I'm a crochet girl...I'm a terrible knitter. That being said, I'm creating some cute items from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller. (Fingerless gloves, little purses, a shrug or two.) I've also come across Blueprint Crochet. This book has some lovely patterns in it too. (Light, lacy, and uber-feminine!)
I'm having a hard time finding other crochet patterns that aren't terrible. Maybe I should say, I'm having a hard time find patterns that are more up-to-date, modern and funky, cool and, dare I say it, sexy?
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone have a solution?

Try the website www.Ravelry.com They have thousands of users and thousands of patterns in crochet and knit both. I myself am a crocheter and I love that site. I have found a lot of patterns, both pay and free that are modern or funky in nature.
I second the Ravelry suggestion, but if you're still waiting on your email invite you can look up www.crochetpatterncentral.com They have a search directory for more patterns than I know what to do with. Some are old ladyish, but there are lots of awesome ones as well.
One of the neatest patterns I've ever seen is the Sushi Roll scarf by Mermaid Creations. You can do a google search for it if you're interested.
www.lionbrand.com also has a lot of patterns, but you'll need to do a specific search for crochet ones.
When you get to Rav, look me up- deeppurple! You'll love it, it's awesome. And there are many 'sexy' patterns listed on there as well. ;)

As for your gauge, what are your specific problems? My first problem was the foundation chain was always so much smaller than the actual work which created problems later on. Once I learned the chainless foundation stitch my whole crochet world changed. I highly recommend learning it.
I also forgot about www.crochetme.com. They're a really neat community as well. If you need any other gauge help, there are a TON of youtube tutorials on crochet to look up.

My foundation chain is usually a little too tight, so I've started using a slightly larger hook for the foundation, then switching to the smaller hook

I love ravelry.com; Great website to get patterns. Best idea I got fromt there was to crochet cloth reuseable tampons and feminie pads. Best idea ever. Also, great baby patterns to crochet. Every crocheter should know about this site! http://www.crocheted4angels.etsy.com
