I want to visit the Southwest, like Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, etc. I would REALLY like to go down Rte 66 and spend like a month or so, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to do that!

message 452: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments You should! I've always thought that would be really cool, too. I really, really want to go to Colorado.

In Oct we're taking a road trip to Albuquerque, NM to visit a friend that moved there after graduation. We're going during some festival, so hopefully it'll be really fun.

Janet Come to Colorado!! That is where I live and it is so beautiful!!!! Let me know if you ever do come out here!

Well personally I think Utah is beautiful, but I might be a little biased. lol. If you do visit Utah, let me know!
Oh, and if you want to see all those states, Four Corners is a must see, its kinda boring out there but its not very often that you can stand in four different states at once.

Trust me on this one, you can travel, live life, eat food, fall in love, etc without money. In Evasion the guy travels thousands of miles across America on $7 dollars.

I know, right... that's one of the reasons I want to go! But also, since I've been back down here in SoCal I've met a few people from Colorado, and they've been AWESOME!! I mean, really, some of the best people I've ever met! So I thought great place, great people ...I definitely gotta go there! I haven't planned a trip yet, but it's absolutely going to happen. I'll keep you posted... What part of Colorado do you live in?

message 457: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Sounds like I need to read Evasion...

I have been all around Utah, Arizona, Nevada and really Southern California, so I am branching up further North into California next month. Not too much North, don't want to be too cold. Road trips are a blast.

message 459: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Aren't they though? I love them! Esp if you leave plenty of time for random stops, and you're with good people. I've never taken one by myself, but that might be fun too. Where are you headed to?

message 460: by Janet (new)

Janet Mandee I am more from the Denver area but I have been all over this great state! The mountains, of course, are the best part!! Haha. But keep my posted!! If you need a free place to stay or just some advice on where to go, I'll help you out!!

message 461: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) My best friend and I are always talking about ditching everything and driving cross-country, sadly though as we get older we keep accumulating responsibilities (I also don't have a license which is a small problem) . I moved back and forth between the coasts a couple of times when I was little so I've actually done the drive 3 times but it never was for fun and I was too young anyway.

message 462: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I have an old friend that lives in Pismo Beach so that is where I am headed. I like to drive all by my lonesome. First, I don't have to stop for others or get agreement for stops I want to take. Second, I can travel at the pace I want. Third, I can have complete control of the radio! Longest road trip by myself was 8 hours one way. I think this one is close. The thing is I have friends where I go, so I am not totally by myself once I get there.

message 463: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Man I totally missed a lot of this conversation. But yeah. Road trips! *thumbs up* :)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments :) ha

Janet, thanks!! One of my friends is going to Denver this summer for an opera gig. And I have two other friends that just moved back to Aspen ::sigh:: because it's too expensive to live here. Ugh....money.

Yay, Pismo! Are you guys going riding (the dunes)?

message 465: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
No idea. No real plans, just running away. Original thought was to go somewhere where I didn't know anyone, then I could just lounge and read and whatever. But I have been missing him when he is here, and he is busy the times I have been close to down there, so I decided to make the trip there.

message 466: by Mandee (new)

Janet Mandee- I have a really good friend from Aspen! I wonder if she knows them, it's not really the biggest town! And the rent is too expensive where you live? Aspen is pretty expensive! Where do you live?

message 469: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments She might... until he moved back he was part of a band called August House http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm11hp... He's the lead singer (he shows up first in the video). They used to be harder, and then they changed their style a little for their last album, but now I don't know if it's going to be released. This has some other info like band members names and stuff.... http://www.youtube.com/user/augusthouse His name is Chip Herter. Or she might know him by Everett (I forget if that's how he spells it) Herter.

Yeah, cost of living is insane here. I live in Orange County, CA. Last time I checked it has one of the highest costs of living under San Fransisco, even higher than New York. I don't understand it because it's not that awesome here (I like it here, but not for what it costs). Things may have changed since I checked though, with the economy doing so bad. But about Aspen being expensive... since their family lives there, they're probably getting some type of help. I don't know for sure though.

Let me know if she knows him... that would be pretty cool. He is seriously the greatest guy.

Sounds like you are going to the Balloon Fiesta (Hot air balloons from all over the world). The balloon glow and mass acsencion are awesome, but cold since it starts around 4am. Layers is the best way to pack. And if you want to know what there is to do in town, pick up an Alibi, free newspaper with all there is to do, eat and everything in between each week.

Emily, you mentioned you went to Cal Poly in one of the threads. Isn't that in/by Pismo Beach San Luis Obipso? I am sure I murdered that spelling.

message 472: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Thanks, Verity! Yep, that's when we're going. His family is from Guatemala, so he's flying them here for a mini vacation, and then we're all going to road trip it over there for that. I'm a little worried about the money, and missing school since it's not during a break or anything, but hopefully once it's here I'll just be ready to have fun...

I'm in England for the year, and it's very different buying guns here (involves getting permits or something like that) so they actually tend to think that the gun control in the states is a bit crazy.
On the note of beautiful places we like to visit, I acutally worked in Grand Teton National Park, with beauteous views of the mountians. Going hiking on my weekends was amazing.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Liz, you worked in the Tetons? Lucky! That's one of my favorite places.

ahh..I just got home from work now..at 2 am. well like 15 minutes ago. I'm so tired & yet so awake all at the same time. That is probably due to being hopped up on Monster energy drinks! The president of the company is coming to visit our store tomorrow and we had to do ALOT of stuff..and stupid me decides to volunteer to help and stay late! WHO DOES THAT?? haha Someone who needs money I suppose..aka ME!

Alright..bed time for real. I'm feeling like I'm going to crash.

haha NOO. we are one of the largest in the area. Stupid me for not strategically picking a small store.

Tahleen I feel like the small store might be worse... less room to move. Unless it is so packed full of crap that you can't move anyway.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments So this could go in either the Happy thread or the Pissed off thread. But I can’t decide how I feel so I’m just posting it here.
So tonight my dad had just made himself a peanut butter and apple butter sandwich (his and my favorite late night snack) and sat down at the computer to check something. I'm in the living room reading when my mom yells for me to call 911. I wasn't sure if she was serious or not. My dad said he couldn't see, and he wasn't talking straight. He wasn't looking at us or anything, it was like he was drunk, but he hasn't had a drop of alcohol since he was younger than I am. Anyway I called 911 and she asked me a few questions and then told me she was sending an ambulance to check him out. We got my dad away from the computer and took him into the living room. He couldn't even walk straight. We tried to get him to the couch and he just kinda fell until he had his head on the couch trying to get his balance back. When the ambulance got here I let them in and lo and behold, the second guy is someone I know, I went from elementary on through high school with him. Though I know him mostly from mutual friends. Anyway they checked my dad out and turns out the moron had just taken ambien and wouldn't tell us!!! They checked his vitals and everything just to be sure, but my dad is just fine. He's asleep now. UGH! I want to beat the living daylights out of him! I'm so relieved that he is ok, (my dad is like my best friend) but so mad that he made us worry so much. ARGH!
We live in a tight-nit community. Our neighbors probably saw the ambulance, and told everyone. Starting tomorrow afternoon we'll have neighbors stopping by every few minutes with casseroles and jello salads and checking to make sure we're ok. Which I love, because it shows that they really care. But having to explain what really happened? That will be interesting...

message 484: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Geez... that's scary!! Thank goodness he's okay. Is that a normal response to Ambien? I've never taken it so I have no idea. I don't think I could deal with something happening to my mom, so if you say you and your dad are close I could imagine how scary that must have been.

message 485: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Wow! That is scary Kimberly! I'm glad everything is ok though!

message 486: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) That sounds really scary Kimberly. And frustrating dealing with the neighbors, we have the same "problem" in my town and my work is like a gossip hub so I'm constantly having the set records straight. Glad your did is ok though, and good luck with the neighbors.

message 487: by R (new)

R (feste) Whoa, that's terrifying! I absolutely wouldn't have thought that Ambien would cause side effects like that. Thank goodness he's okay though! Hopefully the neighbours will be understanding about it...

message 488: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen That is pretty crazy! I think this was probably the best thread to put it in, that is all pretty random, especially seeing the guy you know. I think I would like it too if people came by my house after they saw an ambulance with food and stuff, I would want to live in a community like that I think. I'm really glad your dad is okay!

message 489: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Today at work we had our annual health inspection which pretty much sucks cause we have to be super careful while she is there but other than then usual we passed. We are really pretty good except that the kitchen is old and not fully up to code just kinda grandfathered in.

message 490: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments To answer your questions, yes that can be a common side effect of Ambien. I've taken it before and it had some weird effects, nothing as big as my dads though. For me I just can't read the words blur, and my balance is off, but thats it. Oh, and it does affect my memory. I took it one time and then wrote a paper for my English class. I don’t remember writing it, but I got an A! lol.
My poor dad is pretty embarrassed, he doesn’t remember a lot of what happened, but he does remember the ambulance coming and them checking his vital signs and everything. I feel bad for him, but he’s able to joke about it.

message 491: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 143 comments Wow. I clearly haven't been on here in a while. This group has grown so much! And there is a new moderator..congrats Lori!

But..from looking around..it still looks as great as before!

message 492: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) That's so scary, Kimberly! I'm glad that he's okay.

I totally know what you mean about the tight-knit community. Although the city I live in isn't too small, it's not too big either. Our neighborhood is especially close, so I know that if something like that were to happen to my family and I, all of the neighbors would end up making their rounds with all kinds of food!

message 493: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I have that same kind of community. When my mom was ill, the neighborhood and our church really banded together and we honestly had a meal almost every day for a year. It was crazy! It's nice that people are so willing to help.

message 494: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Today I just realized something and it made me really really sad. This is very possibly and almost probably my last summer at home. It just makes me feel like childhood is for real over after this summer. After I graduate next year I'll be moving farther away to grad school and then probably even farther away after that. I'm afraid I won't have the same experiences when I come back to visit just for like a week at a time in the future. And I'll miss all my friends who are still at home. Like the whole town will forget about me and it won't matter that I was ever a part of it.. gaaahh I don't know.. it just bums me out so much. And I feel so much pressure now like I HAVE to make this summer count.

message 495: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen So I don't know if you all remember my guy issues (me falling for my best friend etc.), but I found out something that made me feel better this weekend. Apparently none of our friends like his new girlfriend haha. She never hangs out with us or even wants to hang out; she didn't show up at a house party this weekend where his band played, she didn't pay attention at the previous concert she attended, and today at a bbq we had she had wandered off with a group of her friends that she had brought and my friend/her bf had to go find her. She has not gained any points with us. I'm trying to be friendly and I'm starting conversations with her, but other than engaging in these conversations for a few minutes she doesn't seem that interested in getting to know her boyfriend's friends.

message 496: by [deleted user] (last edited May 11, 2009 09:24AM) (new)

Hahaha, rural Ireland has to have the most tight-knit communities ever...in many ways it sucks! The local gossip from down the road always knows everyones business,it really is desperate housewifes... and of course the parish priest is always interfering.

Lynn..I'm sorry that you feel bad. Change sucks sometimes...

Tahleen, haha, I'm delighted that nobody likes her!

Yeah..on Friday, I said goodbye to one of my friends for a good while, I won't see her for around a year. She is amazing, I'm really going to miss her...but we'll just have to work at staying close.

message 497: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Lynn, I kinda felt the same way when I moved away from home but I found out that while my relationship with my hometown changed it was in ways for the better. Whenever I visited I would appreciate things I had taken for granted before and it became like my safe haven where I could run away to and be a kid again. It takes a little extra effort to stay close with friends from a distance but it isn't impossible and also since you feel so strongly about your town it is unlikely that it will forget you.

message 498: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Thanks anna.. i just feel like I'm entering a really weird life stage. Lots of transitions coming up in the next couple years. And I've never felt ready to move on to the next stage.. I think I was the only person in my entire high school who wasn't looking forward to graduation. haha.

message 499: by Liz (new)

Liz Lynn, that dos suck. I felt like that after I graduated from high school because my family moved from Ohio to Minnesota. Even though I go to shcool in Ohio (and so do most of my friends), it's still hard to see them.
Tahleen wrote: "So I don't know if you all remember my guy issues (me falling for my best friend etc.), but I found out something that made me feel better this weekend. Apparently none of our friends like his new ..."
Tahleen, I htink it's totally acceptable to feel that way. This girl sounds b**chy. It also (to me, but what do I know) doesn't really sound like the relationship will last--even if you don't like the
friends, you have to give them a chance and put up with them on birthdays and such. At any rate, good luck :)

And (neither I know if you all remember my guy issues) that guy (which whom I was falling for) doesn't have a girlfriend anymore. so... YaY??
