Is it just me, or has anyone else realized the monumental role Petyr and Lysa has played in starting the war in the Seven Kingdoms? If Lysa hadn't POISONED her own husband and then LIED to her own sister about suspecting the Lannisters, then Ned Stark wouldn't have went to Kings Landing in the first place. If Ned hadn't been at Kings Landing and already suspicious of the Lannisters he wouldn't have cared whose son Joffrey was and he would still be alive. Also Robb and Catlynn wouldn't have been murdered. Lysa got hers in the end, but Petyr Baelish is still at large. Doesn't anyone get how HUGE this is! It puts the Lannisters original motives in a whole new perspective, and scarier yet, it makes you wonder what Petyr's true motivations are. We all thought it was to win Catlynn back but she's dead, sort of, and Petyr doesn't seem to care a bit. Any thoughts?

Wait why do you think Lysa poisoned her own husband?
She admits so in book 3. She is yelling at Littlefinger in a jelousy outburst when she says it. The line is easy to miss if you are not paying attention to every single word in a 1.000 pages book.

I remembered it well because it shocked me to find, 3000 pages later, give or take 200, the answer to the riddle that puts everything in motion, as Ashlie mentions in this thread.Just like that, when nobody is even watching. It's like one of Hitchcock's MacGuffins.
I know. Everything was kind of unraveling anyways, but it was really Lysa's foolishness that set it all off.
Agreed. Lysa is a powerful character as much as I dislike her. Her actions alone caused so much unrest! Slightly off topic, but will it be mentioned later what happened to the child that Petyr and Lysa made when they were still in Riverrun? O.o (I'm reading A Feast for Crows now)
Lysa did the deed, but I think Littlefinger planned the whole thing. It’s all too intricate and devious for Lysa to have thought of it by herself. Let us not forget: Jon Arryn was getting wise to the true parentage of Cersei’s brood… THAT’S what really started things off. I think Petyr got wind of Jon’s suspicions and decided to act, so he could get on Cersei’s good side, knowing that the Lannisters would be powerful allies and Tywin (as Hand to Joffrey) would be a much better ruler than Robert ever was. Because if the truth got out, Cersei and Jaime would have been executed for traitors and House Lannister would have taken a giant dump. But with Arryn dead and the truth ‘under control’ between Cersei/Jaime and Petyr, all they would have to do is get King Robert out of the way before he began to suspect anything, and Petyr would be sitting pretty suckling on the Lannister teat. (And of course his knowledge of the truth would be his insurance policy against them getting HIM out of the way.)But then, after Jon Arryn died, King Robert had to go and screw everything up by calling good ol’ Ned Stark to be his Hand instead of making a sensible choice like Tywin… I think it was only then that Petyr decided to have Lysa accuse the Lannisters, not only as a distraction from the truth, but also pitting the two Houses against each other with the assumption (correct in this case) that the Starks would lose playing against the Lannisters.

I think Lysa was only an instrument. She played her part well but someone had to kill Jon Arryn. The war was inevitable. Petyr, on the other hand, is a cunning and dengerous man and I think his role IS monumental.
I think with all the characters running around in the story, Littlefinger is the one to look out for. As mentioned, he started all this chaos in the Seven Kingdoms and I think GRRM's got a bigger role for him than we all think. I wonder what would happen if HE wins. Also kinda scared for Sansa since he's so obsessive about Cat.
Littlefinger is one of my favorite characters and certainly one of the most interesting to read about. Personally, I think his life as an underdog, looked down upon by the high circles of Westerosi nobility since adolescence, is an excellent "excuse" of sorts for the ruthless tactics he's adopted to get what he wants. I sure hope he doesn't die soon.Also, the fact that he hasn't had a POV chapter so far (and, according to GRRM, isn't going to) points towards his having even larger plans that need to be kept secret for now. Maybe he's been constructed to be the great villain of the series - if you believe, as I do not, that ASOIAF has villains per se.
Indeed. Finding out what really happened made me reconsider each main character and their motivations.After the events in Book 1, it was clear that Petyr Baelish was dangerous, but I never would have thought him to be this manipulative.
what do you guys think would happen if littlefinger encountered the NEW cat?
I suppose we would see his most honest reaction yet. 99% of what he says and does is a lie. The only real thing we know about is his love for Catelyn, I think.Meeting Lady Stoneheart would shake him deeply.
I guess he would freak out, then attempt to use Lay Stoneheart for his own gains. I honestly think, if he can control her, he would lose her.
I feel like their story line was kind of thrown together at the last minute. As if he was trying to tie loose ends together really quick.
