Justine (paperbackheart) I only had to do summer homework for AP classes, but I think it was just reading. Maybe an essay or two.

message 602: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I only had summer reading for AP US History, and every other year we had optional things that no one ever did. One thing I did do, though, was the library summer reading program; I loved that! I wish they had something like it for adults.

message 603: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Tahleen, I know what you mean! When my cousin was up here earlier this month, she joined the summer reading program and I totally wished I could have joined too.

message 604: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I must be lucky--my library has a summer reading program for kids, teens, and adults! Ours is just finishing up...I'm not sure why they didn't take it into August. It was kind of fun, but it was more of a contest than anything.

message 605: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I'm pretty sure I still have the trophy from one summer reading program :] I'm not sure if they have one for adults.. I've never looked into it, but Jess, you've made me determined to find out next year!

message 606: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Aw we never got trophies! I think we were entered in raffles and stuff.

message 607: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) We had summer homework up in Canada.

message 608: by Liz (new)

Liz I only ever had summer reading. I also remember doing a summer reading program before 5th grade and getting a free t-shirt for I believe reading either a certain number of books or for a certain number of hours.

Too Funny!

We were moving all the furniture out of the living room for the carpet cleaners to come, and my little nephew was helping. He would take an armful of books into the bedroom, stack them how he thought they should be, then come back for more.

He saw my copy of Count of Monte Cristo and looked at the cover for a minute. Then he informed me "that is the guy on Nanny McPhee."

Too cute! He is 4, loves books, but also loves movies, and right now that is one of his favorites.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Ok, I have another cute kid story. I have three cousins that are younger than me. (Actually they are my cousins children, but same difference). There is Baylie, who is ten, Devon is eight, and Conner is two, almost three. I can tell you, those kids provide endless entertainment for the family. Someone in the family brought Cinnamon Bears to our last camping trip, the really good ones that are big and hot. Well Connor decided to try one. He put one in his mouth chewed for a minute and then started crying because it was too hot. So we gave him some water and he calmed down. About fifteen minutes later we noticed that he had grabbed a handful and was sitting there eating them. He'd put one in his mouth, chew, start crying and then take a drink of water. And then he’d start the whole process over again. It was hilarious. I just wish we'd had a camera!

message 611: by Janet (new)

Janet I hate when you have moments where you wish you had a camera. Haha but it's still funny!!

I start student teaching tomorrow! Ok...so we don't have kids until the 24th but teachers go back tomorrow!! I am really nervous and don't really know what to expect! Wish me luck!!!

message 612: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Good luck! You'll be great!

Good luck!!

message 615: by R (new)

R (feste) Ahaha. I loved the cute kid stories. They're just so adorable but infuriating sometimes.

Good luck with your student teaching Janet. I'm sure you'll do just fine!

School's started for me already... After months away, I'm just starting to get used to the collegiate atmosphere all over again.

message 616: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I bought a Kindle a few months ago and am thinking about buying a different cover and light. I don't want to have an extra cover/light just laying around though so I'm wondering if anyone is considering getting a Kindle and needs a cover/light.

message 617: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments So I go to the same university as four of my cousins, (used to be five, but one just graduated with her Masters) Anyway, we just found out that all four of us are registered for the same online class, Botany in Human Affairs. Its going to be an interesting semester! :)

you have it made if you have a group project. Well, that is if you get along with your cousins. :)

So I was looking at the giveaways section and noticed this book: Riders of the Spew by Robert Lee Thompson.

Each time I see it I laugh because I think of Hermoine and S.P.E.W. and the book is a religious one, so not quite the same thing.

Sorry, total random/pointless thought!

My cousins are some of my best friends, so it'll be great. :)

The random thought made me laugh, I would have thought of the same thing! "Its not spew its S.P.E.W.!" lol.

I think cleaning is therapeutic..I swear. I've cleaned for two days straight...that's how MESSY my room is. I got rid of alot of things and organized better and I just feel so much more calm. I barely was going into my room before because it was a disaster area and I felt anxious everytime I walked into my room..I just never knew where to start. But I decided I just needed to do it..and I don't know..it just makes me feel better. Less stressed. I feel like one area of my life is neat and tidy.

Anyone else know what I mean? :)

message 622: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie yep! I've been keeping my room at school pretty clean and organized (I've committed to tidying up for like 5 mins before bed every night and that helps so much. Keeps things from snowalling) I went home to get some stuff last weekend and my room at home is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO messy and it stressed me out too much!!!

Lynn wrote: "yep! I've been keeping my room at school pretty clean and organized (I've committed to tidying up for like 5 mins before bed every night and that helps so much. Keeps things from snowalling) I went..."

That's a really great idea..to commit to cleaning for 5 minutes before bed. I feel as though my room gets messy because I just throw things on the floor and think I'll get to it later. But 5 minutes a night would probably take care of anything I just threw on the floor that night.

message 624: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I know exactly what you mean. I try really hard to keep my room clean but it seems like one lazy day off and my room snowballs into a disaster area. Five min. before bed seems like a good idea, except that most nights I can't wait to crawl into bed with my book...

So now for something completely different yet random. Does anyone live in the NC or GA area? I'm going to visit Durham and Savannah in Nov and am wondering about the weather. Actually I want to buy some new warmish weather clothes but it feels foolish since it is starting to get cold here already so I want to justify it buy claiming it need it for my vacation....

Ahh I'm going crazy! About half of my friends are still in college..where I want to be..and the rest are in the "real" world with ME..and they are all married and stuff. I'm just in the middle somewhere there..unhappy as hell! I want to go back to school!! I miss classes! I miss writing papers! I miss having tons of people around! I miss learning! I miss my professors!I miss the dorms! as much as a never thought I'd miss ANY of those things! I just miss college life! :(

I should have turned college into a 7-10 year plan :)

message 626: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Aw, I'm sorry Jamie! I do have to say that while the summer break was nice, I'm glad to be back in class again.

message 627: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Jamie, I've been feeling the same way. I hate working 8 hours everyday and not really having my friends around all the time anymore. I've been thinking about going back to school but I know grad school will be totally different than undergrad. I'm not ready to move on yet!

message 628: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Same here! I keep thinking that maybe if I go back to school I'll be happy..but it's going to be totally different. It's wierd because when I was a junior/senior I was so ready to be done with college and move on! I wish I would have just let myself enjoy that time more!

message 629: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I know exactly what you mean, my best friend never went past freshmen year and she just went back and I'm so jealous of her. I really miss learning new things and the feeling that after graduation anything would be possible. Now that I'm out of school I just feel stagnant.

message 630: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
That's exactly how I feel! Stagnant. I'm at a crappy job that I hate...I just keep trying to tell myself I'm lucky to have a job..but I feel like all that motivation I once had to go out and do something great...it's just dwindling..because of the job..and because I'm just blah. I don't feel like they prepared me well enough for what life would be like AFTER college. I mean..if you think about it..since we were like 5 all we've known is school really. It's just what you do every year. And now it's just gone. Unless of course you go back to school. But who has the money for that right now!?

I hereby declare that being a "grown-up" SUCKS!

message 632: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) haha this reminds me of that scene in Billy Madison where Adam Sandler grabs that chubby kid by the cheeks & shakes him, saying "stay in school as loooong as you can!"

message 633: by Kimberly (last edited Aug 25, 2009 11:24AM) (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments It's a little scary thinking of life after college. I've been a student my whole life. I think I'm going to kinda lose my identity, I mean after I graduate, what will I be?

(If that makes any sense at all.)

message 634: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Oh my gosh this is EXACTLY how I feel too!! I hate how different my life is now. My job is okay, I like it well enough, but I really miss taking classes and discussing literature in that setting... as much as I love it here on Goodreads, I miss physical interaction with people! Plus I REALLY miss Ithaca, to the point of homesickness. I think I'm going to try to move back there after I graduate with my master's degree (which I haven't even applied for yet). Maybe I'll feel differently by then, but I just felt more at home in Ithaca, and there was WAY more culture there than the Boston suburb I live in now.

Ha ha! Heather that's my favorite part of that movie! But yea, after getting my bachelors degree I plan to go on and get my masters and maybe even further than that, not for the education or more job possibilities, but so I can prolong entering the "real world."

message 636: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Jessie that's probably a smart thing to do considering how the economy is now! It's not the first time I've heard someone say to hide away in grad school for a couple of years.

message 637: by Janet (new)

Janet GO BRONCOS!!! Suck it Cutler and Chicago!! Haha just had to get that off my chest. If you know football...you know what I am talking about! ;) Sorry all you Chicago fans out there.

One of my best friends whole family are Bronco's fans. So we had to raz her a little. I totally understand about the wrong team winning, after all, I am a Cubs Fan! :)

message 643: by Janet (new)

Janet I don't want to start a thread if no one is interested in it but...just wanted to see if anyone watches Ghost Hunters? I have really gotten into that in like the past year! It's just so fun and exciting! Anyone else into...or am I the only loser? Haha! :)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Janet..I've never watched it. What channel is it on?

Has anyone seen the show Hoarders? I watched it last night and I just felt soo bad for these people. It was sick how much filth they live in and how much they are willing to hold on to. I just couldn't believe it. I think my grandma is a compulsive hoarder like that. My mom never let us go to her house when we went down to Florida. Then finally one year they ( my mom and her siblings) did an "intervention" and while she was away they all met there and cleaned her house out. My mom said it was disgusting. She was so upset by it. Things that were clearly rotten still in the fridge..roaches everywhere because of the mess.

I feel like maybe people who have grown up poor or through the Depression try so hard not to waste things and sometimes it gets taken to the extreme. I don't know. It just amazed me the rationale that some of these people had.

message 645: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I think people that lived through the Great Depression or in similar circumstances are prone to be hoarders. It is sad.

My brother in laws grandma wasn't super bad, but when they moved her, they found ziploc's full of cotton from the inside of aspirin jars. Just in case she needed cotton. Things like that.

Janet, I haven't heard of Ghost Hunters. Give details!

message 646: by Janet (new)

Janet I saw that Hoarders show! It made me want to throw everything out!! Haha. I kind of feel like my mom is that way but not that bad. She does keep a lot of crap that she doesn't need, though. Haha.

Ghost Hunters is on SiFi...except they spell it SyFy now. Who knows why!! Haha. Anyway it's about this group of people and they own their own business and get called in to haunted places. They have all these crazy tools to detect ghosts. Sometimes it's kind of lame but other times it's really cool/creepy!! One Halloween they did the Stanley Hotel (In Colorado from The Shining). It was so creepy!!! Doors would open and shut. And they're really not there to prove anything is haunted, they're there to debunk it. But some ARE haunted! It's crazy!!

Anyway I don't think I am explaining it very well. It's just kind of cool/different show. It's on SyFy on Wednesday nights. They usually play a lot of episodes all evening. Might be fun to check it out!

message 647: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Janet, I've watched that show before and I really like it, just not enough to actively go out of my way to watch it haha. But I love ghost stories and ghost-y things.

Jamie, a couple of years ago, my mom decided to clean out my grandmother's pantry (our uncle lived there too isn't really what you'd call "active"). It was quite disgusting--there were cans that expired in the mid-1990s in there (and how long does it take for a canned good to expire, I wonder?). My mom also said it was the Depression mentality, that one day it would come in handy to have all this stuff. She wasn't like that with everything, just food. The same boxes of cereal sat on top of their refrigerator for like 6 years.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Ever have those moments when you overhear something at work and it makes you laugh out loud? I just had one of those (they happen all the time where I work, but this is the best one yet). I was sitting at my desk when I heard this conversation from the next row over.

Female Program Manager: Hey, do you have a sec?
Male Program Manager: I have lots of secs.
Pause
Engineer: He means that he has lots of time.

message 649: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) hahaha Kimberly, that's too funny. I love overhearing bits of conversation like that.
