What books do you want but are trying to resist buying?

Hi everyone,
New to this group and I definitely am a book-buying addict. I'm currently trying a book buying ban since my birthday was recently and my TBR pile nearly doubled. I want to last till Halloween or close but there's a few books I have my eye on at the moment.

This one is a YA novel about a girl who forgets everything about her day when she falls asleep. That's about all I know but it seems intriguing.
Sweetly-by Jackson Pierce.
A retelling of Hansel and Gretel which was one of my favorite fairy tales as a child.
I'm trying to wait for these to come out in paperback but not sure I'll last. So what books are everyone trying to resist purchasing?

I desperately want to buy:
Just My Type: A Book about Fonts. I love type fonts! I'm obsessed with type fonts! That book should be mine (and will be-but I can't do just yet, drat).
My own copy of Mickelsson's Ghosts-I recently won a copy of Words Made Fresh: Essays on Literature and Culture by Larry Woiwode from LibraryThing which was free which is good but Woiwode had a great essay about John Gardner & another even better one about Mickelsson's Ghosts that made me want to buy it immediately. So I got a copy from the library but it's way too long to read it in library time, even with renewals.

Shauna, I just finished "Sweetly" and to be honest, it wasn't any special. It was a good read, but waiting for it to come out in paperback would not be a bad idea, I don't think it is worthy buying hardcover anyway.

Regarding books I want to buy but am resisting, my list is about 150 books long. I have a special list of books I would like to get, but only if I can buy them used for a good price or new for a used price. They're books I'd like to have, but I can survive without them until I can get them really cheap.

Jokes aside though, yeah, being out of work sucks. My b/f's work went bankrupt a couple of weeks ago and I know how frustrated he is that he will be unemployed soon.

When it comes to trying to resist buying books, I go with the Borg: Resistance is futile. If I don't have money I have to stay out of bookstores and away from sites like this.

Agreed Teawench, resistence IS futile. I don't know why, but I just LOVE books. I rather buy them than almost anything else. But I'm also very frugal and I very rarely buy a book brand spanking new. I have so many books that it's hard to justify not waiting for anything I want to become available on a swap (I'm on several) or find it super cheap on half.com. It's not like I don't have something to read, ya know? I will buy a book new if it's a favorite author's book or a signing (like Wade Rouse). So, since I buy so few books brand new, I don't tend to resist. In fact, I know I'm off topic here, but Wade's newest book just came out, I'm Not the Biggest Bitch in this Relationship 6-copy solid counter Unit so I actually plan to buy it this weekend!

Ooooh...I'm about to start that one. One of my favorite indie bookstores just relocated to a larger location and had everything 30% off, so I snagged it. I still haven't managed to pick up a copy of I'm Not the Biggest Bitch in This Relationship: Hilarious, Heartwarming Tales About Man's Best Friends from America's Favorite Humorists, but that is the one tempting me right now.

"The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake" is a very interesting read, it's kind of a bizarre story but still interesting.

I am drowning in series right now. DROWNING. Right now, I'm trying to resist:

Eona: The Last Dragoneye - heard weird things about this (bonus love triangle = NOOOOOOOO), so I'm trying to wait for this to come out in paperback. Liked the first book but didn't love it. My library doesn't carry it and I don't want to plunk down $10+ on a book I might not like.
Heir to Sevenwaters - The first three books were good and wrapped up nicely into a trilogy... so what's with this and the other one? Are they as good? Do I want to find out?
Cold Magic - this looks SO INTERESTING but again, I'm drowning in series right now. Don't want to start any more at the moment. D:

Kings and Assassins - I have the first book in ebook format. I'd pick this up immediately (and complete a series, ha!), but the paperback version can be found for so. much. cheaper. than the ebook version. Format changes... ergh.

I no long let myself buy ANY books I want unless it's from a series I am collecting. I have over 60 novels in my TBR pile and I seriously need to chunk some of them off.

I love the book 'Good Omens' by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, and I am in a long battle with myself, not to buy any more copies... I already have 1 for curling up with, 1 for lending to others, 1 that is a signed copy of the newest edition, and 1 that is a signed first edition (my cherished copy), but there are so many other covers to collect... I want them all!!!! Someone stop me! How many times can you re-read a book before it stops being healthy and turns into pure obsession?

I have hundreds of unread books at home.

On Sunday I went to a birthday party, and my friend got a book , a new Danish title so you won't know it.
I was looking at it, and maybe stroking the cover just a little, it's by an author I like and a really nice edition. I would like to get a copy myself, and I decided to put it on my wish list for christmas.
But, I WANT IT NOW! It's ridiculous, I probably won't read it before next Summer, or in 2015, or even 2030 - but I need it to be home on my shelves. And be mine.
I'm resisting, at the moment, and feeling a little silly.

I would LOVE to get my hands on The Inklings by Humphrey Carpenter . I've always loved Tolkien and have read several biographies about him. This book, however, is much more expensive than the rest and I'm just having a hard time coughing up that much $ for it. Someday.... As for most other books? I just can't NOT buy - my husband is going to kill me someday - LOL!

Lol, I know exactly how you feel, Louise =]
When I see a book I want, even though I know it will take me forever to finally get around to reading it, I still want to know I have it ready and waiting on my shelves for when that day comes.

I usually don't buy "new release" books because I know I'll be able to get them a heck of a lot cheaper in just a matter of months.

[The only recent book I've bought as a new release was "HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS". In fact, I bought it on the day it was released and read it in under 24 hours - as a defense mechanism against spoilers!]

Right now, there is only one "new release" on my "to read" list:



"GOD, NO!" by Penn Jillette.

I'm a fan of Penn & Teller. I own the first three seasons of "BULLSH*T!" on DVD, have seen them perform live on stage, and have even read some of their other books. Penn, in particular, has carved out an editorial niche for himself, including a series of video logs called "Penn Says".

Love him or hate him, the guy doesn't hold back his opinion.

So why am I resisting buying "GOD, NO!"?

It's not the atheist theme. In fact, I'm interested to hear what he has to say on the subject.

It's simply price.

I've trained myself never to pay more than a few bucks for any book, and I know "GOD, NO!" will be available at a discount, or used, very soon.

So I'll read it eventually.

I'm currently trying to stay away from bookstores. My Bday is almost, and after that there is Sinterklaas (I'm dutch, and no it's not our replacement for christmas, we have that here too!) And till then I have enough books to read (which I keep reminding myself of every times I see a book I want)

But the book I've been resisting to buy for the last couple of months is: It's just to expensive! 70 for the book + 130 euro to send it here...

Currently I am resisting a particular book I saw in a bookshop last week called "Kitchen Gardens of Australia" by Kate Herd. It was released earlier this year and is fantastic.

There would be other books I'd like if I saw them in the op shop etc but the Kitchen Garden one is boring a hole in my brain. I'm trying to impose a book buying ban for a while (I seriously have so many books at present they are in piles and baskets dotted around the house) and I need to be saving money.
