't remember. But I know that there are several countries right now, mainly China but there are others, that are fighting internet issues with access to certain sights. Maybe she lives in one of them. I hope that is all it is. Hope she is okay.

Tahleen, that is awesome! We went to a fund raiser last week called "Death by Chocolate". It would be a good one if you could get a few people together to do it. They had all sorts of deserts (mostly chocolate) and a chocolate fountain, then finger foods. They invited a bunch of people through the sphere of influence (it was a bunch of realtors) and they had a silent auction and had a bunch of items for a raffle. You bought the tickets, put your name and phone number on them, then dropped them into the basket for the items you were interested in. They ended up raising enough for a full cycle medical treatment for the little guy. The auction and raffle items were small as a childs baseball bat and ball clear up to a Playstation with 3 games and some acessories.

message 833: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Tami, I'd love to do something like that! The only thing I'm worried about is the venue. I think I want to start/join a team, it would be easier than doing it all by myself, but I think I'd be able to do it alone too.

message 836: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Tami wrote: "Tahleen, Did they raise your goal since you were doing so good at the fundraising?"

Yeah, I raised it to $3,000. I'm at $1,115 right now!

message 837: by Tami (new)

oh, okay, you raised it. I was thinking they were being pretty sneaky! :) Congrats on that amount so far. You are doing great!

message 838: by Adriana (last edited Feb 11, 2010 10:08AM) (new)

Adriana | 188 comments So, I received a call this morning from my sister telling me that she had the baby this morning at around 6:25am. I was so happy for her, but then I got another call from my uncle telling me that my grandfather had passed away late last night. Practically everyone is heading to Mexico for the funeral, but my family is staying behind. We haven't even told my sister yet. This sucks. How can I be happy, sad, and angry all at the same time?

message 839: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I am sorry about your grandfather and excited for you having a new nephew/neice. It is too bad it all happened at the same time though.

message 840: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 188 comments Thanks. It's a girl, 2nd neice. It does suck having it all happend at the same time. One minute I was happy and the next I was sad/crying. what sucks the most is that I'm not able to go to the funeral since its in Mexico.

message 841: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen :( I'm sorry for your loss Adriana, but I'm happy for your new niece.

message 843: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Does anyone else have issues being the 3rd wheel? Sometimes it doesn't bother me too bad, but last night at the bar it really did. My friends are married which is awesome, but it leaves me feeling like the odd man out.

message 844: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I've been feeling like that sometimes. My best friend is married now and I've always been close with them. I mean, I have a boyfriend but he is 45 minutes away so I end up hanging out with them sometimes. It's not too bad..but I really don't like being a third wheel. I mean, at least they aren't one of those uber PDA couples.

message 845: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Well, my thing with that guy is over... apparently I'm not religious enough for him. Oh well! I don't think either of us would have been happy in the relationship, we were just too different.

At least you figured that out earlier rather than later.

message 847: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Yes! I'm glad for that. At least I got a free dinner out of it? And a good friend, at least I think so.

Free dinner is always good! And sometimes I ended up with a good friend out of a bad "romance" attempt. It can be a good thing!

message 849: by Kimberly (new)
