Faith McKay (faithmckay) | 5 comments Oh hey, I just got the first MI book and was wondering if there was an order! I skipped most of the rest of this thread because, you know, spoilers, but I wanted to say thanks!

I'm excited to start these. A lot of people I know love it, and I'm seeing it everywhere now with the movie coming out.

message 102: by Gwennie (last edited Nov 29, 2012 11:22AM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Sure is! The best way to read them is like this....

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3) by Cassandra Clare City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments, #6) by Cassandra Clare

The Clockwork books (Infernal Devices) is a spinoff series that's historical, but there are crossover characters. Also, the last two listed are not out yet.

Yeah that's where they do differ for me too. Obviously Molly and Arthur have no doubts in their minds about each other. I just see Charlotte as the mother figure, like Molly, and I guess the muggle stuff compared to inventions (and the red hair haha) attach Henry to Arthur for me. (Not sure if that made sense haha.)

Its funny I never really thought about the Simon/Harry thing. Maybe because they are so different? Though in Simon's defense he's not the same kid he was in book 1.

And now that I think of it, I see similarities between Voldemort and Valentine too. (That's his name right? God I'm horrible.)

message 104: by Maree (new)

Maree | 249 comments Yeah, that's his name, lol. Really though, I think it's a horrible name for a bad guy. Too many fat babies with wings attached to the name for me. Voldemort was fresh, something Rowling could attach her own meaning to.

I didn't directly connect with Molly and Arthur either, but now that you mention it, I totally see it. And I wish I'd asked you before I began reading, Wendy!

message 105: by Katy (new)

Katy | 478 comments I didnt read the books in the right order, if it helps. I wasnt lost or anything, but now I know I would have understood some references better.

And I agree. Valentine? Haha. Vol de mort in french means "flight of death" which I always found fun because I love studying French :)

message 106: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Yeah, perhaps Valentine was supposed to be an oxymoron, you know? LOL, Voldemort is definitely better.

Maree, LOL, I still read the books. I'm actually reading City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare right now! It's my next challenge book. :)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Oh, Stacia dang, lmao.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Really? I remember saying that was one of my only issues with that book, that there was too much (view spoiler)

message 111: by Maree (new)

Maree | 249 comments Oh Katy, that´s really cool! I think J.K. does put a lot into her names as well as the little touches in her plot. I think those things are what make them the best.

message 112: by Katy (new)

Katy | 478 comments I can never express how much I love HP <3

I plan on reading City of Lost Souls this month :)

HOW DID I NOT REMEMBER THAT? lol, that was kinda weird.

message 114: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Very weird. It didn't seem to fit with the prior vibe of the story.

I constantly forget story details. It's one of the negatives of reading too much. Things start to blend together.

message 115: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I saw this on Cassie's tumblr and now I'm having one of those moments where I need CP2 right now because I HAVE to know"

'“Which are you more nervous about City of Heavenly Fire or Clockwork Princess?
— oneofthenightchildren”
— In terms of “when they come out, how will people react?” I guess Clockwork Princess, because the ending gave my critique group a lot of “AAAAA!” (although everyone agreed it was the only way it could end, but I still rewrote it about 1,000 times) whereas CoHF isn’t finished. So without myself knowing exactly how the ending plays out, even if I do know what happens, I can’t guess how people might react. Mostly people react to the execution of something rather than the idea.'

message 116: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I agree that the execution counts for so much. There is a book that's out right now which has gotten a lot of reaction to a character death - not because the character died, but because of how it happened and how the reader's feelings were manipulated because of the setup.

message 117: by Laraine (new)

Laraine (lala26) | 46 comments I saw a copy of the manga for Clockwork Angel Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices Manga, #1) by Cassandra Clare at our local bookstore. I didn't even know they released one!

message 118: by Kami (new)

Kami (kamijo101) | 18 comments I own City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare but have yet to read it. i just can't bring myself to start it, its been forever since i read the other ones. so i almost need a recap cuz it would take me forever to read them all again.

message 119: by Maree (new)

Maree | 249 comments Yeah, I did that too. I was confused at the beginning for sure. It wasn't well recapped in the book itself.

message 120: by Kami (new)

Kami (kamijo101) | 18 comments Usually i don't like when they recap because i just read it but when its been a long time like this its nice to have a recap.

message 121: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I don't like recaps, but I do like it when the author drops little hints of shit that went down in previous books through dialogue or flashbacks or something that works within the story.

There's always Wikipedia if you don't want to reread.

message 122: by Kami (new)

Kami (kamijo101) | 18 comments Great idea thanks

message 123: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 38 comments A friend of mine recommended the Mortal Instruments series and I love it! The first three books were awesome and I am currently reading the 4th book. I plan to read all 5 books first before moving on to The Infernal Devices series. Is there a lot of crossover between the series? Also I can't wait til the City of Bones movie comes out, but I'm a little disappointed with who they casted for Jace. Jace's waay hotter in my head lol

message 124: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (last edited Feb 07, 2013 10:59PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Yes and no. There is a connection between a few of the past and present characters, but it's not in the main part of the story.

We normally recommend reading ID book 1 after the first 3 MI books, then reading the next MI, then ID and so on because that's the publish order and the way that the author wrote the criss-crossing hints. But you don't have to do it that way and won't be lost if you read one series over another first.

I wasn't a big fan of the Jace casting either looks-wise but I do like Jamie Campbell Bower's attitude about the role. He seems like he's really into playing the character, which is always nice to see.

message 125: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 38 comments Ok thanks Stacia, maybe I'll try reading the first ID before I start the fifth book.

Glad he's really into the role and I can't wait to see how he brings Jace's character to the screen.

message 126: by S.P. (new)

S.P. Cervantes (spcervantes) | 1 comments I just started book 2 of MI so I will pause and read the first ID book. Great advice;)

message 127: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Well, you should read the first 3 of MI before you read the first ID.

So the order is actually like this:

But that's only if you want to read then in the order that they were published, so you catch those cross-over's as they were intended, lol.

That's how I read them, and it made the cross over's more exciting, i think.

Katy | 478 comments Clockwork Princess book trailer

http://youtu.be/qyw0FqR-bjc

The sound on my computer isnt working so I cant hear it O.O What does Tessa say at the end?

message 129: by Maree (new)

Maree | 249 comments You probably want to hear the whole thing - there's a voiceover. She kind of does a summary, then says that she would sacrifice the world to save the people she loves.

message 130: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 38 comments So glad I read it in the order you all suggested. Love both series and can't wait for Clockwork Princess next month.

message 131: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Grooms (muse1009) | 100 comments I just read City of Bones... I wanted to read at least the first book before the movie came out, but now I'm hooked on the series. I immediately started City of Ashes and will probably have devoured everything before too long. I am stoked to see the movie (seeing the trailer at another movie is what really made me want to start reading), and I think the casting is interesting. Lily Collins is a little prettier than I see Clary in my mind, but I don't mind the choice. I've seen Jamie Campbell Bower in a few things-- nothing exciting, so I hope he does a good job. I love Lena Headey as Jocelyn-- she's awesome, but she won't be around too much. I am also interested to see Luke and Simon... I liked both of those characters in the book a lot too. Really, there was almost nothing I didn't like in this book!

message 132: by Savannah (new)

Savannah (skyswriting) | 40 comments I like the series, it's awesome for a YA/PN. There is one little thing that bugged me, it really let me down, because I was so in for the Jace/Clary romance, until I found out (view spoiler) it was so disturbing how they still (view spoiler) lol. Oh well, I am going on book 3 soon, I hope it turns out later that they are indeed, not. (view spoiler)

message 133: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Grooms (muse1009) | 100 comments I agree Sky... The chemistry between Clary and Jace is really great, so I'm keeping hope alive something will change. It was definitely a bit of a disturbing twist, but I appreciated the way it ramped up the drama. Even if it did put a knot in my stomach.

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I'm on like chapter 5. :| I want to read it but I have so much stuff to do today! It's killing me.

message 136: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm only about chapter 5 too, but not because I don't want to just sit and devour it. I've just had little time to read.

aaahhh I cant even find it anywhere!!!!!!!

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments Books of Wonder is holding mine hostage. That is the only conclusion I can draw since my order status STILL reads IN PROCESS. They are EVIL.

I NEED TO KNOW THE GOODS!

message 139: by Anna (new)

Anna | 19 comments I read the first 3 Mortal Intruments and really loved them. I hought it was an awesome teen UF series. Then I read Clockwork Angel and was disappointed. It just felt like a historical re-enactment of the original series - so I stopped there not wanting to spoil a lovely reading memory!
Definately looking forward to what the cinema version will bring. Some of the trailers look fun!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I'm about 75 pages from finishing. It's been a rough reading week.

You're welcome to discuss now, just mark any big spoilers.

message 142: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I'm finished. I think I could've done without the epilogue, or with a less definite epilogue. I enjoyed, in spite of myself, the parts where she was remembering things from her life with (view spoiler). But the whole thing at the very end came across as sort of indulgent and too (view spoiler).

But the epilogue does make me wonder about the events in the final TMI book - if something happens in that book to bring about the circumstance at the very end of the epilogue for CP2. Like (view spoiler) I think if that is the case then I'll be a little more forgiving of that whole situation being written into the epilogue (though I'd still have probably preferred it to come up in TMI#6 rather than in the epilogue of CP2). If that's not the case...I dunno. I'm conflicted. I just would have preferred subtle to absolute here, I think.

that epilogue! i actually loved it especially (view spoiler)! but yup, it's been said more than once that clare sort of (view spoiler)

message 145: by N.B. (new)

N.B. Dixon I finished Clockwork Princess yesterday. I never thought I'd love a series more than Mortal Instruments, or a hero more than Jace, but Infernal Devices and in particular, Will Herondale, stole the crown. One thing though, did anyone else feel the epilogue made things a bit too convenient? For me, it seemed unnecessary and I wish it hadn't been added. The book was nicely tied up without it. It turned what should have been a perfect book into a very nearly perfect book. At least I thought so.

message 146: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 38 comments I agree! I could've done without the epilogue too. That's what I needed to talk about the most and it was a perfect book til that. (view spoiler)

Regarding TMI, I'm curious also about (view spoiler) My favorite crossover was (view spoiler). I thought that was lovely.

message 147: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 38 comments And I thought (view spoiler)?

I had to do a game of thrones marathon last night to get over that epilogue lol.

message 148: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments lmao

message 149: by N.B. (new)

N.B. Dixon I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought it was obvious all along whom Tessa was meant to be with, and though I thought both boys were equally deserving, it felt to me as though the Author just couldn't stand to have one boy not get his girl and this was the best way she could come up with to fix it.
