Justine (paperbackheart) I'm trying to find the best way to get home next weekend. I can fly out of San Jose (1 hour drive to airport) for $300 dollars or Monterey (two minutes from work) for $400 - this is kind of a last minute trip. Or drive 8 hours and be afraid of my car overheating/exploding and having a panic attack the whole time. Last option is a combo train/bus trip with will take between 9 and 11 hours but is $60 and to get to San Diego at a reasonable time I need to catch a 1am bus. So I will need to take that day off work - but it is last minute and I don't know how to tell my boss.
I feel like this is a math problem, but really there should be no question right? Suck it up on the bus/train. Mini vacations stress me out.

I think I would do the bus. You can have time to sit there and read and not worry about driving and crap!

Justine, If I had the time off, I would totally come pick you up and drive you to San Diego! That would be a really long road trip for me! So Fun!

Hey thanks! At least I know now its a real language, not just someone trying to trick my friend!

I've just started a new job on the Air Force base near my house. I'm loving it! But I've been so freaking busy I haven't had time to check up on this group (or even read! Scary). I have a lot of catching up to do. Over a hundred posts or something like that to read!

The bus would also be better because you don't have to do all the complicated security stuff and luggage allotments...flyinig from England to teh states after a year in England is going to be interesting.

Tahleen Have fun Jamie!

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Have fun, and I hope the weather cooperates.

message 561: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Here's a question... does anyone have any tips about what to do at a job interview/what to expect?

message 562: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) The only tip I have is to lean in to the interviewer. It gives them the impression that you're really interested in what they have to say.

message 563: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Tahleen, we had to interview someone that does interviews back for some class and the top thing that most of these people said was maintain eye contact. Not to the point of creepy, but make sure to look at the person interviewing you.

Good Luck.

message 564: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Be confident, be positive, and be enthusiastic.. apparently those are things companies look for.. also be knowledgeable, not just about the industry (which I'm sure you are ;) ), but also about the specific company you're interviewing for. You don't have to know everything, obviously, but knowing something would be good. :) I hope that helps... good luck!

message 565: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Awesome, thanks for these tips guys! I will use them tomorrow :)

message 566: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've heard that it is good to ask informed questions about the position to show that you are interested. I've never had a real interview though so I don't really know.

message 567: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Thanks Annashu, I'll keep that in mind... I've never had a real interview before either haha. Awesome. Anyway, I'll let you all know how it goes.

message 568: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Okay, so I had my interview today, and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. I think it went okay, but most of the time my interviewer was talking to me about the job and what responsibilities I would have... and it is a very different job than I thought it would be. It's entirely clerical, I would have no real training, and the job is apparently for the head of the division; he runs the show. I also won't be working with actual book material. So I don't know what to do. My parents keep trying to tell me that I should take it if I get it, and that I don't know what it will be like until I get there, but I don't have a good feeling. Plus he said I would have to be there for a year, so if I hate it I'm screwed.

message 569: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments They say that, but is he making you sign a contract legally holding you there for a year... I mean, if you don't stay for a year is there some kind of penalty, or something? Or will he just not give you a recommendation for your next position?

About the job itself: what do you mean by no real training.. like you wouldn't be learning anything that would transfer to a better fitting job? Plus, I think there's always got to be some kind of clause that gives some kind of probationary period (I think?). Something to look into anyway...

The good thing is that the company is in the field you want to be in, so it'll look great on your resume. Also, you would probably make really good connections. And, if you find a position you do want at a company you want to work for, you can always get recommendations from people you work with other than your boss.

message 570: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Also it is possible that once you start working your duties could shift into something that suits you better. If there isn't anything legally forcing you to stay a year I would at least give it a shot.

message 571: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Hmm, okay. We'll see if I even get it. By no training, I mean they expect me to teach myself everything I will need to know in order to do my job, like there won't be anyone to teach me to do stuff, like how to use the software or whatever. But thanks for your advice! It is greatly appreciated.

message 572: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) So I open my store tomorrow which is great because I love opening. The only problem is that I have to be there at 7am and I closed tonight so didn't get home until almost 8pm then I had to feed the dogs and our chickens and water the garden which didn't get done until 8:30. It is now 9 and I just ate dinner. I usually try to be in bed and reading by 10 so that I'm asleep by 11ish which gives me 7 hours of sleep. There is no way I'm going to be relaxed enough to fall asleep by then.

Does anyone have any tips on how to fall asleep after running around like crazy?

Warm milk. It sounds gross, but it really does work. When warm milk hits your stomach it releases a chemical that relaxes you.

message 575: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Milk occasionally upsets my stomach so I try and avoid it, I will look into melatonin though thanks.

Justine (paperbackheart) Does anyone have any experience moving several hundred miles with pets? If I am driving by myself there is pretty much NO WAY that I am bringing my cat in the car with me - I love her but she is a brat and hates being in her carrier/the car and I'm already a very anxious driver. If a miracle occurs and my boyfriend will help me move back to San Diego, it might be doable: When I moved here he came down and filled his car with my stuff and the cat so I wouldn't have to deal with her in my car, but I would really like to only take one car - mostly so I don't have to do the driving. My mom has offered to fly up and drive down with me, but she is also an anxious driver so we should never be in a car together for more than fifteen minutes.
My favorite option is to have someone here ship her down on the train or on a plane, but I don't know if this option actually exists or if it's something I've made up. Reggie (cat) may or may not have been smuggled into the country illegally, so I don't even know if they'll let her on a plane.
Thoughts? Suggestions? New ideas?

message 583: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Well..... I don't know how you feel about this, buuut I think Petsmart (or any pet-type store) have products for pets that "calm" them, which I assume are basically drugs for pets. Since the drive is only going to take a day, that might be an option.

I haven't had this problem because (so far) my pets are pretty good with roadtrips. I brought my cat down from WA to CA and she seemed to like it. And when we drove up to Monterey my dog had a good time, but we had to stop a lot. It was a long trip for her, though... she's way more into short roadtrips :)

I'm not sure about the whole being an illegal cat :P thing with airlines, but I would think as long as Reggie is registered and up to date with all her shots and stuff, you should be fine. Who knows, maybe they don't require that stuff because they're locked in their carriers?

Sorry I wasn't much help... good luck :)

message 584: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Thanks Mandee! I'll look into it.

message 585: by Janet (new)

Janet A lot of vets have stuff like that. They usually give it to a dog before it gets put on a plane so they'll just sleep through most of the flight. I would rather ask my vet than buy something in a store. That is just me though. Good luck! Let us know what you come up with because I am very interested!!

Matthieu | 130 comments Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) is my sleep aid.

message 587: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 145 comments I'm sorry, did I say melatonin? I meant N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine. : )

I only knew Benadryl as an antihistamine. I didn't know it also worked as a sleeping aid.

message 588: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Benadryl is a great sleeping aid, when I am regularly having trouble sleeping I just take a half dose and it works like a charm, as long as I have time for 9-10 hours of sleep.

message 589: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Benadryl doesn't make me sleepy. I know the package says it may, but I have never had that happen. The only things that seem to make me sleepy are caffeine pills, but that may be just because I am already sleepy when I take them to try to stay awake. :)

message 590: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Benadryl completely knocks me out. I can't take it for allergies unless I'm okay with going to sleep :)

Justine, I've had experience moving iwth my dog when I was younger, and we used to let him spread out in the back seat with my brother and I. It was a bit cramped but okay. Would your cat be okay if you let her ride outside the carrier?
I also know that when my family later got an SUV we would put our dog in the very back so everyone would have their space and we'd put a pet barrier between him on our luggage. It worked really well for everyone, so maybe something like that? I'm guessing your car, however, probably isn't that big...

message 592: by Janet (new)

Janet Random story! Just saw Liz's post about letting the cat ride outside of the carrier. My mom had to take our cat to the vet but my step dad had put his carrier up too high in the garage, so she just had to put the cat in the car. He walked across the dash-board the whole way to the vet! I guess it was really funny!!..Ok sorry just thought I would share that funny story.

Spencer (spencerafreeman) ha! Yes we do, Kimberly :) But you just can't help it if theyre so cute

message 596: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Liz, she is NOT good out of her carrier! When we were evacuated for the fires in 2007 she was roaming around and rolled down windows/tried to crawl under the pedals/peed on me.
I am also against subjecting her to being in the car for eight hours again - especially now that I have to drive around with the heater on all the time to keep my car from overheating. This whole situation is just bad.

Complete random thought/question: Did you all get assigned homework over the summer in grade school?

I have noticed in a bunch of books I have read and on a lot of shows I have watched either on television or at the movies, the kids are assigned homework over their summer break. I never had a teacher do that, so was wondering if it was a common thing, just not maybe where I went to school.

message 598: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I don't really remember being assigned homework exactly but there was always like a packet of suggested stuff, like a list of books and math or spelling worksheets. I think it was just stuff to give us an idea of what we would be doing the next year.

We never had even suggested things for the summer. I remember we (my family) would either make trips to the book mobile or the libaray all summer long, but it was never required or suggested by our teachers or school.
