Larry wrote: "She. Is. So. Disgusting."

That assinine comment is merely her SECOND mistake. Her first was messing with someone named "Hoffa," love them or hate them. I wouldn't discount the possibility of Jimmy Sr. emerging Romero-like from a landfill somewhere to feast on her brain, which would apparently be a snack rather than a meal.

America has many parties. A 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and on and on. None of them will ever be truly viable. To me, saying "America needs a third party" is about as uncontroversial a thing as you could possibly say. You hear people say it about every 2 minutes.

Scout, what would the platform of your third party be?

message 158: by Scout (last edited Sep 10, 2011 12:26AM) (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Damn, I was hoping someone would take up the cause for a third party. Nothing in the thread title says that you have to be able to defend your controversial statement, and I certainly can't defend this one. I know it's wishful thinking to expect that a third party could accomplish anything within a two-party system, but I sure as hell am tired of the status quo.
Aren't you?

message 159: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
I don't see how "a third party" would change the status quo. Both parties are quite corrupted by big money, because our political process is. Would "a third party" not be? If so, how would they be funded? How would they exist outside the political system? Perhaps they could meander along for awhile on small donations, maybe win some local elections, maybe even a seat in Congress (but even that is very dubious). How would that actually change the status quo? Their numbers would simply be too small to change anything.

message 160: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments As I said, I know it's wishful thinking to expect that a third-party politician could accomplish anything within a two-party system. Hell, a third-party candidate couldn't even be elected without campaign contributions from the wealthy, who would then have him by the neck. We don't have a meritocracy or a democracy. Is there a name for it - government controlled by the wealthy?

message 161: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Why yes. Funny you should ask. Plutocracy.

That's exactly what we have. And not just government - the media is also controlled by the wealthy.

Matt Lauer: $17 million/year.
Brian Williams: $13 million.
Diane Sawyer: $12 million.
Anderson Cooper: $11 million.
Bill O'Reilly: $10 million
Chris Matthews: $5 million
Rachel Maddow: $2 million

At those income levels, can those people relate to you? Can they understand what it's like to be struggling, maybe to not have health insurance? Do they have your interests at heart, or the interests of the corporate masters signing their paychecks?

And the same question to all the politicians funded by corporate donations. Politicians funded by Wall Street. Are they like you?

message 162: by Scout (last edited Sep 10, 2011 02:59AM) (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments No. So how, as citizens, do we change this? The people nominally in charge (media moguls and elected politicians) are the only ones who can change things. And they have no motivation to change because they answer to the people who pay them. We might as well stop struggling and go fishing. Nice weather for it.

I won't disagree with you. But human beings are also the most creative, resourceful and complicated creatures on earth. It's only because we are terrible that other things can seem so beautiful.

What is it about people that can't leave their fucking dogs at home when they go out? Do Fido and Rover really need to go with you to Kroger and sit alone in the car while you pick up a sixer and some feminine napkins?

Whenever I park next to a vehicle and the dog inside starts barking at me, I purposely antagonize the fucker with a quick smack on the glass to see if I can make it start foaming at the chops. Or better yet, stroke out.

Fuck 'em...

Lori wrote: "Fido comes with me because I'm running an errand after taking him to the park. And I hope you get bit!"

But Kevin said no weak sauce allowed.

Sorry, Fido. I'm still perched high atop the food chain. If you lunge at me from inside a parked car, I'm going to mess with your primordial instinct because there are few things that piss me off more. Obsessive-compulsive dog owners: If you can't control your vicious, ill-mannered cur, leave it at home.

I still say the Chinese have the right idea.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments President Obama is having problems because there's a difference in mindset between representing and governing, and he hasn't made the transition.

message 193: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments No replies must mean that the previous post isn't controversial but accepted.

message 194: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Yeah, Scout, I have to say, I found your comment @214 bogus. I tried to delete it, but it turns out you can't delete other people's comments.

I don't even know what "representing" means. As to governing, he's gotten a lot of legislation passed, some of it under extremely trying circumstances. If that's not governing, I don't know what is. He killed Osama bin Laden with his bare hands. What the fuck more do you want??

message 200: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Shut up and listen. Obama was a senator prior to his election as president. He represented the people. I'm saying that there's a difference between representing the people and governing them, and nothing in Obama's experience helped him make the transition to being President.
