My stepdad said he would buy me a Kindle for Christmas if I wanted it. I really want it because I love the idea. However, I'm the type of person that I like getting books for cheap at used bookstores or online and after I've read them I like to put them on Paperbackswap unless they are my absolute favorite and I'll read them again. That is the only reason I do not want a Kindle..I don't want to have to buy books that I might not really like and then they are just there and I can't swap them out!

Someone..advise me! lol

message 752: by Matthew (new)

Matthew I for one could not forgo the feeling of a book in my hands

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
That's how I feel. The only reason I'd want one is that it would be nice for vacations so that I wouldn't have to bring a huge stack of books. I mean, I always have a book in my purse, so I feel like I'd only use it when I'm going away. I'm not sure if that justifies getting one.

message 754: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Well, that would be the purpose of gifts; things you can't justify owning. "Don't blame me! My stepdad got it for me."

You make a very good point! Haha

message 756: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Having a Kindle is super nice for traveling and I also use it a lot for books I am a little questionable about because if I don't like it I won't be taking up any space on my shelf. I do miss being able to share books though, I always feel guilty when telling a friend about a great book but being unable to loan it out because it was on my Kindle. Also as Matthew said you don't need to justify a gift...they are supposed to be frivolous and not completely necessary.

message 757: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Jamie, you should get nook instead... lol. Though they aren't shipping out until Feb 1 now. But they are a little different and you can get around 500,000 books for free (anything on Google books). (Can you tell I've been trying to sell these for a while now?)

message 758: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) On the Nook you can actually share books with people right? And you can download books from a variety of sellers? I also feel guilty for buying books from Amazon instead of independent bookstores

message 759: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen You can't download them from a variety of sellers, only bn.com. You can lend a book out for two weeks though, but only once.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Ok, so I could use some advice. My car is starting to get old. Well ok, it’s been old for a while now but it’s really starting to show its age. It’s a 95 Mercury Tracer. I’ve had it since I was in high school, and it was my parents’ car before that. It’s been a good car for the most part; it’s also really comfortable to drive. But it’s almost useless in the snow, and I’m having to spend more and more money on it to keep it running. My aunt is going to be selling her car and I might be able to buy it from her. It’s a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe. She is only going to be asking 5,000 for it. She takes really good care of her cars so it’s still in excellent shape. I’m nervous about it though, it’s not as comfortable as my car. And it worries me to invest money in something that I’m not totally sure about. But I’ll probably never find a better deal than this. So… I’m not sure what to do. Any thoughts?

message 761: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Oh and one other question. She smokes in her car... Do any of you know some genius way to get the smell out?

message 762: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Kimberly, coming from someone who has had endless problems with cars, I think it'd be best to go for the newer car. At this point, your car is 15 years old and like you said you're putting more and more money into it to keep it running. $5000 seems like a really good deal for a 2004. I think the money you'd be saving over the next few years would make it worth it if your aunt has taken as good care of it as you've said. I don't really know of any ways to get the smoke smell out other than driving around with the windows down to air it out and putting an air freshener in it.
I do understand the attachment to your first car though. Mine was a terrible piece of crap 95 ford taurus that gave me so many problems (ridiculous ones that you wouldn't even think of) but it was my grandma's car before she passed away. As much as I hated the car, there was so much sentimental value in it. My brother ended up driving it into a parked car and totaling it so I had to get a new one... but that's another story!
Whatever you decide to do with it, good luck! Cars are a giant headache.

message 763: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Maybe you could use Febreeze for the smoke smell?

message 764: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
My friend used Fabreeze to get her smoke smell out. I guess it all depends on how bad it is. But Fabreeze couldn't hurt, it just might need to be done several different times a few days apart.

Have you driven her car in the snow to see how it handles? I went from a front wheel drive to rear wheel drive and it is so different in rain and snow. I didn't think it would be that much difference, but it is very noticeable. I love my car, but the front wheel drive one did so much better in snow.

I need help from somebody who is an html whiz!! I got a template for my blog and I know how to go in and change basic things..but I realized in the code there is no place for a link for comments. How do I go about putting that in?? I've tried and can't figure it out!

message 768: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just wanted to apologize to the group for the fact that I am currently 26 and have been out of college since '07. It didn't seem such a big deal when I was 25 but now I feel old. I have looked into other groups and most are either too big (I go to work and by the time I get home there are 10 new threads with 100 comments each) or too small (no comments for months). This group seems like a nice size and has a diverse group of people with very different tastes in books and life. So just wanted to let people know that I do intend to move on (any suggestions) and I'm not creepy.

message 769: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm pretty sure that there are others in this group that are older than you, Annashu. This group is for anyone in their 20's anyway! It's not creepy at all. :)

message 770: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen What! Annashu! Don't be silly, you are completely welcome in this group regardless of your age! I don't think it's weird at all and I'll be sad if you leave us.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
You are definitely welcome here!! I'm 24! I'm an oldie too! :) That's why I wrote in the description for those who are in their 20's..we have a good thing going on here! I think even our "younger" members are super mature so it works out well! :)

message 772: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Please stay Annashu! We love you here!

message 773: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) haha thanks gals, I wasn't really planning on leaving anytime soon. I guess I am just in the middle of a weird stage where I feel old but need to be more mature, or grown-up or something. It could also be just winter-time blues. Anyway thanks for making me feel welcome and not being weired-out by my geezerly status.

Annashu, you're 26, so what? 26 isn't old! Sure it's grand, nobody cares! Glad to hear you're staying! :-)

message 775: by Matthew (new)

message 779: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Can I make an observation? How sucky is it not to have money? Like, I don't feel like I spend that much. I rarely go shopping, or out to the movies, or out to dinner during the school year... and I usually put money into my savings account as well as checking... so it just hurts so much to see the number go down.

I lost half of my college fund in the stock market crash, causing me to take out a small loan which covers what my parents would normally pay, but I still pay my share. So my dad informed me today that I only have like $1000 left in the account after he took my share out to pay for my last semester. It just hurts b/c I started that account when I was so young and I have rarely taken money out of it (maybe $50 twice) minus the college stuff. As I said, I really don't think I spend much money so it just feels like I deprive myself and slave away for nothing sometimes. I want to save up to take trips and such but it feels impossible b/c there's always some one to pay and no one is ever paying me enough.

I know most of you are probably in the same boat. Does anyone else just feel like all their dreams are out of reach when they look at their bank account?

message 780: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I know how you feel Lynn. I always try to make a goal of getting my bank account above a certain number, but it never works. Something always comes up.

btw, thanks everyone for your advice on the car. It looks like I'll be buying my aunt's car! It's scary to be spending that kind of money, but I'm excited!

message 781: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I know exactly how you feel Lynn. I've worked since I was 16 and maybe I have been a little frivolous here and there but it would always even out at the end of the month. Recently I paid off my credit card (the one I used to buy books and for emergencies in college) and was super excited but then a few months later I lose a crown and am uninsured so now I have another huge debt to the dentist. It is a never ending cycle that just sucks.

Hopefully though having a college education will allow us to make enough money to pay off all the bill that accumulate because of college.

message 782: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) I guess I'm really, really lucky. Here in Portugal, unless you go to a private university, the fees are ~1000€/year (which would be 1,441.20 USD). Since unis are in the city, only if you live somewhere other than where you're going to study (if you go to another city, or live in a small town) you have to move out of your parents' house, and since I've lived in the capital my whole life, I don't have to pay for a place to stay at. I never had to get a job, and we never had to make a saving, all my parents spend is money for the uni books, which aren't always expensive; the fees (that are payed in two parts, so it's my mum's salary twice a year); around 12€ for my monthly bus pass, and maybe 7€/week for me to have lunch (haha all I eat is a cheese sandwich..). Then again, I'm given 20€/month for anything that isn't uni-related, clothing, concerts and books included, so I'm poor myself :P

message 783: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I am in a little different situation. I never saved for college but I have a really good job. They are the reason I went back to college. I don't get paid huge amounts, but it is decent. My issue is I have a house payment and a car payment. I could never do it all if my mother didn't live at my house and help out.

I agree with Annashu. The education will create opportunity for a higher paying job, and the debt/poorness we are in now will work itself out. Keep pushing! :)

message 786: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments How horrible!

message 787: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't worry, by fire they probably mean that someone was smoking in the bathroom and the fire alarms went off. Normally I ignore fire alarms at college, but this time I had to leave, they evacuated us all.

message 788: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Saved By Grace, reapplying isn't completely pointless. First it shows that you really are interested in working, and second, some places only keep them on "active file" for a few weeks.

Roisu, Fire and Library! How Sad. Hopefully it was just a false alarm like you think.

message 789: by [deleted user] (new)

Just discovered there's a new blasphemy law that is in effect in Ireland as of the 1st January 2010. Someone in this country could get a fine of like E25000 for saying something blasphemous.

Holy shit.

message 790: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) thats just crazy Roisu

message 791: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Holy crap Roisu. That is... wow. What kind of things are considered blasphemous?

message 792: by Tami (last edited Jan 06, 2010 01:32PM) (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I was wondering the same thing. A Christian would have a different idea than a Muslim, or even a Jew. And if you are Atheist, is anything blasphemous? Then if the law says anything someone or anyone would consider blasphemy, then noone would be able to hardly talk. How strange.

**Edit**
I just googled blasphemy and it looks like recently they are adding to the definition "Hateful Language" so I guess it isn't necessarily going against ones relegious beliefs like I first thought, it would include be derogatory and hateful to others because of their religious beliefs. Hopefully that is why the law was passed. To help with Hate Crimes.

message 793: by [deleted user] (new)

Saying things like (and I say these things for illustrative purposes only) Jesus f***ing christ. Basically, if you say anything that would piss off a religious group, say something blasphemous in front of a cop etc you could be fined and charged.

Okay, I remember a few of you mentioning football teams before. Are your teams in the playoffs? Any good games/bad games lately? I can't remember any of the teams mentioned specifically.

I did watch the Arizona/Green Bay game (well the second half) and what a game! I love it when it is tense like that. Landslides suck!

Here's something else completely random, is anyone going to the ALA Midwinter Conference in Boston this month? I want to go but I don't want to go by myself haha.

I thought we had a 1001 books thread but couldn't find it, so thought I would post this here. I was at Barnes and Noble today and they had a lot of their classics on sale for buy 2 get the 3rd free. This would be a cheap way to collect a bunch of the books on the list. I am not sure how long it lasts or if it is available online. Just thought I would let everyone know.

**edit** online it says hard backs only, in the store they had the sign on the paper backs too, hopefully that wasn't a mistake. :)

message 800: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I can tell you for sure it's both hardcover and paperback classics. I'll find out the end date when I go to work tomorrow.
