Actually, that would be a "flock" AFAIK; but *shrug* it could be a peck, also ... that's something I don't know OtTomH ...

And my acronyms for those who don't know:
AFAIK - As Far As I Know
OtTomH - Off the Top of my Head

Phil Cantrill | 313 comments Speaking of collective nouns, everyone knows a flock of geese is a gaggle, right?

But how many know a skein of geese is a migrating flock, in flight?

y'know, I have gone through cycles with chickens. when I was a wee bit, I really liked them; as I got older, I thought they were annoying, but now that I"m REALLY old, I think they're sort of cool - especially the fancy ones. My mom used to have an odd assortment that she got from a friend's family and they laid eggs in all different colours - not just brown and white, but also a sort of pale pink, green and blue. Very neat.

Yup ... growing up on a ranch you see all kinds of things, including watching a chicken actually lay an egg. Now THAT looks PAINFUL!

Aren't beetles bugs?

And this whole conversation sounds like the kind of lunacy we'd talk about in The Village of Wundee (A Nice Place To Live(tm)), which is a group of people, many of whom I've known since 1993, that have stuck together ever since meeting on the old newsgroup Alt.1d (wundee, get it?) and eventually formed a mailing list. It's a zany group - y'all remind me of them. :-)

message 67: by TC (new)

TC | 55 comments Ooh, just seen this thread, very cool.

An appropriate collective noun for this site, a kindle of kittens.

We were talking about cochineal only yesterday, have seen the beetles/bugs it comes from while we've been abroad. The topic came up because little one was at a party yesterday, given a marshmallow snack thing and one of the ingredients is cochineal - yuck!

Random fact of the day - Creative Reviews is up to 814 members!! WOOT!

OK - I may be the only person that excited about it.

Other random fact of the day?

Big foot has been spotted on every continent on earth except for Antarctica!

message 73: by TC (new)

TC | 55 comments Maybe the penguins just aren't telling...

The only ad I see is for the RSPB.

message 74: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Cambria, they might have cookies that trace what you've been looking at and put the ads up accordingly.

And you have to watch out for those penguins. They are SNEAKY! Apart from when they watch planes go overhead and don't stop watching and just fall over backwards. That's NEVER not going to make me laugh...

I bet it's on Youtube somewhere, if anyone has access thereto.

My 2nd husband was obsessed with going to Antarctica - I never understood it. I'm not sure if he still wants to - after I left him he did all sorts of things I was always discouraging him from, like buying a house, signing up to be a cop and then buying a boat. Interestingly enough, despite the fact that he was always complaining that I spent too much money, he recently had to declare bankruptcy ... (Yeah, we're still friends - always were better friends than anything else).

message 78: by Mysti (new)

Mysti Parker | 216 comments I can attest to that, Splitter. My hubby reads all the time, but it's always about things he wants to learn more about that interest him at the time. Like nowadays, it's all things garage, since we've just built a new one. He considers fiction rather pointless :)

Fortunately, my husband likes to read, and he likes to read a pretty good variety of stuff - sci fi, space opera, fantasy and, of course, military history. What is it with men and their fascination with the military? Anyway, he's actually introduced me to some pretty good books over the years.

Dale Ibitz (goodreadscomdale_ibitz) | 298 comments Haven't seen Despicable Me, though it looks entertaining. I think it's out on cable now, so will check it out.

I used "gaggle of geese" in a picture book years ago. Love the sound of that.

And chickens? Yeah, we used to have them until the raccoons, owls and fox got 'em. We had 4, and we each named one: Nugget, Parmesan, Soup, and of course my daughter broke the trend and named hers Princess. The funny thing is we thought we had all hens...until the monrning when a rooster was crowing like mad in the hen house...my first thought was that one of our neighbors' roosters got in our hen house! The cad! Until I realized the crowing came from Princess...
