Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Question Mark Smiley Face Pictures, Images and Photos

This challenge is similar to the "Over in a Flash" - an idea I stole (with permission!) from the SOS: Serious Overload of Series group and took to the Happily Ever After Cafe group (challenge is by the same name there).

This one is a little backwards. We like to do things backwards in this group (like the Game: Word Pairs - backwards). So we'll call this one:

I did?! The "I Completed a Challenge and Didn't Even Know It" ~ August Cover Hunt Challenge ~

Duration: All done but the double checking!

Rules: Review the books you read for August, 2011 and see if you have read at least 2 books with the following items found on their covers; choose 2 of the 3 options below. Be sure to post your book covers, dates read, and star ratings (you can just use ***). Feel free to do all three if you want.

COLOR: for a last bit of summer sky or robin's egg blue, book with a baby blue cover
SEASON: woman in a white dress, or a flowery sun dress on cover
ITEM: motorcycle on the cover; it is the perfect weather for it

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Are you letting GoodReads keep track of them, Susan?

Here is my link, if you don't understand what I'm talking about: my link text.

Nice and big and easy to read...but it reminds you of the rating you gave.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I don't know, CaroB. Checked your cover on your 2011 Reading Challenge. These look like sundresses to me:

This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress, #5) by Jeaniene Frost Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Night Huntress World, #2) by Jeaniene Frost First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

Are you saying these vamp ladies don't go out at noon? LOL! I think Cat does.

Lina | 5563 comments LOL, I thought they looked a bit like negligees, but if you think it fits, that works for me :-)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I think a lot of the dresses today look like negligees!!! LOL! Cat still can go out in the sun, right? All these covers look like they are at night. Plus, I didn't know if the other characters were vamps or not.

Which brings me to ask a question, CaroB. What do you think of authors "bending the rules" with regards to vampires going out during the day in so many books now-a-days?

message 13: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments That's actually a really good question! I've asked myself the same thing before (as you do when you're thinking about the believability of the book you're reading), and have come to the conclusion that *IF* vampires were to actually exist, then being unable to go out during the day would be too limiting and too dangerous, and they would've been discovered and killed out centuries ago. I think "bending the rules" is fine, as long as it's done in a manner which doesn't distract me from the story but rather ends up enriching it. One of my biggest gripes with the Twilight series was that when I think of human-like entities that don't die, don't drink human blood (vegetarian equivalent), sparkle in the sun and are drop-dead gorgeous, I think fairies, not vampires, and the incongruity of that kept distracting me. I know I'm not in the majority with that though :-)
What do you think?

message 14: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (last edited Sep 02, 2011 02:07AM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I am not a big vamp reader, but I do indulge. I liked the first Twilight, but not the rest in the series. The whole sparkle thing seemed to crack open an acceptance to "bend the rules". So now it is like I have to remember which author am I reading now and what are the rules? That said, I guess I would say I used to be more of a purest - but now I'm okay, it is kind of a **deep sigh** moment now, then I move on.

Lina | 5563 comments I can relate to that too. I never would have called myself a big paranormal reader, but this year has kinda changed that. A friend said for her it's a great escape in a way that contemporaries aren't, simply because it's so removed from what she knows, her everyday life. I used to think of historicals the same way, with the added bonus that many historicals are so well researched, you end up finding out some interesting facts you wouldn't otherwise have known... her take on that was that PNRs can be more of an escape because they're not subjected to the same scrutiny. It made me look at PNRs in a new way. I do love my contemp romances though, it just seems so hard to find a "normal" one recently :-)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments I read two that fit, but they were both in July, lol!
As for the vamps... I dunno. I kinda like 'em being sexy, but I'm not sure I like how they've gone from being ugly, horrible monsters to sparkling sex-gods who have sweet souls or whatever. Haven't read Twilight, but I probably will get to it one of these days, just to see what all the hype/rage is about, since my step-mom loaned me her set. I did watch the first Twilight movie, but Kristen(sp?) Stewart just kind of detracted from my enjoyment. She's so freakin' monotone, and the way the whole movie was just them talking monotone and making googoo eyes at each other kind of bored me. To say it nicely, she's not my favorite actress, not even in the top 50. I haven't read really any PNRs either, though I do read the Sookie Stackhouse books, and love 'em, especially with the True Blood actors as visuals for me to imagine... yum! But, being a fan of horror, I still kind of think that vamps should be scary, and not uber-beautiful sex gods who think it's wrong to drink blood and can walk out in sunshine like any old human. If they're not gonna drink blood, and can still go out in daytime, then they might as well just be immortal humans, and not get the vampire label. Hard to figure out though really what I think, b/c I do like the idea of a hot sexy vampire wanting to be my boyfriend, but only if he makes me a vamp too, lol. But there's gotta be a danger element to it somehow. Huh. We were just having a huge discussion about this very question in a horror group I'm in, and over there, there's a ton of Twilight/PNR/Sookie bashing. I guess it just boils down to different strokes for different folks.

LMAO! There is a whole lot of truth in that statement; if they bend the rules too much, what is the point? That they have restraint?

Kit, I completely hear you on this. I had so many people recommend that when I saw it, I remember thinking "huh? that was supposed to be romantic?" it just seemed so awkward.
