Hello my name is.......(Introductions)

Yes, Jude, there are several ways and cost free! You just have to be able to do some of the legwork yourself and well, I have yet to meet a self published author who doesn't promote their own work. Even with my print published copy of my book, I still had to do all the promotion work, unless I wanted to pay for some outrageous package.
Nicholas.
BTW, Jude, thanks for adding my latest title to your "to read" shelf. It is greatly appreciated.

* NO SELF-PROMOTION HERE"
I am published by Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing, but Editio invited me and these days authors published by smaller presses need to do a lot of the same things self-published authors do for promotion in any case. Certainly writing, for me, is a passion not the day job. I've wondered about self-publishing from time to time. If I was starting now I might have gone that route.
Kendal wrote: "Oops. My apologies."
No apologies Kendal, I just thought it would also be good in that thread, so everyone saw it.

It is available on Amazon, Nook, iBooks, and Smashwords. I look forward to having a wonderful time in this goup :)

Although I live in Brooklyn, my background is in the horse business, so my writing focuses on the ins and outs of the horse show and horse racing industries.
I'm not one hundred percent convinced that self-publishing is the best vehicle for my books, but I'd like to take it as far as I can! Looking forward to discussing it more with others. I did really enjoy learning the formatting process, so I'm considering offering that as a service.

I'm J.P. Hansen. I have one literary novel out from a small press and some poetry. I am looking forward to self-publishing a series of mysteries soon. I hope to learn stuff about how to self-publish and promote ebooks.

Anyway I am in IT for my work so I hope to be able to help folks out by identifying open source programs for graphics, free web hosting sites, and anything that my limited experience will bring to the discussion.

I'm Tim Taylor. There are a lot of other authors who got there first with that name, so I call myslef Tim C. Taylor, even though that sounds like a girl's name if you say it quickly.
I've been published in small press magazines and anthologies, have an agent and interest from trad publishers, but none of that translated into a novel sale.
So when I lost my job in February, I started a gap year to concentrate on my writing and enjoying my family. A few weeks in I started self-publishing and then publishing other authors too. I'm only just about to start publishing novels and I'm interested in learning more about marketing.
I used to write software. So now I do some building of ebooks for other publishers because the coding work is familiar.

I've published one novel through a small press called Calderwood Books. When I was ready to publish the second book, I decided to self-publish through Smashwords and the Kindle Store because Calderwood wasn't yet able to get their books into the Kindle Store. Happily, they have recently fixed the problem. :) Anyway, I'm probably most interested in marketing tips. I've been ramping up my social marketing, but so far it hasn't generated much in the way of sales.

Thanks for the invite Edtio, it's nice to be here.
I recently self-published my first novel, Cardsharp. It's a children's adventure book set in the art-smuggling underworld. I've sold a few copies, and had some great reviews, but I can't seem to build momentum. Has anyone got any tips for pushing a book on Facebook?

Do you have a fanpage? I have to admit, I've found just posting about my book (which isn't actually on sale yet) tends to generate quite a lot of interest from my friends-before-I-was-a-writer, but I've been on Facebook for years, so I've got quite a lot of those! It's probably harder to build it up if you're starting an FB page with a definite view to selling books, although I don't know if that's your case or not.
Worth a try, though, eh? :)

My name is Emma and I have been writing forever but only been published since May this year (2011) - when I finally gave up on submitting to agents and publishers and did it myself - but only as e-books at present.
I have a short story and a romance novel out in a variety of digital formats (Kindle, Smashwords Premium Catalogue which includes Nook, Kobo, ePub, PDF, RTF).
That was the easy bit.
Getting the books to sell is altogether a far more complicated affair. I am trying to build my 'author platform', as advised by various online gurus (so have set up Blogs, websites, Twitter and Facebook and of course Goodreads!). But sales are still very slow - particularly in the UK.
I am looking to share experiences with other authors. The invitation to join this group on goodreads came at the perfect moment. I am a social media virgin and digital publishing newbie but I really looking forward to meeting fellow writers and helping where I can and learning from those who are ahead of where I sit on the curve.
These are exciting times and this group on Goodreads looks as though it will be a very helpful resource.

Thanks a lot : ) I also write fictional short stories (currently have one titled Baccarat for Kindle), and have temporarily stopped working on one for the moment until I wrap up the publishing process with my upcoming poetry book.

I have just recently published my first book about living/travelling in Australia for a year. I am currently writing my second book about doing the same in Canada. After completing this book I hope to start writing fiction.

Thank you for the invitation to join the group! I'm Kristy K. James. I've always lived in Michigan and am currently enjoying the early arrival of autumn. I've written several books over the past several years and have self-published three of them so far. I've generally stayed within the romance genre, but have begun branching out with non-fiction, fact-based fiction, and will be beginning a couple of YA series sometime in the next few months.
We're going to hope I can find my way back here because, at the moment, I'm a little GoodReads challenged. But I'm learning my way around the site, slowly but surely. I just need to find a few hours of my own to invest in it.
Hello to everyone else. Pamela, I'm heading over to read your article in just a minute. Belinda, I can do you a few better on the pets. I'm a sucker for a 'Mom, please?' and so we live in a zoo (my opinion). But that's okay. I'm very fond of all of them. And more grateful than I can say for self-scooping litter boxes.
Sandra, I would LOVE to have someone review my books. If you're interested, I'll provide coupon codes so you can get them at no charge.
Nice to meet you all. If you'd like, you can find out about my blog and books at: http://kristykjames.com/

Hello! My name is Michelle Cullum and I live in San Diego, CA. I just finished my first self-published book. I am trying to keep up with everything that I am learning daily about self-publsihing. I feel like a true Newbie so any and all help is much appreciated.

My name is Linda Bond and I live in the UK. I have 4 children's books published, all adventure stories about Retishella mermaid and her world.
I have a fan page on facebook and a website www.freewebs.com/lindabond.
I think it is important these days for us authors to get together and support each other. The traditional publishing route seems to be open to very few.

Thank you so much Tim for the small laugh this morning. Just so you know though, I would never have made the Timcie connection if you hadn't suggested it. On the plus side, I am never going to forgot Tim C. Taylor now. Thank you again.

Hope everyone has a fabulous day!

Go to the main page for the group and you'll see "edit membership" under the group image. You should be able to change it there.

I have the first book in a series, Wizard and Spy published as an ebook on Amazon and Smashwords. I received the proof for CreateSpace but that was weeks ago. The cover needs to be re-done and I haven't had time to do it.
Wizard and Spy: Book 1 The Ex-Apprentices
I'm in the process of editing the second book for publication. My biggest problem is finding TIME to do the shameless self-promotion seemingly required of self-published authors, write and do my "day job", too.

This looks like a great group for questions, answers and support. Thanks for the invitation.

Christine - What do you think of Createspace? I've published my books only as ebooks so far on Smashwords and Amazon but I'd like to see them in paper if it's not too expensive or difficult.

It doesn't really cost you anything except the ISBN, which Createspace can provide for free if you want, and the cost of proof copies. Since it's print on demand, when books are ordered from Amazon, or someplace, Createspace prints them and sends you the royalties. So far, so good.

Absolutely there is--lots of ways! For Kindle, the best way to go is through Kindle Direct Publishing. They even have a book about it: Publish on Amazon Kindle with Kindle Direct Publishing. To publish on the Barnes & Noble Nook, you go through PubIt. And then there's Smashwords, which is an independent website where people can buy your book in tons of formats, and it also sends your book to smaller markets so people can buy them there--Kobo, iBooks (for iPad), and others. (They also give you the option to send your book to PubIt but I think you get higher royalties if you do it yourself.) They have a book too: Smashwords Style Guide.
